UAE jiu-jitsu team clinch three medals at World Games Chengdu
The heroes of the jiu-jitsu national team succeeded in winning three medals in the competitions of the second day of the World Games Chengdu 2025. Saeed Al Kubaisi claimed gold in the under-85kg division after a series of strong bouts against opponents from Portugal, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Mehdi Al Awlaki won silver in the under-77kg division, while Mohammed Al Suwaidi earned silver in the under-69kg division. Considered a global showpiece for sports yet to be included in the Olympic Games, the 12th edition of the World Games, which runs in the Chinese city from Aug. 7 to 17, 2025, features nearly 5,000 athletes from 118 countries competing across 34 sports, making it one of the most prominent international sporting events. Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: 'Jiu-jitsu in the UAE has proven its excellence and its ability to succeed at every opportunity, supported by the sport's continued growth and the achievements of our national team on both continental and global stages. 'Our athletes have consistently made the nation proud in regional and international arenas, and today's result is even more significant given the presence of top-ranked competitors from around the world. This success is the result of the Federation's ongoing efforts and initiatives to prepare our athletes to perform at the highest level.' Gold medallist Kubaisi said: 'I entered the championship confident in my ability to win gold, as it's the natural result of the hard work and intensive training we've put in over recent months. 'I want to thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation for the support they have given us, helping us reach this stage and make our mark at a global event of this scale.' Awlaki said: 'The final was tough, but I never gave up and kept pushing until the last second because my goal was gold. I'm happy to take silver in such an important championship, and I'm confident there is more to come.' Tomorrow, Emirati athletes will compete in the open weight division, with Mehdi Al Awlaki, Saeed Al Kubaisi, and Mohammed Al Suwaidi in the men's category, and Asma Alhosani, Shamsa Al Amri, and Shamma Al Kalbani in the women's category.

The national team previously participated in the 2017 World Games in Wroc?aw, Poland, winning two medals – one gold and one silver. They delivered a strong showing again at the 2022 edition in Birmingham, USA, securing five medals: two gold, one silver, and two bronze. World Games Chengdu 2025 will bring together nearly 5,000 athletes from 118 countries competing across 34 sports, making it one of the most prominent international sporting events. Mubarak Saleh Al Menhali, Director of the Technical Department at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said the team is aiming to achieve a new milestone that will further strengthen the UAE's position regionally and globally. He noted that the current squad features experienced male and female athletes who have consistently performed at the highest level. 'We are confident our athletes are fully prepared for the championship. They've put in a lot of work through both local and overseas training camps, which helped enhance their physical and mental readiness. They also completed intensive technical and fitness sessions to ensure they are in peak condition heading into the competition.' Former champion Faisal Al Ketbi, who is travelling with the team, added: 'Our team has a good chance of winning medals at the World Games, especially as they're currently among the top-ranked. We held a training camp in Brazil before the event, focusing on sharpening technique and improving overall fitness. The team is ready, morale is high, and after winning two gold medals last time, we're aiming for more this year.' The men's team includes Mohammed Al Suwaidi (69kg), Mehdi Al Awlaki (77kg), and Saeed Al Kubaisi (85kg). On the women's side, the team features Asma Alhosani (52kg), Shamsa Al Amri (57kg), and Shamma Al Kalbani (63kg). The UAE team will begin its campaign on August 10 when the jiu-jitsu competitions kick off, running through August 12.

The fourth round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship concluded today (Sunday) at Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City, wrapping up with exciting competitions in the Kids and Under-12 divisions (Gi category). The final day saw strong participation from young athletes and enthusiastic support from families and fans, turning the arena into a vibrant community platform that highlighted the event's role in combining sports, entertainment, and social engagement. Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club secured first place in the overall rankings, with Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club finishing second and Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club taking third. The final day was attended by several dignitaries, including H.E.
