New Orleans Saints predicted to make shocking QB decision on Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler
After years of inexplicable cap mismanagement and a failure to pick an organizational direction, the New Orleans Saints have sunk to football purgatory. With no apparent desire to be competitive in the upcoming season, the ongoing and nationally forgotten quarterback battle becomes even more puzzling. It's a three-way race between Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and rookie Tyler Shough, with the latter two men seemingly creating a bit of separation. Advertisement It's unclear who has the defensive edge between Rattler and Shough, but one NFL writer made a bold prognosis on who he thinks might come out on top. In a recent piece, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton predicted that Rattler will beat out Shough for the QB1 job this summer in training camp. "Even though Shough spent six years in college, he may need time to grasp the speed of the pro game," Moton wrote. "Rattler was the primary backup over Haener last season. He'll stay ahead of him on the depth chart and beat out Shough for a second chance to showcase his talent in a starting role." Moton acknowledged Rattler's underwhelming performance as a starter last season but proclaimed he has the potential to excel as a pro based on what evidence, I'm not sure. Advertisement Rattler has always had the physical traits but had an underwhelming collegiate career, and even with the natural arm talent, he struggles to read defenses and work the pocket. Shough is 25. He should be able to be ready to compete out of the gate. If he can't, then tossing Rattler or Haener in to see if they are competent en route to trying to win the Arch Manning sweepstakes should be the franchise's goal.

New Orleans Saints players officially report for 2025 training camp
Football season is finally here It's finally here. New Orleans Saints players will report for their 2025 training camp on Tuesday -- 92 of them, veterans and rookies alike. That group includes second-round quarterback Tyler Shough, who recently signed his contract, and second-year kicker Charlie Smyth, who outkicked a number of starters at a summer workout (and who the Saints get a roster exemption for, as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program). Teams are allowed to roster only 90 players so expect a corresponding move for the reported addition of free agent defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard. They won't be hitting the practice field just yet. NFL rules dictate that Tuesday's activities be limited to "physical examinations, meetings, classroom instruction, running, and conditioning." Look for a handful of players dealing with injuries to start training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). But fans won't have to wait long to see their team in person. Wednesday's practice session at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center is open to the public; while tickets are required, they are free and given out on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find more information on the 11 open practice dates here. New Orleans will kick off their preseason series on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Aug. 10 before returning home for their second exhibition game, this time with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Aug. 17 . They'll close out the preseason with Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Aug. 23 (just in time for Amtrak's new Mardi Gras Service for fans in the Gulf South). Two of those games will be broadcast nationally on NFL Network. This year, NFL roster cuts are set for a 3 p.m. CT deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Rosters will reduce from 90 players to 53, practice squads will form, and then we're on to Week 1. Football season is here, folks. Let's get it.

New Orleans Saints give Tyler Shough historic $10.8M deal as rookie QB battle heats up
Photo by Derick E. Hingle/Getty Images The New Orleans Saints are making a bold move—and putting real money behind it. Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough has signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $10.795 million contract, ending weeks of negotiation and signaling the franchise's belief that the 26-year-old could be the answer under center. The deal, reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on July 18, is more than just a payday—it's a statement. Not only is Shough the last player in the 2025 NFL Draft to land a fully guaranteed contract, but his deal includes an annual roster bonus structure no other non-first-round pick received. With training camp looming and no clear veteran leader in sight, the Saints have thrown the door wide open for a quarterback competition—and Shough might just walk through it as QB1. Tyler Shough's rise from injury setbacks to QB1 contender gives the New Orleans Saints a bold new hope under center When the New Orleans Saints selected Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick in this year's NFL Draft, expectations were modest. But the terms of his deal say otherwise. The fully guaranteed structure, coupled with an annual roster bonus that frontloads his earnings before camp, is a rarity outside the first round. That wrinkle reportedly held up the signing—until this week. Now, with the paperwork done, the focus shifts to the field. Shough enters camp as part of a three-man battle for the starting job alongside fellow rookies Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Between them, they have zero NFL wins and only seven combined career starts. 