SAG-AFTRA says Fortnite's AI Darth Vader voice violates fair labor practices

SAG-AFTRA, the labor union representing performers in film, television and interactive media, has submitted an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) filing against Epic Games for using an AI-generated version of Darth Vader's voice in the current season of Fortnite . Disney and Epic first announced on May 16 that Fortnite would feature a take on the character using an AI-generated version of James Earl Jones' voice. The issue in SAG-AFTRA's eyes is that the union is currently on strike while it negotiates a new contract with video game companies, and using an AI-generated voice represents Epic refusing to "bargain in good faith." The AI-powered version of Darth Vader is interactive, but that doesn't change the fact that the video game version of Darth Vader has frequently been played by actors other than Jones. Disney got permission from Jones and his family to use AI to replicate his voice for film and TV in 2022, so there is precedent for an AI performance of this kind. After Jones' death in September 2024, the AI route technically became the only way to use Darth Vader's "original voice," other than reusing clips of past performances. Unless of course Epic or Disney wanted to pay another actor to play Darth Vader, which would require coming to an agreement on a new contract for video game performers. ULP filings are reviewed by the National Labor Review Board and can lead to hearings and injunctive relief (a court ordering Epic to remove Darth Vader from the game until a settlement is reached, for example). They are also often used as a way for unions to provoke companies to come back to the bargaining table or respond with a more realistic offer. SAG-AFTRA's Interactive Media Strike has been ongoing since July 26, 2024. SAG-AFTRA members originally voted in favor of a strike in September 2023 for better wages and AI protections. Engadget has reached out to both Disney and Epic for comment on SAG-AFTRA's ULP filing. We'll update this article if we hear back.

LSA leaders urge Mizoram guv to dissolve current LADC

1 2 Aizawl: Lai Students' Association (LSA) leaders on Wednesday said they have submitted a letter to Mizoram governor Gen VK Singh on Tuesday, asking him to dissolve the current Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and make arrangements for fresh elections before the scheduled election to the 25-member LADC in Nov. Talking to media persons in southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai town, LSA president K Lalhuliana said there could not be any stable administration in the 11th LADC due to repeated toppling games played by unscrupulous politicians glamouring only the top positions. He said the lack of stability in the council and repeated ouster of executive committees have harmed the development of the people within the LADC. The LSA received information that horse-trading has been going on among the members of district council (MDCs) for the formation of a new executive committee in the LADC. Sources in the Aizawl Raj Bhavan said the governor had approved the appointment of N Zangura, recently elected leader of the United Legislature Party (ULP), as chief executive member of the LADC on Wednesday. He had sent the file to CM Lalduhoma. The ULP was formed by 11 MDCs of the Mizo National Front (MNF) and one BJP MDC and is being given outside support by former CEM C Lalmuanthanga, the lone Congress MDC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo ULP MDCs led by BJP MDC N Zangura, along with 11 MNF MDCs as well as the lone Congress MDC, had met Singh on April 23and staked claim to form the next executive committee in the LADC where Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) had been in power since nearly two months. However, another ZPM MDC Tuturu Singh, who was to be officially inducted to the BJP in Aizawl along with Zangura, allegedly changed his mind after meeting ZMP leaders at Lunglei town while proceeding towards Aizawl on April 23. Zangura said with MDC BN Thangpuia, who was inducted to the BJP on April 25, the ULP led by him still has the support of 13 members to form the next executive committee of the LADC without Tuturu Singh. There has been a change of guard for four times during the 11th term of the LADC since election was held in Nov 2020.

Liberals press economic credentials ahead of costings

Peter Dutton's claim to lead the party of superior economic management will be put to the test when the coalition releases its policy costings with two days to go until polling day. Mr Dutton and shadow treasurer Angus Taylor have promised their financial receipts, to be released on Thursday, will show an improvement to the federal budget if the coalition was elected. Savings have been assured by repealing Labor's $17 billion income tax cuts, axing investment in electricity transmission infrastructure and shrinking the size of the public service. "The Liberal Party is always a better economic manager, and interest rates have been higher for longer under Labor," Mr Dutton told journalists in Melbourne on Wednesday. But the coalition has also promised to increase spending, including a $20 billion regional investment fund, as well as measures that reduce the tax take over the next few years, such as a $1200 tax rebate and a $6 billion cut in the fuel excise by 25 cents a litre. Mr Dutton visited his 15th petrol station of the campaign on Wednesday to promise cheaper fuel. Before the last election, the coalition, under then-prime minister Scott Morrison, halved the fuel excise to counter surging petrol prices caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But the rationale for the cut this time around is less clear, given petrol prices are considerably cheaper than they were three years ago. Filling up a Holden Commodore belonging to the Liberal candidate for Aston, Manny Cicchiello, Mr Dutton selected the 91 octane ULP, costing 179 cents a litre. "Everybody is worse off under this prime minister, and only by voting for your Liberal or National candidate can we get rid of a bad government," he said at the BP service station in Scoresby in Melbourne's east. Mr Dutton will start Thursday in Brisbane, having visited 13 electorates out of a promised 28 in a final-week blitz before polls close on Saturday.

About 55,000 Los Angeles County workers go on strike, pausing some services

Tens of thousands of people who work for Los Angeles County went on strike Monday night, consequently disrupting some public services. The members of labor union SEIU 721 walked off their jobs after 7 p.m. Monday in an effort to negotiate for a new and fair contract with the county. Promising not to impact law enforcement and first responder services, this strike could, however, pause services ranging from parks and libraries to healthcare and social work. The union represents frontline workers, hundreds of whom were seen joining a picket line outside LA General Medical Center on Monday night – the first of the two-day strike. 'We are in the business of healthcare. We would never leave our patients in danger walking out,' Kelly Zhou, a nurse anesthetist, told KTLA's Carlos Saucedo. 'We gave 10 days' notice – this is the last resort.' SEIU 721 claims the county has repeatedly violated labor laws and failed to bargain in good faith on cost-of-living increases and health insurance. 'We've had to file 44 unfair labor practice charges against them,' said David Green, president and executive director of SEIU 721. 'It includes everything from not giving a fair deal at the table, not bargaining in good faith, health and safety issues.' According to the union's website, this Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike will directly impact more than 55,000 employees represented by SEIU 721 as well as nearly 10 million county residents. 'Also, we're talking about filling vacancies, there are 12 thousand vacancies in LA county right now,' added Green, 'And a huge amount of outsourcing, almost 7.8 billion in outsourcing. So these are all things we're talking about at the bargaining table.' The strike will close libraries and some healthcare clinics, and wildfire beach debris cleanup could also be affected. The union's contract expired at the end of March with no resolution in sight. 'All the healthcare providers are stressed and stretched thin, yet they're spending billions of dollars on contracting out,' said Zhou. 'I am open to creative solutions, but the bottom line is simple: we must not write checks that cannot be cashed,' Kathryn Barger, chair of the LA County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. 'Fiscal responsibility must guide our negotiations to both ensure the long-term stability of the County's services and operations and protect County jobs. Neither should be sacrificed.'
