The US Congress yesterday passed president Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' after a whirlwind 24 hours of last-minute arm-twisting of hold-out Republicans – and a record-breaking floor speech from Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The final vote was a narrow margin of 218-214, with every Democrat and two Republicans – Kentucky's Thomas Massie and Pennsylvania's Brian Fitzpatrick – voting against the measure, which features sweeping cuts to Medicaid and nutrition assistance programmes.
