We want to put things right, vows frustrated Tzanev
GOALKEEPER Nik Tzanev says Newport County AFC are determined to put things right after a frustrating defeat at Grimsby Town when they host Salford City on Tuesday night. Tzanev saved a Grimsby penalty after Courtney Baker-Richardson's first-minute own goal and Matt Baker's stunning second-half volley looked to have sealed a battling point at Blundell Park on Saturday. But the Mariners snatched the win in the fourth minute of time added on, much to Tzanev's frustration. It was the fourth goal County have conceded in stoppage time already this season after two at Barnet and one at Crawley Town and the Exiles number one knows there can be no repeat against Salford. "It's really frustrating right at the end there when we've held on to a 1-1," said Tzanev. "We got a goal back and I thought, second half, we were the better team. And just a little lapse in concentration in the 94th minute is all that it was, but that's football for you. "We don't want that to become a theme - these late goals. We've got to rectify that and put it right on Tuesday night." (Image: Magi Haroun/Huw Evans Agency) The New Zealand international has made a big impression since arriving from Northampton Town to replace the departed Nick Townsend in the summer but he admits he'd relish a low-key 90 minutes against Salford. "Of course I'm pleased with my own personal performance but I'm disappointed that we couldn't hold on to get a draw, he said. "It's a team game first so that's the most important thing. "I'd prefer a quiet game, a 1-0 win and a clean sheet. But when I get called into action I have to make those saves to give the team every opportunity to come back into it." Tzanev also knows he will have to maintain his impressive start to keep his starting spot after fellow new signing Jordan Wright showed what he is capable of in last week's Carabao Cup defeat by Millwall. "I'm really enjoying it here," added the 28-year-old. "The group we have is really good, there's no bad eggs, no egos; we're all together. "Jordan and I push each other, and it shows in our performances - it showed in how well Jordan played on Tuesday [against Millwall]. "We'll continue pushing each other and it's a competitive environment, which is what you want." (Image: Gareth Everett) Tzanev is also delighted to be working with Exiles manager David Hughes and goalkeeping coach Lee Kendall and he cannot wait to play at Rodney Parade again two-and-a-half weeks after his league debut in the 1-1 draw with Notts County. "The big thing for me was the gaffer and what he wanted to instil and the environment he wanted to create," he said. "And also Kends - we've crossed paths for about six years now and he played a really big part in bringing me in. It was a bit of a no-brainer for me. "The Notts County game was amazing, the fans were unreal and we look forward to Tuesday and hopefully more of the same."

'No-brainer' to join Newport
Nik Tzanev says it was a "no-brainer" to join Newport County following his summer switch from Northampton Town. The 28-year-old has started each of the Exiles' three League Two fixtures so far this season having been identified as the club's replacement for Nick Townsend. And Tzanev has also revealed manager David Hughes and head of goalkeeping Lee Kendall were pivotal in his decision to make the switch to Rodney Parade. "I'm really enjoying it, it's been really nice," he told BBC Sport Wales. "The group we have is really good and there's no bad eggs and no egos. The goalkeeping department we have is top. "The big thing was the gaffer and what he wanted to instil and the environment he wanted to create. "Also Kends [head of goalkeeping Lee Kendall] because I think we've crossed paths for about six years now, so he was a big part to bring me in. Once it all got laid out it was a no-brainer." Newport suffered their first league defeat of the campaign last time out as they conceded in second half added time to lose 2-1 at Grimsby Town. Tzanev was among the away side's star performers as he saved a Jaze Kabia penalty in addition to making a string of impressive stops at Blundell Park. "It's really frustrating, right at the end, I thought second half we were the better team," Tzanev said of the loss to the Mariners. "Just a little lapse of concentration is all that it was in the 94th minute, but that's football for you. "Ultimately it's down to points. It's frustrating not coming away from there without at least a point. It's nice to have a good game, but it's a team sport so it's frustrating."

Newport recover from stoppage-time collapse to beat Barnet on penalties
Newport recovered from conceding twice in stoppage time to beat Barnet 4-2 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in their Carabao Cup preliminary round tie. County appeared to be breezing through to the first round after first-half goals from Cameron Antwi and Michael Reindorf. But Ryan Galvin pulled one back in the seventh minute of added time before Rhys Browne levelled two minutes later. The newly promoted hosts were denied a place in the first round as Joe Hugill and Kane Smith missed in the shootout before Cameron Evans scored the winner. Newport had taken the lead in the 31st minute when Barnet failed to deal with a corner and Antwi rifled a stunning strike into the top corner. Three minutes before the break, Reindorf doubled their advantage with a composed finish after a solo run. Barnet nearly responded when Zak Brunt's powerful shot was tipped over by Nikola Tzanev. The hosts dominated the second half but could not break through Newport's resolute defence, with Browne's goal-bound effort brilliantly saved by Tzanev. The Newport goalkeeper was finally beaten by Galvin's low drive before Browne's header from Idris Kanu's cross forced a shootout, where Hugill hit a post and Smith was denied by Tzanev.
