Here are 40 interesting facts about AAPI celebs: In July 2022, Olivia Rodrigo wasn't following anyone on Instagram, so her fans quickly noticed when she suddenly started following her ex, Joshua Bassett. A year and a half later, she addressed the incident on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Here's the full clip, with this part at the 1:04 mark: Ken Jeong used to be a doctor! He was a pre-med major at Duke University. He went to UNC-Chapel Hill for medical school then practiced medicine for several years before going into acting full-time. Taking a drama class sophomore year inspired him to double major in drama, but he ultimately dropped the idea on his dad's advice. However, his dad gave him an ultimatum — if he got into medical school, he'd "give him the opportunity to develop his hobby and go anywhere in the world to develop his hobby." Ken continued doing college theater on the side, then during the summer between undergrad and medical school, his dad paid for him to take theater classes at UCLA. During medical school, he got into stand-up comedy. It paid off — he won an important comedy contest during his residency at a New Orleans hospital. His medical experience actually helped him land his breakout role as Dr. Kuni in 2007's Knocked Up. Around the time the movie premiered, he decided to pursue entertainment full-time. It's been reported that Jason Momoa won Hawaii's Model of the Year contest in 1999, but he actually "made that shit up." He told Square Mile, "When I was in Hawaii, I went to a casting call for Baywatch Hawaii – it was basically like a cattle call for 1,300 people. I got there, and seven hours later, when I finally got to the front of the line, they said, 'Oh, you've got to have a resume.' I was like, 'Oh yeah, well, I don't have one.' They were like, 'Dude, have you ever acted?' I was like, 'No,' and they were like, 'Have you modeled?' I was like, 'Yeah, yeah, I'm a big model. I do Gucci and Louis Vuitton." He continued, "And I'm looking at my friend, and I'm like, 'You did Prada, right?' And he's like, 'Yeah, yeah, we did that in Japan.' So we were just kind of making it up on the we just kind of bullshitted our way in, and then I met some managers down there; they kind of made up some stuff for me, like, 'Hawaii Model of the Year'. We basically just did head shots of me and said, 'Hey he's the model of the year.' We just made it it kind of stayed on there. It's like, when I finished Baywatch, all I had was Baywatch, and you've got to have something more credible. So we just left it on." Lana Condor made a "no dating each other" pact with her To All the Boys I've Loved Before costar Noah Centineo. She told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, "We had just got back from a hot yoga class, and we went to his apartment and we ordered pizza. And it's kinda like, 'Oh, hot yoga, pizza, what's happening?' It was right before we shot the movie — just getting to know each other. And I felt something...I said, 'Noah, it's not going to happen between us.' Because I felt that, for the show to do well, we had to be best friend kind of did what we did in To All The Boys, the movie. We made a contract and set boundaries. I'm so happy that we did that, because the movie turned out great." In The Acolyte, Manny Jacinto's secondary role, The Stranger, was originally meant to be significantly smaller. Showrunner Leslye Headland told Inverse, "This is an interesting tidbit: Originally, even up until shooting, The Stranger was not in a lot of the rest of the season. He was much more of a tee-up for a second season arc. But I saw Manny's screen test early on in pre-production, and I just thought, 'There will be riots in the streets if I don't [go further]. Here we go. I guess I'm rewriting an episode.' Manny was so impressive in every aspect." Taika Waititi's legal name is actually Taika Cohen. Cohen is his mother's last name, and Waiti is his father's. He told Cultural Daily, "It's really because — both my parents are in the arts. My mother is a writer and a schoolteacher; my father is a painter. Growing up I was doing a lot of acting and stuff. And because Cohen is on my passport, I would use Cohen through school, and I was known as Taika Cohen. And then, when I went to live with my dad on that side of the family, I was known as Waititi. So I always used both names throughout my life according to where I was living." "As a painter, I often felt like that was more the Waititi side of myself; I would be Taika Waititi as the painter. And then, because I made my first short film in that area where I was known as Waititi, that was the name that was put on the film. And that film did really well and suddenly I had a career as a filmmaker, and now everyone knows me as Waititi. It's not like I'm running away from Cohen or anything, it just happened. And I'm still Taika Cohen on all my of legal documents," he said. Simone Ashley is a self-taught amateur tattoo artist. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she said, "I've tattooed myself. I've tattooed castmates I've worked with before." So, the roles were completely reversed. I remember Jackie texting me and saying, 'Congratulations! You know your boys came to see me first. I'm like, 'Thank you, bro, you did me a huge favor.'" When Jackie Chan was a kid, his parents fled to Hong Kong, abandoning him and his siblings in mainland China. Through research for the documentary Traces of a Dragon: Jackie Chan and His Lost Family, he discovered that his dad had been a gang leader and Nationalist spy, and his mom had been a well-known gambler, opium smuggler, and part of Shanghai's underworld. As part of the documentary, he got to meet his dad, who told him that he met his mom when he arrested her for drug smuggling. Jackie also learned of his two half-brothers and two half-sisters. Unlike her The Suite Life of Zack and Cody character, Brenda Song is super smart in real life — in fact, she