Lake Jacksonville, Lake Tyler temporarily closes due to heavy rainfall

TYLER, Texas (KETK)– Lake Jacksonville, Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East announced Thursday morning that they have all temporarily closed due to heavy rainfall and high water levels. According to the City of Jacksonville, the lake is currently closed to the public until further notice because of high water levels to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. 'Please be advised that high water levels may be present on some area roadways,' the city said. 'Motorists are urged to exercise caution and avoid driving through standing or moving water.' Thursday Morning Forecast: Another round of storms The City of Tyler said Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East has temporarily closed all public boat ramps because of boating hazards resulting from debris washed into the lakes by the recent rains and to reduce damage from the shoreline erosion caused by boat wakes. City officials explained that the ramps will be closed until further notice and Tyler Water Utilities anticipates reopening the ramps once lake levels lowers. Tyler Water Utilities to begin testing water for taste, odor study

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Tyler Water Utilities will test different methods that will help remove a compound in water that makes it have a distinct taste and smell. Geosmin is a problematic taste and odor compound found in water sources. TWU has plans to filter the water and will have several methods for removing the geosmin using an enclosure that provides house filter columns. Tyler Water Utilities upgrading Lake Palestine water treatment plant TWU's Taste and Odor Study is in the second phase of testing. This phase includes executing the testing plan, analyzing test results and developing recommendations for removing taste and odor compounds. It will also help find potential improvements to the overall water treatment process. Lake Tyler, Lake Tyler East and Lake Palestine provide the city its drinking water. TWU has two water treatment plants, the Golden Road Water Treatment Plant and the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Lake Palestine Water plant gets its water from Lake Palestine and has high levels of geosmin which is caused by the age of the lake and the natural organic matter found in its' body. Ninety five percent of the geosmin can be removed by the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Geosmin is treated year round even though the water is safe to drink and meets federal and state water quality standards. Courtesy of City of Tyler 'We're working to identify better treatment solutions now for future plant expansions and ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality water for Tyler residents,' Utilities Director Kate Dietz said. Testing is set to be completed and documented into a final report by Spring 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
