Regina flag football team ready to compete in third straight international competition

WATCH: A team of U15 boys from Regina are headed to Canton to represent Canada on the world stage. It's been a great year for the 15U Raiders flag football team, who've been cruising their way through the season and will soon be heading to the U.S. for an international competition. Going 7-1 in the regular season, the only game they lost - was a forfeit due to a lack of players. Players have different perspectives on how, and if they lose. 'I think our team is pretty good. So, I don't know if we'll lose,' said Xavier, a receiver with the team. 'We're probably going to lose maybe once, but it's going to happen eventually. We're ready for that, though,' Kai, a receiver and defensive back said. A lack of players won't be a concern this week, as the team travels to represent Canada on the international stage. Ten players and two coaches are heading to Ohio, the home of the pro football hall of fame, to compete against some of the top flag football teams in the world. 'Internationally, it's a different competition every single year,' said Kymani, a defensive back and safety. 'They have Puerto Rico that's a really new team and we played against teams like Mexico before.' This is the third year in row that the Raiders have had the chance to compete internationally, going to Las Vegas in 2023 and Orlando in 2024. 'Week in and week out, through practices and just through game playing, the boys have just gotten better and better,' said Mike Thomas, the Raiders' head coach. 'The group has grown up together, developing chemistry throughout the years. 'They're really dialed in and really understand what we're trying to do. So, what we've been able to focus on are just the finer points, just angles, viewpoints, releases all those things, and they've really come to accept that and grow and take in the coaching,' Their competition includes teams from all over the world, representing countries like Australia, Brazil and China. The tournament starts Thursday July 17, with the final game taking place on Sunday, July 20.

A Leading Canadian University Makes A Pitch For Top U.S. PhD Students

Western University has announced a lucrative bid to recruit top U.S. doctoral students to pursue ... More their graduate education in Canada. Western University, one of Canada's leading public research universities, is launching an initiative aimed at luring away top-tier PhD students from the U.S. The recently announced US-CAN Doctoral Excellence Awards are specifically designed to attract doctoral students who have been 'impacted by the recent changes in higher education in the United States.' The new program is being selective in its outreach, however, targeting students who 'have received an offer from, or have had an offer rescinded by a doctoral program at an American university ranked on the Top 100 QS Top Universities or the Top 100 Times Higher Education (THE)' Applicants must also meet the admission requirements of the Western doctoral program they are seeking to join. The initiative will provide 25 PhD students up to $160,000 CAD ($40,000 per year) for up to four years of study in one of the university's research-based doctoral programs. It also features an expedited admissions process and special support in securing a thesis supervisor. A founding member of the U15, which is Canada's group of most distinguished research universities, Western University is located in London, Ontario. While the institution's official name remains the University of Western Ontario, it was rebranded Western University in 2012. Western's pitch to U.S. doctoral students is part of a larger strategy to boost its graduate and postdoctoral footprint. As part of that effort, it's doubling its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program from 19 to 40 awards. That program offers a $70,000 annual stipend for two years plus benefits, a small research allowance, and a $15,000 top-up for postdoctoral scholars holding federal awards. 'These investments come at a critical time, as global competition for research talent continues to intensify. Early career scholars are looking for institutions that offer not only financial support, but also stability, mentorship and a clear path to impact,' said Florentine Strzelczyk, provost and academic vice-president at Western University, in a news release. 'By expanding our support for both postdoctoral scholars and doctoral students, Western is strengthening its research capacity and demonstrating a long-term commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars and innovators.' According to the announcement, Western University receives more than $267 million in annual research funding and offers over 50 doctoral programs across the sciences, humanities and social sciences. Currently, there are more than 2,500 doctoral students and 300 postdoctoaral scholars at Western. 'Western offers a strong, supportive and inclusive research environment where top global talent can pursue impactful work amid a rapidly changing post-secondary landscape,' said Kamran Siddiqui, Western Univeristy's vice-provost for graduate and postdoctoral studies. 'We look forward to welcoming new researchers whose research, scholarship and creative activity is advancing solutions to the complex challenges facing society.' Canadian universities have seen a surge in applications from U.S. graduate students in recent months, an indication of the uncertainty students are feeling as the Trump administration continues its campaign to reshape higher education in this country. According to Reuters, the University of British Columbia reported a 27% increase in graduate applications from the U.S. as of March, and the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo have also observed increased interest by U.S. students. With many U.S. universities finding their research funding slashed, they've cut back on PhD admissions and financial support. In addition, their international students are being singled out for legal proceedings, and academic freedom at several prominent institutions is coming under increasing fire from a series of unprecedented government demands and hastily conducted investigations. It should come as no surprise that American graduate students are searching for more supportive environments where they can pursue their studies. Look for more Canadian universities to be rolling out the red carpet for them.

Anger as Limerick FC remove underage teams from LOI Academy

There was shock and anger at the decision by Limerick FC owner Pat O'Sullivan to remove the remaining two League of Ireland teams under the clubs name last weekend. It is understood that Mr. O'Sullivan, who is now Club President, sent correspondence to the FAI that the club would no longer participate in the national leagues with immediate effect. The Men's U15 and U17 teams had been gearing up for a tilt at Phase 2 of the League of Ireland Academy. On May 24th, the club gave a walkover to Dundalk in the U15 League of Ireland Academy fixture. This despite victories over Kerry and Waterford earlier in the month. The same weekend at U17 level, the side were defeated 10-0 by Shamrock Rovers, in Charleville. That looks to be the last of 11 defeats for the team with any U-turn with the FAI to re-introduce the team, so far falling on deaf ears. The club had advertised Academy Trials for both sides on May 13thand again on June 9th, via their official Facebook page. Playing home games at North Cork base in Charleville, the team has also trained in Seanchoill Sports Complex, Co. Clare. As reported in the Limerick Leader, upwards of 30 members of the combined squads gathered to hold signs stating 'Let Us Play' earlier this week, showing their unified displeasure at the decision. There is a swell of movement to try and reverse the decision, which includes parents, coaches and other members of the club. Limerick City North Councillor Frankie Daly, who is the Head Coach of the U15 side, is among the cohort who are attempting to get the team re-instated to allow the youngsters to continue to play on this platform. The club last fielded a Men's team in the 2019 First Division have lost their female teams as well as the Men's U20 (formerly U19) teams. Their women's team also ceased at the end of that season. In 2019, the senior side placed sixth in the second tier but were deducted 26 points post season, moving them to tenth, bottom. This was due to an examiner being appointed the club late in that season. It was another challenge for the club who'd gone through a most challenging period financially which included the club launching High Court Proceedings against the FAI. Limerick FC have yet to reply to requests for comment. Read More Aston Villa forward Charlie Lutz joins Cork City on loan