got into Harvard at only 15! However, she turned it down to take the role of London Tipton. She told W Magazine, "My mom got breast cancer for the first time, I booked Suite Life, and I was accepted into the college I'd always wanted to go to. My dad, who's a schoolteacher, sat me down and said, 'Here's the thing. You have an amazing opportunity if acting is what you want to do. Education is the most important thing. You go to college to figure out what you want to do, but if this is what you want to do, you have an opportunity to do it." On The Ellen Show, Simu Liu shared that, long before he was cast as the lead in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, his first job involved dressing up as another Marvel hero — Spider-Man! He followed the legacy of his father and grandfather, who also held the chief title. I don't really feel adequate, to be honest, but I doubt myself in almost everything that I do." Saweetie has a famous cousin — Gabrielle Union! Saweetie told Us Weekly, "Honestly, I didn't really connect with her until I was older, but I have to say, when I was a young girl, I would be so shy around her because she's always been so beautiful. She told Dazed, "I've loved them since I was a kid. When I was a kid, I used to collect them, and then I would go to my classmates and be like, 'Do you wanna hear a ghost story?' And they'd be like, 'No.' The one that scared me the most was 'Toire no Hanako-san,' which is — Hanko is a Japanese girl's name, and it's just about the girl in the toilet. Such a location challenged him to do a lot of creative problem solving, such as occasionally using GoPros and his cellphone to film. He also attached a camera to a rope to swing it over a crowd. On the day he used the rope, a studio exec was visiting set, so Dev tasked Jomon Thomas, his producing partner, with distracting him. She was also Margot Robbie's skating coach for I, Tonya. Hayley's dad, Jamie Alcroft, is an actor/comedian who was one-half of the comedy duo Mack & Jamie. He's also known for his voice acting works in video games, TV, and movies. On Call Her Daddy, Zayn Malik said he has "a lot of animals" — three turtles, six chickens, three cats, and three dogs. He also said that he adopted the first chickens he had to rescue them from being slaughtered. When Barbie made Fifth Harmony dolls, Dinah Jane's doll was the first modern Polynesian Barbie. On the Real Gems With Erin Ashley Simon podcast, she said, "All my first cousins, all my girl cousins, were like, 'Oh my gosh, I have a Dinah Jane Barbie. I wanna be Dinah!' CBS News Refutes Bill Belichick's Claims About Awkward Interview Alongside Girlfriend Jordon Hudson
CBS News refutes Bill Belichick's claims that there were agreed-upon limitations before they interviewed him about his new book, The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football. Belichick, 73, sat for an interview with Tony Dokoupil that aired on Sunday, April 27, during CBS Sunday Morning. The edited segment included an awkward moment when Belichick's girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, shut down the interview when the journalist asked the new UNC-Chapel Hill head football coach how he met the 24-year-old. In his first public comments on the situation, Belichick said he 'clearly communicated' with his publicist at Simon & Schuster, The Art of Winning's publisher, that 'any promotional interviews I participated in would agree to focus solely on the contents of the book.' 'Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview. I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book," Belichick's statement, sent via email by the University of North Carolina on Wednesday, continued. "After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion." 'When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview,' the network said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. 'There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.' In the segment that aired, Dokoupil asked Belichick how he met Hudson. After she stopped the interview, Dokoupil said in a voiceover, 'It's a topic neither one of them is comfortable commenting on.' The journalist also said Hudson was a 'constant presence' during the conversation. Dokoupil also asked Belichick what he thought of the interest his relationship with Hudson has attracted. "I've never been too worried about what everyone else thinks,' Belichick replied, adding that he tries 'to do what I feel like is best for me, and what's right.' The scene sparked speculation about the nature of Belichick and Hudson's relationship and how they met. In his statement, Belichick defended her, saying she was 'simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track.' 'Some of the clips make it appear as though we were avoiding the question of how we met, but we have been open about the fact that Jordon and I met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021,' Belichick said, adding that the final segment that aired 'does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career.' "Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true,' the former New England Patriots coach wrote. Footage from the interview showed Hudson sitting just off camera and watching while Belichick was being interviewed. UNC-Chapel Hill's top academic official stepping down after three years in the role
