Dubai Open Karate Championship ends on high note

The first-ever Dubai Open Karate Championship concluded on a high note, impressing spectators and participants alike with its exceptional level of competition and strong turnout. Organised by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) and the UAE Karate Federation in cooperation with the Mentor Sports Academy, the competition witnessed participation from more than 280 players representing 13 teams, including three government clubs and nine private sports academies from across the UAE. Competitions in all categories of Kata and Kumite for various age groups were held at the indoor hall of Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club. The organisation of the Dubai Open Karate Championship is part of the Dubai Sports Council's efforts to discover and develop sporting talent in line with the Dubai Government's policy of supporting talent in various fields. The winners were crowned by Major General Eng. Nasser Abdul Razzaq Al Razooqi, President of the UAE and Asian Karate Federations and Vice President of the International Karate Federation, in the presence of Ahmed Salem Al Mahri, Director of the Sports Talent Department at the Dubai Sports Council. Major General Eng. Razooqi expressed his pride in the success of the tournament, the level of organisation and the participation in all age categories. He further emphasized on the importance of continuing such events, which contribute to spreading karate and strengthening its status, especially as it is one of the oldest self-defence sports practiced in Dubai and throughout the UAE. Ahmed Salem Al Mahri, Director of the Sports Talent Department at the Dubai Sports Council, emphasized the importance of these tournaments in strengthening development programmes for talent in all sports. He noted that the participation of more than 280 male and female players in the first edition of the Karate Championship reflects the event's success. The Board of Directors of the UAE Karate Federation held a meeting, chaired by Major General (Ret.) Nasser Al Razooqi, President of the UAE and Asian Karate Federations and Vice President of the World Karate Federation. The meeting focused on reviewing the results of the World Youth League Karate Championship, which was held in Fujairah from February 20 to 23 at the Zayed Sports Complex. A record-breaking 2,300 athletes from 87 countries around the world are participating in the third edition of the Karate 1-Youth League Fujairah. The medal tally soared to 28 after Arab athletes clinched 10 medals on the third day, including three gold, two silvers, and five bronzes. The first two days of the competition saw a total of 18 medals, consisting of two golds, three silvers, and 13 bronzes. The medals on the third day highlighted remarkable Egyptian performances, with three gold medals won by Egyptian athletes including Malak Afifi in the kumite under 47 kg, Hala Afifi in the kumite under 61 kg, and Sayed Shaheen in the kumite over 70 kg. There were also two silver medals, earned by Palestinian Mariam Busharat in the kumite over 61 kg, and Egyptian Baher Abdel Salam in the kata over 61 kg. Additionally, five bronze medals were claimed by Egyptian Noorhan El-Morsy in the kumite under 61 kg, Jordanian Baraa Al-Saidi in the kumite under 63 kg, Egyptian Baher Abdel Salam in the kumite over 70 kg, Qatari Hassan Al-Sheikh in the kumite over 70 kg, and Jordanian Qasim Al-Omari in the kumite over 70 kg. Mohamed Al-Dahrawi, President of the Egyptian Karate Federation and Executive Board Member of the World Karate Federation, confirmed that Fujairah successfully organized the 2025 World Youth Karate League season opener. Rashid Abdul Majid Al Ali, Vice President of both the UAE and Asian Karate Federations and Executive Board Member of the World Karate Federation, and Bolat Kflakat, Vice President of the Kazakhstan Karate Federation signed the agreement. The ceremony was also attended by Major General Nasser Al Razooqi, President of the UAE and Asian Karate Federations and Vice President of the World Karate Federation, and Almaz Tasbolat, the Consul General of Kazakhstan.
