Bubba Watson among 7 LIV golfers to WD from U.S. Open qualifier
Bubba Watson was one of seven players tied to LIV Golf that opted to withdraw from a U.S. Open final qualifying site on Monday in Rockville, Md. Monday is the final day of U.S. Open qualifying, often billed as "the longest day in golf," as players at 10 sites across North America play 36 holes to compete for the final spots in the major championship field. A number of LIV Golf members signed up to play at the Woodmont Country Club qualifying site before the league plays outside Washington, D.C., later this week. Watson opted not to move forward with the qualifier, joined by Ben Campbell of New Zealand, David Puig of Spain, Matt Jones of Australia, Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Englishman Lee Westwood. Additionally, Australia's Wade Ormsby, a reserve who has appeared in two LIV events in 2025, dropped out. Not all LIV players decided to skip out, of course. Marc Leishman of Australia shot a 1-under-par 70 in his first 18 holes. Brendan Steele and India's Anirban Lahiri were in the mix after even-par 71s. However, only the top four players at the site will qualify for the major, slated for June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh. Several of LIV's most prominent players are already in the U.S. Open field. Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Spaniard Jon Rahm are invited as U.S. Open winners from the past 10 years; DeChambeau is the defending champion. Englishman Richard Bland was invited after winning the 2024 U.S. Senior Open. A pair of other recent major winners Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith are exempt as well. Sergio Garcia of Spain fell one stroke shy of a playoff at a final qualifying site last month in Dallas. Field Level Media

The words fun, unique and beautiful are music to this architect's ear
The words fun, unique and beautiful are music to this architect's ear Golf course architect Jay Blasi has one main objective for any project. 'The goal that I would have is that if a golfer comes off the golf course, I would love to hear three adjectives come out of their mouth: That was a ton of fun, that was really unique and that was really beautiful,' said Blasi, who grew up in Wisconsin and now lives in California. 'The highest compliment you can ever have is if somebody comes off the 18th green and they want to go again – let me back out there, I can't wait to go back there again.' Blasi worked for years for architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. before hanging his own shingle. His work with Jones included Chambers Bay in Washington, site of the 2015 U.S. Open, and SentryWorld in Wisconsin, site of the 2023 U.S. Senior Open. His builds as lead architect include the highly ranked Santa Ana Country Club in California. He recently renovated Lakeside Country Club in Houston, then shifted focus back to California to complete extensive renovations of Golden Gate Park's short course and the 18-hole Poppy Ridge. Blasi also works as a frequent host to Golfweek's Best raters at courses around the world. Poppy Ridge, in particular, could serve as a boost in showing Blasi's work to the world. He took a tired existing course owned by the California Golf Association and breathed new life into a spectacular site with an entirely new layout that does some 50,000 public-access rounds a year. 'When I had the opportunity to go out and see the site, I fell in love with the property and firmly believed that the property was special enough to give us the opportunity to craft a golf course that would stand up amongst the very best in California and beyond,' Blasi said of Poppy Ridge, which officially opens May 31. 'I think we did it. I'm really excited about this.' Click here to read much more about Blasi's work at Poppy Ridge and to watch a video of him discussing the project.