UNC-Chapel Hill's top academic official is stepping down from his leadership position after three years in the role, Chancellor Lee Roberts announced Thursday, marking one of the most notable changes in the university's administration since Roberts took office last year. Chris Clemens has served as the university's provost and chief academic officer since February 2022. A member of the UNC faculty since 1998, Clemens has also served as chair of the physics and astronomy department and in two separate senior associate dean roles in his more than 25 years at the university. He will return to his role as a distinguished professor of physics and astronomy after concluding his duties as provost on May 16. 'An astrophysicist to the core, I know Chris is excited to return to our faculty,' Roberts wrote in announcing the change. 'He is an invaluable adviser and friend to me, and I look forward to his continued excellence in teaching, research and leadership.' Clemens encountered his share of controversy in his role — beginning from the very moment he was hired. The UNC Board of Trustees approved Clemens to be provost under the recommendation of former Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, who is now the president of Michigan State University. The process used to search for a provost and ultimately approve Clemens' hiring raised several questions from media and others. Then-Faculty Chair Mimi Chapman criticized the process for a lack of transparency and alleged that university trustees and UNC System leaders had put 'significant pressure' on Guskiewicz 'to make a particular choice.' Then, when the trustees voted to approve Clemens' hiring, their procedure raised additional questions about whether the vote had violated state law on open meetings, as reported by The News & Observer at the time. Those questions forced the board to vote on the matter again in a later meeting 'to immediately end any further attempts to challenge the validity' of Clemens' hiring, The N&O reported. Shortly after taking office as provost, Clemens described his role in a university interview as being the 'advocate-in-chief' for the university's faculty. Among the many positions he has held at the university, Clemens has perhaps become most known for his roles in helping to develop the Program for Public Discourse and the School of Civic Life and Leadership — separate, but similar, university efforts that are generally intended to foster civil dialogue and debate on campus, but that have been criticized for their perceived conservative leanings and influences. Clemens was involved with the development of the Program for Public Discourse as early as 2017, when he wrote to Robert George, a prominent conservative law professor at Princeton University, seeking George's input on the program that was then in its infancy. In his emails to George, Clemens described himself as 'among the most outspoken conservative members' of the UNC faculty, noting that he had been a sponsor of the College Republicans and the Carolina Review, a conservative student publication. Clemens served as the interim faculty director during the program's inaugural year, from 2019 to 2020. Years later, as provost, he developed a budget proposal for the School of Civic Life and Leadership, which sparked controversy when the university's Board of Trustees directed administrators to 'accelerate' their development of the school in a 2023 resolution. The stated purpose of the school, which began offering classes last fall, is 'to encourage thoughtful engagement with democracy and civility through a variety of disciplines.' But Dave Boliek, who served as the Board of Trustees chair when the school was introduced and now is the state auditor, said in a Fox News interview that the school would 'remedy' the university's shortage of 'right-of-center views.' In recent months, as the school has begun operating in earnest, it has been the source of more controversy. Multiple news reports, including in the Daily Tar Heel and Inside Higher Ed, have detailed a disconnect between the school's leadership and its faculty, as well as a now-'narrowed' focus of courses compared to the school's broad mission. Most of the school's inaugural faculty have resigned over such issues, the Daily Tar Heel reported. In January, Inside Higher Ed reported, Clemens ordered the school's dean, Jed Atkins, to halt ongoing searches for faculty, citing financial limitations. But Clemens quickly reversed course after Roberts 'committed sufficient funds,' the outlet reported. Thursday's announcement of Clemens' departure as provost marks the latest in a string of recent changes in Roberts' administration. The university's top lawyer, Charles Marshall, left the university in January to return to the private sector. Last week, Roberts announced that former state Sen. Paul Newton, the Republican majority leader who had resigned from the Senate just days earlier, would be the university's next general counsel and vice chancellor, beginning April 21. Also last week, Roberts announced that he was eliminating the role of vice chancellor for human resources, most recently held by Becci Menghini, as part of larger 'organizational changes' to the university's HR and Equal Opportunity and Compliance offices. Roberts announced at a January Board of Trustees meeting that Vice Chancellor for Communications Kamrhan Farwell would be departing the university after nearly three years in the role. Farwell remains on staff as university officials continue to search for her replacement, with additional search committee meetings scheduled in the coming weeks. Previously, George Battle, vice chancellor for institutional integrity and risk management, left the university last summer. As part of that change, Roberts announced the division would be reorganized into other campus departments. Roberts was named the university's 13th chancellor last summer after serving in the role on an interim basis for several months. A career finance executive and former member of the UNC System Board of Governors, he resigned from that board in order to become chancellor. Jim Dean, who previously served as UNC's provost from 2013 to 2017 before serving as president of the University of New Hampshire from 2018 to 2024, will return to Chapel Hill on May 17 to serve as interim provost. 'Few others can bring the wisdom and deep expertise from over 40 years both in higher education and at Carolina that he does,' Roberts wrote of Dean. The university will conduct a national search to fill the role.

