Students 'great ideas' to boost UAE-US ties, says top official
Students in the UAE — the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs — are set to play a pivotal role in strengthening the strategic partnership between UAE and the United States, said Martina Strong, US Ambassador to the UAE, during a recent event in Dubai. Her remarks pointed at the importance of youth engagement and cross-border innovation as critical elements in advancing UAE-US bilateral cooperation across future-focused sectors. Speaking at a ceremony that honoured students for their entrepreneurial achievements, Strong highlighted the enduring and evolving partnership between the two nations. 'We are at the core very entrepreneurial, very pioneering as nations, as people, as companies, as private sectors and I think that aligns us so well as partners in so many different fields,' she said. According to Wam, the UAE is already home to more than 1,800 American companies, and this number is expected to grow due to the positive impact of the visit. The Injaz event, which celebrated youth-led innovation, came just weeks after US President Donald Trump concluded his historic visit to the UAE, the final leg of his Gulf tour following stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Speaking at the event, Strong said: 'As many of you know, we had a big visit just a couple of weeks ago here. President Trump came to Abu Dhabi. It was a historic visit…an amazing visit. I hope that those of you who watched it on TV got a sense of the excitement and energy that this visit generated, but it was also very substantive.' Trump arrived in Abu Dhabi on May 15 and was officially welcomed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The ceremony also included members of the community, such as outstanding students from space camps, astronauts, and space mission engineers. During his meeting with Sheikh Mohamed, Trump underscored the strong and enduring partnership between the US and the UAE. The visiting President later toured the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Notably, the visit marked the first by a US president to the UAE since 2008. Students to propel partnership Strong noted that the discussions between the two leaders focused on long-term mutual gains. 'It should not surprise you that the two presidents, US President Trump and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed, focused on our shared prosperity as kind of a key pillar of our bilateral partnership going forward,' she said. UAE announced a $1.4 trillion investment in artificial intelligence in the US and expressed the country's desire to collaborate with the US in promoting global peace and stability. 'They talked about all of the major fields in which we are working together, from artificial intelligence and frontier technology to energy, space exploration, health, life sciences. It's a very, long list,' Strong added. 'But suffice it to say that the two presidents charted a very ambitious path forward … and as I thought about who is going to get all this work done, I think I know it's going to be all of you (students) and your great work, your great ideas, innovation, creativity that will propel our partnership forward in the years ahead.' Reaffirming the US mission's commitment to supporting youth innovation, Strong added, 'The US mission is truly proud to support entrepreneurship among our young generations because it advances our shared objective, and that objective is prosperity for today and for years and decades to come. This is generated through economic growth, through innovation, cooperation and partnerships and really taking advantage of the opportunities.'

UAE, US Presidents attend unveiling of Phase 1 of new 5GW AI campus in Abu Dhabi
A new 5GW UAE-US AI Campus in Abu Dhabi was unveiled today at Qasr Al Watan in the presence of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and President Donald Trump of the United States of America, who is on a state visit to the UAE. The new AI campus, the largest outside the US, will be home to US hyperscalers and large enterprises that can leverage the capacity for regional 'compute resources' with the ability to serve the Global South. The UAE-US AI campus will include 5GW of capacity for AI data centres in Abu Dhabi, providing a regional platform from which US hyperscalers will be able to offer latency-friendly services to nearly half of the global population. Once completed, the facility will leverage nuclear, solar, and gas power to minimise carbon emissions and will also house a science park driving advancements in AI innovation. The campus will be built by G42 and operated in partnership with several US companies. The endeavour builds on a new framework by the two countries' governments – the US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership – to deepen cooperation and collaboration on AI and advanced technologies. The UAE and US will work together to regulate access to the compute resources, which are reserved for US hyperscalers and approved cloud service providers. H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC), said, 'Today's unveiling of this campus is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between our countries in artificial intelligence. It is an expression of the UAE's commitment to pioneering innovation and fostering global collaboration in artificial intelligence, strengthening the UAE's position as a hub for cutting-edge research and sustainable development, delivering transformative benefits for humanity.' US Secretary of Commerce Howard W Lutnick said, 'The announcement of the campus launches a historic Middle Eastern partnership on AI between our two nations. It promotes major investment in advanced semiconductors and data centres across the US and the UAE. In the UAE, American companies will operate the data centres and offer American-managed cloud services throughout the region. By extending the world's leading American tech stack to an important strategic partner in the region, this agreement is a major milestone in achieving President Trump's vision for US AI dominance.' The UAE has been a pioneer in encouraging AI adoption in commercial and governmental activities. In 2017 it became the first country to appoint a federal Minister of Artificial Intelligence, and in 2019 established the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. The country was also one of the first to launch a national AI strategy in 2017 – the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence – and is on track to become a global AI hub. This ambitious roadmap prioritises transformative AI integration across critical sectors, including education, healthcare, transportation, and energy, cementing the UAE's role as a pioneer in the global AI landscape. UAE-US renewable energy partnership drives global clean energy transition
ABU DHABI -- The strategic energy partnership between the United Arab Emirates and the United States continues to reinforce both countries' shared vision for a sustainable future. This collaboration is marked by significant joint investments in clean and renewable energy technologies, aimed at bolstering global energy security and supporting emerging economies. A key initiative is the UAE-US Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy (PACE), launched in November 2022, which seeks to mobilise US$100 billion in financing and investment to deploy 100GW of clean energy by 2035. As part of this effort, the two countries announced in January 2023 a $20 billion allocation to develop 15GW of clean energy projects in the United States by 2035. The initiative is being led by Masdar in partnership with private-sector investors from the United States. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) also joined the clean energy push by acquiring a 35 percent equity stake in ExxonMobil's blue hydrogen project in Texas, which will be capable of producing up to 1 billion cubic feet daily of blue hydrogen, with about 98 percent of carbon dioxide removed, and more than 1 million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia per year. In support of innovation, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy signed agreements with the University of Arizona and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to explore advanced clean energy technologies, including solar power in space and climate acceleration tools. The United States remains a core market for Masdar, which is targeting a clean energy portfolio of 25GW in the United States within a decade. Masdar's portfolio in the US comprises wind, solar and battery storage projects in California, Texas, New York, and New Mexico, reflecting the company's long-term commitment to transforming energy systems. Masdar's US activities began in January 2019 with investments in the Rocksprings and Sterling wind farms in Texas and New Mexico. In 2020, it partnered with EDF Renewables North America across a portfolio of seven operational projects comprising 1.3GW of operating capacity. In 2024, Masdar acquired a 50 percent stake is one of the USA's leading renewable power producer Terra-Gen, adding another 3.7GW of operating capacity, 6GW of under construction and advanced pipeline assets, as well as significant early stage pipeline. With this acquisition, Masdar's gross operating portfolio in the US now exceeds 5.0GW. Prior to the Terra-Gen acquisition, Masdar's 1.3GW portfolio in the US consisted of four utility-scale wind projects in Texas and New Mexico and five solar projects in California. Two of the solar projects, Big Beau and Desert Harvest, include battery energy storage systems. The acquisition of Terra-Gen added a gross operating portfolio of 3.7GW of wind, solar and battery storage projects, including 5.1GWh of energy storage facilities across 30 renewable power sites, predominantly in California and Texas. Terra-Gen is currently developing further 12GW of wind, solar and battery storage projects California, Texas and New York.
