UPWA observes Int'l Labour Day with awareness programme

Tribune News Network Doha On the occasion of International Labour Day, the Uttar Pradesh Welfare Association (UPWA) hosted a commemorative event on May 1, at Old Indian Ideal School in Doha. The event honoured labourers from the construction industry and offered them guidance on best practices and labour regulations in Qatar. Harish Panday, first secretary for culture and education at the Indian Embassy in Qatar, was the chief guest, while Khalid Abdul Rahman (Ministry of Labour), Obaid Tahir, and Subramanya Hebbagelu were the guests of honour. More than 150 people, including families and labourers, attended the function. Asif Khan, vice president of UPWA, welcomed all attendees, while Obaid Tahir and Subramanya offered insights on raising awareness of labour laws. The audience was captivated by Panday's inspiring speech, in which he shared his personal life experiences and emphasised the need for more such awareness initiatives for workers. Khalid reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to providing all necessary support to the community. Ziauddin Ahmed, president of UPWA, highlighted the importance of incorporating sports into people's busy lives and expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries. The event was hosted by RJ Nazia from FM 107. As part of the celebration, a friendly cricket match was held between UPWA-B and UPWA-C teams. Mussaraf Ghani Khan and Kashif Habib introduced the players to Khalid. The toss was won by Abdul Mohamim of UPWA-C, who elected to bat first. UPWA-C posted a total of 146 runs in the allotted 16 overs, setting a target of 147. UPWA-B managed 105 runs, resulting in a 41-run victory for UPWA-C. The programme concluded with the distribution of food packets to all the labourers in attendance.