LIV Golf Korea: Bryson DeChambeau in solo lead, Smash GC on top after Round 2
INCHEON, South Korea – Bryson DeChambeau is the solo leader after 36 holes for a record-setting third consecutive LIV Golf tournament. The drama on Sunday now focuses on whether he will convert his latest opportunity into a victory. The Crushers GC captain shot his second consecutive bogey-free round at LIV Golf Korea presented by Coupang Play, carding a second-round 6-under 66 for a 13-under total and a four-shot lead over Cleeks GC's Richard Bland. [MORE: What is LIV Golf? Format, everything to know about the 2025 season ] It's the fifth 36-hole lead that DeChambeau has held since joining LIV Golf and is also his largest advantage. But DeChambeau has yet to capitalize on any of those leads, including the two previous LIV Golf tournaments. Last month in Miami, he led by two shots entering the final round but was overtaken by Ripper GC's Marc Leishman . Last week in Mexico City, he led by one before Joaquin Niemann rallied on Sunday. DeChambeau's two LIV Golf wins in 2023 came when having to play catch-up to start the final round. Asked what he must do Sunday at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea to close out a tournament that's clearly within his grasp, DeChambeau replied: "Just be a kid out there. Have a lot of fun. Go back to my roots. Just get it done." Smash GC would also like to get it done on Sunday for their first team win of the season. Although 18-hole co-leader Talor Gooch fell back after a 71 on Saturday, his teammates picked him up. Jason Kokrak joined Gooch in a tie for third after shooting a 67, while Graeme McDowell shot 69 and captain Brooks Koepka shot 70. [MORE: LIV Golf Korea preview: Can Brooks Koepka get his first win of the season?] The team's 11-under total moved them to 21 under for the first two rounds, six shots clear of the three teams tied for second — Torque GC, RangeGoats GC and DeChambeau's Crushers. "Along with myself, I don't think BK, Graeme or Gooch have gotten off to a very good start [to the 2025 season] at all team-wise, individual-wise, kind of collectively," Kokrak said. "So, looking to turn that around tomorrow." DeChambeau has been flawless the first two days in Korea, particularly off the tee with an impressive combination of power and accuracy. He leads the field with a 342.2-yard driving distance average and is tied for fourth in driving accuracy, hitting 25 of 28 fairways. Among his playing partners Sunday is the 52-year-old Bland, creating a unique final group that includes the reigning U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open champions. Bland can't match DeChambeau's length and knows that a four-shot deficit will be difficult to overcome. "This kind of course is tailor-made for him," Bland said of DeChambeau. "I've probably got to shoot something in double digits to get anywhere near him." Stinger GC's Dean Burmester is among those tied for third, four shots behind DeChambeau. Burmester has an ace and three other hole-outs this week but was disappointed that a late bogey cost him a chance to be in the final group. Asked what it would take to catch DeChambeau, Burmester replied: "Drive it past him, see if I can get into his head." Then he added: "Just kidding." It's now down to serious business in Korea, particularly for DeChambeau. Besides his recent LIV Golf near-misses, he also led last month's Masters with 16 holes to play before falling back. That recent string gives him plenty of motivation to hoist a trophy – or two with his team – on Sunday. "Given that we're a global team, it would be awesome to win here in Korea," DeChambeau said. "The fans are great. I think the Korean fans like the Crushers. I know they like the Iron Heads a little bit more. "Hopefully we're a close second, and hopefully we can give them some fun for tomorrow." TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. Here are the results and scores for each team after Saturday's Round 2 of LIV Golf Korea. 1. SMASH GC -21 (Kokrak 67, McDowell 69, Koepka 70, Gooch 71; Rd. 2 score: -11) T2. Airplane makes emergency landing on iconic PGA Tour, Olympic golf course
Airplane makes emergency landing on iconic PGA Tour, Olympic golf course An airplane that was scheduled to land at Santa Monica Airport near Los Angeles made an emergency landing on Riviera Country Club on Friday, and incredibly, all three passengers aboard were unharmed and the plane was in good shape. The incident occurred at approximately just before 1 p.m. near 1250 N. Capri Drive. First responders from both the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department were quickly on the scene. This isn't a rarity: Air traffic controllers often steer pilots toward golf courses during controlled crashes. For example, in 2015, Harrison Ford landed his plane on a course next to the same airport, Santa Monica. Founded in 1926 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Riviera ranks No. 4 on Golfweek's Best list of private courses in California and is No. 17 on the list of classic courses in the United States. It has previously hosted the 1995 PGA Championship, 1998 U.S. Senior Open and 2017 U.S. Amateur. It's also set to host the 2026 U.S. Women's Open and the 2031 U.S. Open as well as the men's and women's golf competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Riviera is the site of the Tour's Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods.
