Jax Forrest's World Trials Championship match rescheduled
(WTAJ) — July 14 is the new date that Bishop McCort Jax Forrest is circling on his calendar to try and make the 2025 Senior World Championships. Forrest had his Final X match, which decides Team USA, delayed earlier this week due to a request from his opponent, Vito Arujau. Their world trials championship match will now move from New Jersey to North Dakota to be held alongside the junior nationals inside the Fargodome. Round one for the best-of-three series will begin at 4:20 p.m. (EST). Since Arujau was a senior world medalist last year, he was able to request a delay due to an injury or illness. The winner between Arujau and Forrest will represent the U.S. at 61 kilograms for the 2025 Senior World Championships in Croatia this September. Forrest has been on an unprecedented run lately as a high schooler. Last year, he made the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and qualified for the national team. In April, he defeated former NCAA champions to win the U.S. Open to qualify for Final X. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nation's best amateur boxers descend on DuBois
DuBois, Pa. (WTAJ) – DuBois was the place to be on Friday night if you wanted to catch a glimpse of the future stars of boxing. Seven amateur boxers ranked in the top ten nationally gathered for a training session between Team 412 and Team 814 at WPAL DuBois. Among the group of star boxers was U.S. Olympic Team Trials bronze medalist Trinity Burke, who began her career in Punxsutawney at WPAL Helman's Boxing Gym. 'It's pretty cool because it reminds me of where I started,' Burke said. As a teenager, Burke's interest in the sport was piqued after watching a match on television. 'It was so cool. I just went down to the gym to try it,' Burke said. Fast forward a few years, the 23-year-old has moved to the Pittsburgh region and now trains with Team 412. Despite having two national titles under her belt, Burke is still motivated to qualify for the Olympics one day. 'There is a gym two blocks from her home that she could walk to in five minutes every day. Instead, she rides a bus an hour each way to train with ours,' Team 412 head coach Jim Hoy said. 'That's how dedicated she is to our team and to our craft. Her level of commitment and dedication is remarkable and should be an example for anyone participating in sports.' Next week, Burke is heading to Colorado Springs to train in the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. She will be trying to earn a spot on USA Boxing's prestigious High Performance Team. '(It's incredible to) think that a girl that started in a small town in central Pennsylvania is going to be in Colorado Springs, working with the United States Olympic coach and their staff,' Hoy said. 'Sometimes you can forget how special that is and what a big deal it truly is.' Others practicing alongside Burke are inspired by what she's been able to accomplish in her young career. 'She made it this close. She's one step away from the Olympics,' three-time national champion Gea Fultz said. 'If she can do that, I can do that. She's paving the way for the younger ones (in the club).' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Jax Forrest, Keegan Bassett react to winning U.S. Open
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) – Bishop McCort wrestlers Keegan Bassett and Jax Forrest brought U.S. Open Championships back home to Johnstown this past weekend from Las Vegas. Despite being eligible for the U20 Division, Forrest bumped up to the senior level to face some of the best competition in the country. It was a move that was partially influenced by his future Oklahoma State head coach David Taylor. Bishop McCort's Jax Forrest cruises to U.S. Open finals 'The thing that Coach David told me was, you're not going there to compete. You know, if you're going, you're going to win,' the 61-kilogram champion said. 'I'm not (bumping up a level) to go there to try and take third, try and take fifth, try and beat one guy. You know, I'm going there to try and win the whole tournament.' Forrest's remarkable run included technical fall wins against former NCAA champions Nahshon Garrett and Seth Gross, who Forrest defeated in the finals. Both wrestlers are more than 10 years older than the Bishop McCort junior. 'If you told me this five years ago. I would've thought you're crazy like that's impossible,' Forrest said. 'There's never been high school guys that beat NCAA champs. But, you know, as soon as one person does it, it opens up the doors for others and it's like, why can't I (do that)?' After making the U.S. Olympic Team Trials as a sophomore last year, it's evident that what Forrest is doing as a high schooler is unprecedented. 'I'm still just an 18-year-old. So, it's really cool to be in this position, but it's different,' Forrest said. 'I don't really have a lot of people to try and take advice from because they haven't really been in my situation. (I'm) just figuring it out as I'm going along.' With the U.S. Open Championship, Forrest qualified for Final X, which is an event in June that will help determine Team USA for the Senior World Championships that are being held in Croatia. Meanwhile, Bassett won the 45-kilogram U17 title over Chestnut Ridge's Kooper Deputy, who Bassett frequently trains with. 'It's truly incredible,' Bassett said. 'For a world team, it's two kids that live 40 minutes apart and train together, like, it's unbelievable.' Winning the title meant a lot for Bassett after finishing fourth at this year's PIAA Championships. 'I've been putting in a lot of work. I've really been wanting that for three or four months ever since states,' Bassett said. 'I really wanted to win (the U.S. Open). I've been visualizing it for a while and just train really hard.' Bassett qualified for the U17 World Championships in Athens, Greece. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bishop McCort's Jax Forrest cruises to U.S. Open finals
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) – Jax Forrest is used to competing against older, more experienced and more accomplished wrestlers at this point in his young career. The Bishop McCort junior made the U.S. National Team with a fourth-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last spring. This spring, he cruised his way to the U.S. Open finals in the senior division. Stillwater's newest Cowboy, No. 2 wrestling recruit Jax Forrest commits to Oklahoma State Forrest could have wrestled against other kids his age but instead decided to jump up a level to face multiple Division I wrestlers and even former NCAA champions. The 61-kilogram wrestler won by technical fall in each of his first two matches, which set him up for an intriguing quarterfinals bout against former NCAA champion Nahshon Garrett. While it was intriguing on paper, Forrest manhandled the 31-year-old to win 10-0. In the semifinals, the Oklahoma State commit defeated Ohio State freshman Benjamin Davino 4-0. The win set him up for a championship match on Saturday against former NCAA champion Seth Gross. If Forrest defeats Gross, he will advance to Final X, which is a separate event that is used to determine the 2025 U.S. World Team in Zagreb, Croatia. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