Vaccine and COVID research, LGBTQ studies among NC projects hit by NIH cuts
Nearly two dozen grants and millions in research dollars have been canceled at UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and other North Carolina institutions as part of the growing list of projects cut by the National Institutes of Health. Since February, the Trump administration has taken the unprecedented step of canceling hundreds of active research grants at many of the country's top health and medical institutions. The national list of cuts to NIH has grown to 638 canceled grants, including 20 at North Carolina colleges and institutions. Another 700 grants have been cut by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The cuts follow a pledge President Donald Trump made in a February memo called 'Radical Transparency About Wasteful Spending'. 'The American people have seen their tax dollars used to fund the passion projects of unelected bureaucrats rather than to advance the national interest,' Trump said in the memo. Joining UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke among those impacted are UNC Charlotte, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Research Triangle Institute. The canceled grants largely focused on COVID-related research, gender, minority groups, climate research and overseas communities, topics the Trump administration has been critical of since returning to power. In all, the cuts total billions of dollars in federal funding for medical research. UNC-Chapel Hill saw the highest number of grant cuts in the state, with funding canceled for 11 projects. Among those, funding dollars ranged from $40,441 for a study of addiction within the adolescent LGBTQ+ community, to $65 million for an effort to develop new oral antiviral drugs. Each of the canceled grants at UNC-Chapel Hill focused on either COVID response, gender identity or minority topics. The same was true for Duke's canceled grants, with the largest, a $176 million project, studying the potential effectiveness of six different drugs on treating COVID. Included in that study was the effectiveness of Ivermectin against COVID-19. Other Duke grants ranged from $116.6 million for COVID testing research and $28 million for general coronavirus vaccine development to $42,014 for a study of sexual health among of Black gay men. To systematically end active awards is a departure for NIH, the world's biggest public funder of biomedical research. In past years, the agency had canceled on average around 20 of its approximately 60,000 annual grants early for obvious fraud or potential harms. 'Terminating funding has previously been an uncommon action,' said Cat Long, research communications manager at UNC-Chapel Hill. This past week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced it would be scaling back COVID-related funding, canceling more than $11 billion in funding to states. In North Carolina, that means the department of health and human services will lose around $115.5 million in remaining funding. The department said this past week it anticipated cutting more than 80 jobs. The funds were part of an $800 million package of COVID funding. At RTI, two grants were canceled, totaling $250,000. One was intended to study the 'Social influences on sexual health among Latinx adolescents and emerging adults who identify as LGBTQ+ in an agricultural community.' The other canceled RTI grant aimed to improve health regulations in Nigeria. Given North Carolina's stature as a national leader in research and public health, funding cuts have hit hard. At RTI, which is also affected by cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development, there have been two rounds of layoffs since Trump returned to office. Combined, Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill accounted for more than half of the nearly $2 billion in NIH funding North Carolina received in 2024. Driven by these two Research Triangle institutions, North Carolina saw the sixth-most NIH dollars of any state, outpacing its population ranking (No. 9). Beyond specific grant cuts, other changes at NIH mean universities can expect even less funding. The NIH has put a cap on 'indirect grant payments' at 15%, funding that typically covers facility and administrative costs. In anticipation of these funding cuts, Duke implemented a hiring freeze earlier this month.
