Cory Sandhagen criticizes Sean O'Malley's resume, hopes to prove he's better
Cory Sandhagen criticizes Sean O'Malley's resume, hopes to prove he's better UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen believes there are plenty of good fights available at the top of the division, but hopes to mix it up with Sean O'Malley to prove who is better. Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) wants to fight for the 135-pound title, first and foremost. He may get the chance to kill two birds with one stone should O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) defeat current champion Merab Dvalishvili in their upcoming title rematch at UFC 316 on June 7 in Newark, N.J. "I think I'm sitting in a good spot, I just gotta persuade 'em, you know?" Sandhagen said on "Overdogs Podcast." "I did my best in my last fight." Sandhagen returned to the win column earlier this month with a second-round TKO stoppage of former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo. The 33-year-old believes his strength of schedule is solid enough to warrant a title shot next. While Sandhagen admits Petr Yan, whom he fought for an interim title at UFC 267, also has a strong resume, he can't say the same about O'Malley, who landed an immediate rematch after losing to Dvalishvili at UFC 306. "When you think about O'Malley, he's had a good run at stuff, but I think if you fight tough guys for long enough, there's going to be nights where you just don't win, you know what I mean?" Sandhagen said. "Because all of these guys are really good, and I've fought the best guys for a really long time. Not a lot of other people in the division really get to say that except for maybe Yan and Merab. "O'Malley's not really one of those guys that gets to say that he's fought all of the best of the best of the division. I think that when he does that, he's gonna have off nights and he's gonna lose. I sometimes have off nights, and I've lost. That's just how fighting works." Should O'Malley walk away with the title at UFC 316, Sandhagen hopes it leads to a title shot because it's one of the fights fans have wanted to see for some time. Both offer unique striking styles, which makes for an intriguing matchup, and he'll get the opportunity to put online arguments about who's better to rest. "I think that when me and O'Malley fight, I'll get to show that I'm a lot better than him," Sandhagen said. "Unless I get that opportunity, I don't really feel like arguing with the ether of the internet about who's better at what. I think I'll definitely get that opportunity to show that one of these days."

Petr Yan willing to face rising bantamweight if Cory Sandhagen rejects UFC title eliminator
Petr Yan willing to face rising bantamweight if Cory Sandhagen rejects UFC title eliminator Petr Yan is eager to stay active in his pursuit to reclaim the UFC bantamweight title. Yan (18-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) called out Cory Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) after Sandhagen defeated Deiveson Figueiredo in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 67 main event in Des Moines, Iowa. Sandhagen wants a title shot next, but Yan pitched a title eliminator instead. Sandhagen lost to Yan in their interim title fight at UFC 267 in October 2021. Yan wasn't able to reclaim his bantamweight title when he lost to Aljamain Sterling a second time, which resulted in a three-fight losing skid. However, Yan has now won back-to-back fights over Song Yadong and Figueiredo, and doesn't like Sandhagen asking for a title shot after just one win. "Last fight with Umar, Cory lost," Yan told Submission Radio. "If you remember my fight with Cory, 2021, I beat him too, and after I lose fight, I won two fights. Won two (against) good fighters. Song Yadong, he's a top fighter, same Figueiredo. I believe title fight (is next). If Cory wants to fight, we can do a rematch with him, same time, July in Abu Dhabi, Fight Night. I can give him a rematch, and we will know who deserves the title fight." If not Sandhagen, Yan is willing to fight anyone who will get him back to a title fight. He was asked about rumors surrounding a fight with rising bantamweight Marcus McGhee. "It's not fake," Yan said of rumors of McGhee. "I want to be active in my sport career, I want to fight. We tried to fight in Azerbaijan with Umar (Nurmagomedov). When he have injury, he can't fight in June, July. His team don't talk nothing. They team Khabib talk, he will be ready only October. I can't wait until October. October will be one year I don't fight. I want to fight June, July, I will be ready. ... I will fight with McGhee. If he ready, we can do it. We can do big fight, big show. "If Cory doesn't want to find out who really deserves the next shot in a fight, which I really doubt that he wants because he remembered what happened in the last fight, last time before his last fight, he was telling that he's better, but what happens? He had to stand up from the canvas in that fight. So of course, if no one else is available or no one else wants it, I will fight someone who who wants, and if it's McGhee, then it's McGhee. I want to stay active, and I want to prove with my actions that I'm the one who deserves to fight for the belt, not just by winning one fight and just waiting for it for the shot."

UFC's Cory Sandhagen willing to fight Petr Yan – but on one condition
UFC's Cory Sandhagen willing to fight Petr Yan – but on one condition Cory Sandhagen would consider entertaining Petr Yan's callout but not right away. Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) called for a title shot after defeating Deiveson Figueiredo in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 67 main event. Sandhagen was called out by Yan (18-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who defeated him to claim the interim title at UFC 267 in October 2021. Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) runs things back with Sean O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the UFC 316 main event on June 7 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sandhagen prefers waiting for the outcome of that fight first before accepting a Yan rematch. "Yeah, sure, I'm not going to commit to that until after the title fight," Sandhagen said on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "I'm not opposed to fighting Yan. I would love to fight Yan, especially because he likes spreading the narrative like remember what happened last time we fought. Like, Yan, dude, I took that on four weeks' notice, on your side of the world, in a fight I only had a month to get ready for, and he's a really good fighter. "You need more time than that to get ready for the guy. And not to mention, I was winning that fight all the way up until I got hit with like that crazy spinny, weird sh*t that he hit me with that I'll never let him hit me with again. Let's not act like that was like a one-sided fight. Because I was winning that fight until I got dropped at the end of the third. If it means fighting Yan again, then for sure, but I mean, the title should be next for me." If a title shot isn't next for Sandhagen, he has a suggestion to up the stakes for a potential rematch with Yan. "I like Yan, though," Sandhagen said. "Me and Yan are cut from the same cloth, and I know that he feels that, too. He's like a gritty, mean guy when he fights, and I'm a gritty, mean guy when I fight, too. I think we're both about that life. I like Yan. If I was going to entertain Yan for anything, just to throw out a teaser or an idea, if I don't get the title shot next, maybe me and Yan for the baddest motherf*cker bantamweight belt would be cool."
