Hawaii coast rattled by magnitude 4.2 earthquake

PĀHALA, Hawaii– A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island on Tuesday. Light shaking was felt all across the southern coasts of Hawaii, according to the U.s. Geological Survey. The earthquake happened at 9:37 a.m. and was centered about 20 miles deep. Hawaii is home to Kilauea, a volcano that frequently experiences seismic activity before and during an eruption, but it's unlikely the quake was related to any volcanic activity. This quake was centered offshore. There weren't any initial reports of damage. This is a developing story. Check back for updates. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: Washington, Baltimore face flood threat after Miami smashes rain record

Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. A slow-moving but potent storm system that slammed the Southeast with torrential rain and severe weather is finally inching its way toward the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, putting millions of people in cities like Washington and Baltimore at risk of flash flooding. Noaa's Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has highlighted portions of several states where there's a risk of flooding from the Southeast and Ohio Valley to the Northeast. However, the WPC placed areas of the mid-Atlantic, including Washington and Baltimore, in a Level 2 out of 4 threat of flash flooding on Tuesday. The FOX Forecast Center said that rain totals are expected to be highest in the mid-Atlantic over the next few days, but parts of the Northeast could also pick up a few inches of rain by the time this latest system moves out of the region. Miami shattered a daily rain record Monday, as rounds of heavy rain flooded streets in the metro area and across large portions of Central and South Florida. The system responsible for the rounds of rain is now offshore, but deep tropical moisture from the Gulf remains in place and could bring scattered showers to the Sunshine State through Tuesday afternoon. Miami tallied 4.35 inches of rain on Monday, breaking the city's daily record for May 12 of 2.72 inches, set in 1943. Areas of western North Carolina still in recovery mode due to the deadly destruction caused by Hurricane Helene last year were again on alert for flash flooding Monday as a potent storm system brought rounds of torrential rain and thunderstorms to communities across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. The FOX Forecast Center said the threat came from the same system that brought flooding rain and severe weather, including reports of tornadoes and waterspouts, to cities along the Gulf Coast over the weekend. The Kilauea volcano has erupted for the 21st time in the last five months. This latest episode is part of an eruption that began Dec. 23, 2024. According to the U.s. Geological Survey (USGS), these eruptions have been separated by brief pauses in activity since then. The breaks can last anywhere between 24 hours and 12 days. Kilauea paused again by Monday. Video footage from the USGS showed the volcano burst with lava, as the molten liquid splattered along the dark, charred mountain like paint on a blank canvas. Each burst of lava splashed along the mountain, creating a larger crater atop the main vent of the volcano. Here are a few more stories you might find interesting. Watch: Kilauea volcano in Hawaii violently erupts for the 21st time in 5 months

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK – The Kilauea volcano erupted for the 21st time in the last five months over the weekend. This latest episode is part of an eruption that began Dec. 23, 2024. According to the U.s. Geological Survey, these eruptions have been separated by brief pauses in activity since then. The breaks can last anywhere between 24 hours and 12 days. Kilauea paused again by Monday. Video footage from the USGS showed the volcano burst with lava as the molten liquid splatters along the dark, charred mountain like paint on a blank canvas. Each burst of lava splashes along the mountain, creating a larger crater atop the main vent of the volcano. According to the National Park Service, a vent is the opening or place at the Earth's surface through which magma or volcanic gases are emitted. The fiery liquid fountain spewed from the mountain's main vent, with the USGS reporting an estimated height of more than 500 feet. The strong and consistent bursts created a stream of lava along the mountain's base. According to officials, the eruption occurred within a closed area of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The primary concern is the high levels of volcanic gas that can have far-reaching effects downwind. See it: Lava spews into air as Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts for 19th time since December

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK– Kilauea on Hawaii has erupted for the 19th time in four months. Timelapse footage from the U.s. Geological Survey showed the eruption happening Thursday night. The video captured the beginning of the fountaining, with short bursts of lava peaking up from the vent of the volcano, along with thick steam. As the video progresses, the fountains of lava become larger and more frequent, until the molten rock is continuously erupting from the volcano. Underwater Volcano Off Oregon's Coast Inching Closer To Eruption, Scientists Say The larger fountains occurred at night, and the video shows the magnificent contrast between the black sky and the bright, orange lava. The USGS reported Lava shooting roughly 330 feet into the air during this eruption before ending about 8 hours later on Friday morning. Since Dec. 23, 2024, Kilauea has erupted numerous times, all in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater within the summit caldera. Each eruptive episode has been separated by short breaks, sometimes hours apart, sometimes days. Kilauea's last eruption happened on April 22, according to USGS data. How To Watch Fox Weather All eruptive activity remains within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hazards during this latest eruption included volcanic gas emissions, as well as windblown volcanic glass, known as Pele's hair, and tephra. Tephra is rock fragments and other debris ejected from a volcano during an eruption. The USGS said another episode is likely to happen, given the rapid rebound of recorded summit tilt from deflation to inflation at the end of the 19th episode, along with the continuation of weak tremor being recorded at the article source: See it: Lava spews into air as Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts for 19th time since December
