Farmers Across Five Provinces: Get Ready for Cleanfarms' Fall Unwanted Agricultural Pesticides & Obsolete Livestock and Equine Medication Collection

ETOBICOKE, Ontario, July 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Again this fall, farmers in five provinces will be able to safely dispose of unwanted agricultural pesticides and obsolete livestock and equine medications (UPLM) through Cleanfarms' collection program. The UPLM program is one of Cleanfarms' longest-standing programs, having helped farmers protect their land and communities by ensuring unused or expired pesticides and medication are managed safely for over 15 years. An important milestone this year, UPLM collection events in Newfoundland will also feature the first-ever collection of used pesticide and fertilizer containers (under 23L), providing a new convenience for Newfoundland farmers. 2025 UPLM collection events: Accepted materials include: The program does NOT accept: 'Farmers continue to show their commitment to protecting the environment by taking part in the UPLM collection program year after year,' said Barry Friesen, Executive Director of Cleanfarms. 'It's a reliable solution to safely manage materials that accumulate over time, and it gives peace of mind knowing they're handled with care.' The program is funded by Cleanfarms' crop protection industry members and the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI). 'CAHI members take great pride in our long-standing partnership with Cleanfarms. This important program highlights our members' unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. Ensuring that unwanted or expired livestock medications are safely collected and disposed of protects animal health, supports on-farm biosecurity, and helps safeguard our environment,' said Dr. Catherine Filejski, President & CEO of the Canadian Animal Health Institute. In 2022, when Cleanfarms last ran collection events in these regions, the program recovered 323,524 kg of unwanted pesticides and 9,656 kg of obsolete livestock and equine medications. Cleanfarms to Launch Recycling Program for Pesticide and Fertilizer Containers in Newfoundland

ETOBICOKE, Ontario, July 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — New this year, Newfoundland farmers can bring their empty pesticide and fertilizer containers 23L and under to Cleanfarms collection events to be recycled. This update will provide Newfoundland farmers the opportunity to manage these containers responsibly and keep them out of landfills and the environment. In Newfoundland, triple-rinsed and bagged containers 23L and under will be accepted at collection events for the Unwanted Pesticides and Old Livestock Medications (UPLM) program happening this October. Farmers can obtain free collection bags from their local Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Pest Management Specialist. Collection events for containers 23L and under and unwanted pesticides and livestock medications will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Depots in: Foxtrap, October 21 Lethbridge, October 22 Lewisporte, October 23 Deer Lake, October 24 'Bringing this program to Newfoundland has been a long-standing goal of ours, and we're thrilled to be adding it to our suite of collection programs during our 15th anniversary year,' says Barry Friesen, Cleanfarms' Executive Director. 'Every three years, farmers on the island have welcomed collection events for unwanted pesticides and livestock medications to safely dispose of their unused products. We're confident they'll do the same for this new avenue to embrace sustainable agriculture.' Cleanfarms works closely with experts on the island from the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture to bring recycling opportunities to local farmers. These Pest Management Specialists are big contributors to the success of the UPLM program and have been integral to launching the program for containers 23L and under this year. 'Many farmers have been storing their empty containers in search of an alternative to landfilling them,' says Leah Madore, Pest Management Specialist. 'Knowing they'll now be able to return these containers to be recycled into new useful products makes us proud to be part of this exciting project.' More information about the collection program for pesticide and fertilizer containers 23L and under is available at including what materials are accepted and how to prepare them. Cleanfarms Launches New Pilot Program to Help Fraser Valley Farmers Recycle Ag Plastics

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta, May 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cleanfarms, in collaboration with the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) and the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is launching a five-year pilot program (2025-2029) to support farmers in the Fraser Valley in recycling bale wrap and silage plastics. This pilot builds on experience from pilots in Northern BC and expands on the work of farmers in Agassiz who have been recycling plastics for several years, recently with expertise and logistical support from Cleanfarms and financial support from the Dairy Farmers of Canada. It aims to reduce ag plastic waste while improving on-farm recycling efficiency. Leveraging experience in preparation and collection of agricultural plastics for recycling, Cleanfarms is launching this pilot to develop sustainable long-term solutions relevant to BC agriculture. As BC's largest dairy region, the Fraser Valley pilot will provide valuable learnings to inform programming for farmers across the province. 'With upwards of $188,000 in funding, this investment aims to reduce on-farm plastic waste and lay the groundwork for a province-wide agricultural plastics recycling program. It's a crucial step toward a more sustainable and circular agricultural sector in BC.' said Jake Turek, Waste Management Engineer, British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture and Food. 'The FVRD is proud to be involved in the new five-year pilot program of collecting and recycling used agricultural plastic,' said Patricia Ross, FVRD Board Chair. 'The collaboration with Cleanfarms is creating an opportunity with practical solutions to help farmers reduce their environmental footprint in the region,' she said. Cleanfarms will host a demonstration day in Agassiz on June 17th, 2025, where farmers can test different compactors and learn about how to participate in this pilot project. Farmers will store baled plastics on their farms, and drop-off events will be held twice per year. Additional details are available on our BC pilot web page. 'Pilot projects like this allow us to test and refine programs, making it easier to establish permanent recycling solutions,' said Barry Friesen, Executive Director. Furthermore, farmers can recycle other ag plastics through Cleanfarms' existing collection programs for used ag plastic containers, totes, drums, and Unwanted Pesticides & Livestock Medications (UPLM) which has its next collection in BC's Peace Region in 2025. For more information on how to participate in this pilot, visit our BC Pilot webpage, or contact Carly Fraser at [email protected].
