KHDA Releases Academic Calendar for Dubai Private Schools with Key Holiday Dates
The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has released the official academic calendar for all private schools in Dubai, detailing term dates and key holiday breaks for the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 academic years. Schools that begin in September will start the upcoming academic year in August 2024, with winter break commencing in early December and classes resuming in January. Spring break is scheduled for late March 2025, with students returning in early April. The academic year must not end before 27 June 2025, ensuring the minimum requirement of 182 school days is met. For schools that follow an April start, the 2025–2026 academic year will begin on 7 April 2025. Summer break starts at the end of June, followed by a return to class in late August. Winter break begins on 15 December 2025, with the academic year concluding by the end of March 2026, pending fulfillment of school day requirements. The calendar also includes tentative dates for public holidays such as Eid and UAE National Day. Schools will confirm these dates once they are officially declared by the federal government. Parents are encouraged to check individual school profiles for tailored calendars. Regardless of curriculum, all Dubai private schools are required to follow the KHDA-approved academic structure. UAE: When is Islamic New Year, and do we get a public holiday?
Mark your calendars… We just got confirmation about the Eid Al Adha 2025 holidays this June, but if you're a planner and planning ahead, we have another public holiday in the same month – Islamic New Year. Islamic New Year is also referred to as Hijri New Year. It marks the start of the Islamic lunar year (the first day of Muharram), which is based on the sighting of the new moon. Islamic New Year in 2025 is set to fall on Thursday, June 26, 2025. It won't be a long weekend, but it will bring you a mini-break in the workweek. However, a s this holiday is also tied to the moon sighting, we will have to wait for confirmation from the UAE officials. What is the significance of Hijri New Year? Hijri or Hijiri comes from the Arabic word Al Hijra meaning 'flight' or 'migration' and it marks the day that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) travelled from Makkah to the city of Al Madina El Monawara, in the Gregorian calendar year of 622AD. What other public holidays are there in 2025? If you're curious, we do some more public holidays after Islamic New Year. Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) birthday will then fall on Friday, September 5, 2025. If it is a confirmed holiday by the UAE, this means we will get a three-day-long weekend (for those of us who have a two-day weekend). After September 2025, our next public holiday is in December for Commemoration Day and UAE National Day. Commemoration Day falls on Monday, December 1, and UAE National Day will follow directly after on December 2 and 3 which are Tuesday and Wednesday. Which means, if you enjoy a two-day weekend, you will have a lovely five-day-long weekend. However, we will have to wait for the official announcements, so stay tuned to for the announcements. What are the next UAE public holidays after Eid Al Adha? Here are the big holidays of 2025
With Eid Al Adha bringing a welcome four-day weekend in early June, many across the UAE are already asking the next logical question: when's the next break? Whether you're hoping to travel, spend time with family, or simply hit pause, there's still more to look forward to this year. The UAE Cabinet has confirmed 12 official public holidays for 2025, and with Eid behind us, three are still to come. Here's a quick look at what's next and how to make the most of each one. Quick recap: Eid Al Adha in early June According to the moon-sighting committee, Arafat Day will fall on Thursday, 5 June, with Eid Al Adha beginning on Friday, 6 June. With regular weekends factored in, most UAE residents will enjoy a four-day break through Sunday, 8 June. This extended weekend marks one of the longest public holidays of the year, combining religious observance with a chance to unwind. 1. Islamic New Year – Thursday, 26 June Just a few weeks later, the UAE will mark the first day of Muharram, signalling the start of the Islamic New Year. While this is a quieter, more reflective occasion—often observed with prayer and family time—it also offers a smart opportunity for a long weekend. Since it falls on a Thursday, those who take Friday off as annual leave can enjoy another four-day break. 2. Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Birthday – Friday, 5 September Known as Mawlid Al-Nabi , this holiday commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and lands on Friday, 5 September this year. It's traditionally observed through religious lectures, community events, and gatherings. The timing—on a Friday—naturally sets up a three-day weekend, providing a break just as the post-summer routine begins to settle in. 3. UAE National Day – Tuesday and Wednesday, 2–3 December The final—and perhaps most festive—public holiday of the year is UAE National Day, marking the unification of the Emirates in 1971. Falling on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2–3 December, this two-day celebration promises flag-waving parades, fireworks, concerts, and widespread festivities. If you're strategic, adding Monday and Thursday to your annual leave could transform the week into a five-day mini-vacation—perfect for a staycation or travel getaway to wrap up the year. A few things to remember Holiday shifts are possible: Except for Eid, the UAE government reserves the right to move holidays to the start or end of the week. No makeup days: If a public holiday falls on a weekend, it typically won't be compensated. Emirate-specific exceptions: Local governments may declare additional holidays for events unique to each emirate or institution. So while the year's major Eid holidays may be behind us, 2025 still holds a few more opportunities to unwind. Whether you're planning around spiritual observance, national pride, or simply in need of a break—mark those dates and plan ahead. According to tradition, Eid Al Adha is held to honour Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, after being instructed to do so by God. Prophet Ibrahim told his son of the dream, and the son then told his father to follow the order. But God intervened, sending a sheep to take his son's place. The occasion of Eid Al Adha is usually marked with a few days off for both the public and private sectors. At the moment, the public holiday has only been announced for the public sector, but we can expect the announcement to come in for the private sector soon. What other public holidays are there in 2025? After Eid Al Adha, the next public holiday in 2025 is the Islamic New Year which will fall on Friday, June 27, 2025. Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) birthday will then fall on Monday, September 1, 2025. After September, our next public holiday is in December for Commemoration Day and UAE National Day.
