Karnataka announces 61-day monsoon fishing ban from June 1

Representative Image UDUPI: The Karnataka government has announced a ban on mechanised fishing along the state's coast from June 1 to July 31 under the Karnataka Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1986. The 61-day prohibition aims to protect marine biodiversity during the monsoon season and support fish breeding cycles. According to the notification, the ban applies to all fishing activities carried out using mechanised boats and traditional boats fitted with inboard or outboard engines exceeding 10 horsepower. However, traditional or non-motorised boats and motorised boats with engines up to 10 HP are permitted to operate during this period. The state's Department of Fisheries has instructed all mechanised boats to return to port by May 31. Any vessels attempting to operate or dock after this deadline will face legal action, and violators will be disqualified from receiving subsidised diesel for one year at official delivery centres. Fishermen have also been advised to strictly comply with weather advisories issued during the monsoon. The Joint Director's Office of the Fisheries Department has urged coastal fishing communities to fully adhere to the directive.

Govt focused on improving farmers lives: Karnataka minister Laxmi Hebbalkar

UDUPI: Women and Child Development minister Laxmi Hebbalkar emphasised that under chief minister Siddaramaiah's leadership, the state administration is implementing initiatives focused on supporting and improving the lives of farmers. During the inauguration of a Raitha Samparka Kendra (RSK) at Koteshwara on Sunday, the minister highlighted that farmers in the state received consistent support, regardless of the governing administration. 'RSKs serve as vital information hubs, disseminating knowledge about cutting-edge agricultural technologies to farmers. Through these centres, farmers can enhance their earnings by adopting modern techniques. Operation Sindoor Amid flare-up hours after thaw, officials say things will settle down with time Ceasefire on, but pressure stays: Key decisions by India against Pak that still stand 'Will work with India & Pakistan to seek solution on Kashmir': Trump These facilities are tasked with providing details about governmental initiatives, superior quality seeds, and appropriate fertilisers for cultivation. While the agriculture department offers various subsidised equipment, farmers can only benefit from these schemes when officials ensure adequate awareness and publicity,' Hebbalkar said. She insisted that the district administration and the agriculture department work as a bridge between farmers and the govt. They have the responsibility to ensure that the benefits of all schemes reach the doorsteps of the farmers. The purpose of RSKs will be served only if officials work in this direction, she added. 'India is primarily an agricultural nation, and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri gave us the slogan of ' Jai Jawan , Jai Kisan '. All of us know very well that we will have to remain hungry if our farmers stay away from the farms. If our nation is developing as a 'Vishwa Guru', it is an outcome of the hard work and dedication of the farmers that paved the way for this achievement. India, which was importing food grains, has become an exporter as we are growing crops excessively,' she said. 'Through divine intervention and the collective goodwill of well-wishers, I survived a severe accident that could have been fatal. I stand before you today, grateful for this second chance at life,' the minister said. Kundapur MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi said that there is a need for the govt to announce a support price for paddy. He said that the area of paddy cultivation is dwindling. He mentioned previous experiences of farmers who faced inconvenience due to a shortage of seeds. Officials ensured a sufficient stock of seeds, he said, adding that the information needs to be shared among farmers. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna alleges anti-communal task force targets hindu activists

UDUPI: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna on Sunday claimed that the anti-communal task force announced by Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, in the backdrop of the murder of VHP activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru, would work against Hindu activists. In a statement on Saturday night, Suvarna stated that the aim behind forming such a force by the government is to target Hindu activists and frame them in false cases. He further said that Parameshwara was pressurised by the Muslim community leaders during the former's recent visit to Mangaluru in this regard, and the home minister succumbed to the pressure tactics. He said that during a meeting chaired by Parameshwara in Mangaluru recently, the Muslim community leaders expressed their anger while asserting their viewpoints, despite police presence. The ministers who came to Dakshina Kannada did not even consult local MLAs to discuss about restoring peace. ' 'Earlier, the Congress government didn't agree to form an anti-narcotics wing, however, now with the intention to curb the voice of Hindu activists, it is going ahead with forming an anti-communal task force,' he rued. This way, the state government wants to portray the 'coastal district' as being communally-sensitive, which could impede its economic and social development. Suvarna also sought the resignation of Assembly Speaker UT Khader, alleging that the latter tried to influence the investigation by falsely stating that Fazil's family had no role in Shetty's murder. ''Now details have emerged that Fazil's brother is the prime accused in Shetty's murder. Khader should resign,' he demanded.

The event was conducted jointly by the District Administration and the Udupi Zilla Panchayat in connection with the comprehensive survey of Scheduled Castes and their sub-castes. Speaking on the survey related to the internal reservation classification for Scheduled Castes initiated by the one-man commission led by Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das, she said data collection will be done through a mobile app. The survey will be conducted in three phases in the district. For this purpose, primary and high school teachers have been selected as taluk-level master trainers. These trained enumerators are expected to collect accurate data within the stipulated timeframe. She stated that this survey will be beneficial in providing social justice and reducing economic disparity among people living in different areas and involved in various professions. It will also help these communities benefit from govt schemes in the future. She urged the SC community to fully cooperate by providing information during the house visits. The data collection will be carried out in three phases starting from May 5. In the first phase, from May 5 to 17, enumerators will visit each household. The second phase, from May 19 to 21, will involve special camps to collect data from SC families missed during the first phase. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the third phase, individuals will be given the option to self-declare their details online. The district comprises five assembly constituencies. Each constituency will require about 200–250 enumerators. In total, 1,112 teachers are being trained and deployed for data collection. The DC said that the master trainers must give special attention to documenting the original caste in the survey. She also said that one supervisor will be appointed for every 10–12 enumerators. The survey will begin based on the voter list of households. Enumerators will log in to the mobile application using an OTP received on their registered mobile numbers and enter 42 different types of self-declared family member information.