'There won't be a holdout distraction now. It's about football,' one Saints official told WWW Sports after the deal was signed. The Saints' recent history at quarterback has been rocky. Since Drew Brees' retirement, attempts to stabilize the position with Derek Carr, Jameis Winston, and Andy Dalton have fallen short. This year's trio represents a fresh start—but also a major risk. And yet, Shough's journey suggests he's up for it. He began at Oregon, backing up Justin Herbert, before transferring to Texas Tech and then Louisville. Injuries—including a broken collarbone and fibula—derailed multiple seasons, but in 2024 he delivered his strongest campaign yet: 3,195 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and a marquee road win over Clemson. 'He's been through every possible challenge,' a Louisville assistant told WWW Sports. 'That experience—that toughness—is what makes him different.' His performance earned him College Sports Communicators Comeback Player of the Year honors and an invite to the 2025 Senior Bowl. Shough opted out of the Sun Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft, betting on himself one last time. The Saints, it seems, are now doing the same. The New Orleans Saints are all-in on Tyler Shough to end their quarterback chaos Tyler Shough's journey to the NFL has been anything but ordinary—and neither is the contract he just signed. With $10.795 million fully guaranteed and a path to start in New Orleans, Shough stands at the center of one of the league's most intriguing QB battles. If he wins the job, this deal won't just be historic on paper—it'll mark the beginning of a new era for the Saints. How a new money battle emerged in the NFL; plus Scottie chases history
The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! This newsletter is fully guaranteed. Our free and excellent NFL newsletter, Scoop City, published an edition this week that left me thinking about several recent pieces of news. You can judge how related they are: What was all this fuss about, then? Agents and the NFLPA want to set a new standard that second-rounders get guaranteed contracts. That's how first-rounders reached that point, after all. (It's not CBA-mandated that every first-round pick gets 100 percent of his deal guaranteed.) But most teams have held firm. Sometimes it made sense. The Browns are one of the teams that did guarantee a second-rounder's deal, but they haven't done so for No. 36 pick Quinshon Judkins, who was recently arrested on a domestic violence charge. Yet sometimes, the second-rounder has serious leverage. No. 40 pick Tyler Shough is probably the Saints' starting quarterback in a post-Derek Carr world. Or he would be, if the Saints sign him. How long is New Orleans going to play chicken with a rookie QB who needs camp reps? (Shough could sign at any moment. Yet it's unprecedented that he hasn't.) Advertisement Which begs the question of where this is all heading, long term. I asked Scoop City author Jacob Robinson how he thinks this league-wide situation will resolve. 'Nothing materially changes' until the league's collective bargaining agreement expires in 2030, he tells me. But there's more to watch between now and then, and I'll turn it over to Jacob here: Thanks to Jacob. Soon enough, there will be ink on these deals, but what happens over the next few years is a live ball. More second rounders signing their contracts is big for Saints QB Tyler Shough
It took a while, but the last remaining 2025 rookie draft picks are starting to sign their contracts. On Wednesday evening, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the San Francisco 49ers reached an agreement with Alfred Collins, the No. 43 pick, on his standard four-year deal. Because draft slots and rookie contracts are tied together under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, the only thing left to haggle over was guaranteed money. In the end Collins was guaranteed about 88% of his $10.3 million total. That's a big deal for Tyler Shough and the New Orleans Saints. As the No. 40 pick, Shough's agent now has a baseline for the guarantees in his own contract, of at least 88%. The rookies at the top of the round received fully guaranteed deals, so Shough will likely have more than 90% of his contract guaranteed at signing. Last year's 40th overall pick, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean, was guaranteed 80.5% of his contract when he signed it. A year earlier, the Saints guaranteed 77.1% of their deal with Isaiah Foskey, the 40th pick in 2023. And more second rounders are getting across the finish line by the hour. He was picked later in the round, but Chicago Bears defensive tackle Shemar Turner reached an agreement with his team, too, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The more of these Round 2 picks get on the board, the more likely it is that Shough and the Saints will cut a deal of their own before training camp starts on July 22. Avoiding a messy holdout (or even the threat of one) and insuring the rookie quarterback gets every opportunity he can to develop his game is best for all involved.
