On the occasion of International Labour Day, the Uttar Pradesh Welfare Association (UPWA) hosted a commemorative event on May 1, at Old Indian Ideal School in Doha. The event honoured labourers from the construction industry and offered them guidance on best practices and labour regulations in Qatar.
Harish Panday, first secretary for culture and education at the Indian Embassy in Qatar, was the chief guest, while Khalid Abdul Rahman (Ministry of Labour), Obaid Tahir, and Subramanya Hebbagelu were the guests of honour.
More than 150 people, including families and labourers, attended the function. Asif Khan, vice president of UPWA, welcomed all attendees, while Obaid Tahir and Subramanya offered insights on raising awareness of labour laws.
The audience was captivated by Panday's inspiring speech, in which he shared his personal life experiences and emphasised the need for more such awareness initiatives for workers. Khalid reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to providing all necessary support to the community.
Ziauddin Ahmed, president of UPWA, highlighted the importance of incorporating sports into people's busy lives and expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries. The event was hosted by RJ Nazia from FM 107.
As part of the celebration, a friendly cricket match was held between UPWA-B and UPWA-C teams. Mussaraf Ghani Khan and Kashif Habib introduced the players to Khalid. The toss was won by Abdul Mohamim of UPWA-C, who elected to bat first. UPWA-C posted a total of 146 runs in the allotted 16 overs, setting a target of 147. UPWA-B managed 105 runs, resulting in a 41-run victory for UPWA-C.
The programme concluded with the distribution of food packets to all the labourers in attendance.

At least 11 killed in stampede outside cricket stadium in southern India

agencies Bengaluru At least 11 people have been killed and many more injured in a stampede outside a cricket stadium in the southern Indian state of Karnataka to celebrate the home team's victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the world's most popular Twenty20 cricket tournament. 'No one expected such a huge crowd,' India's chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, said on Wednesday.'The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came.' 'Eleven people have died and 33 others are injured,' he said. The incident took place earlier on Wednesday as thousands of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the state capital, Bengaluru. India's NDTV broadcaster also reported that at least 11 people died. Local TV news channels showed footage of police shifting the injured and those who fell unconscious to ambulances. DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, told reporters that 'the crowd was very uncontrollable'. The event was being held to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first IPL title win on Tuesday. Stampedes often happen in India when large crowds gather. In January, at least 30 people were killed as tens of thousands of Hindu devotees rushed to bathe in a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world's largest religious gathering.

Sri Lanka to host Pakistan matches at ICC Women's World Cup

Agencies London Sri Lanka will host matches at this year's Women's World Cup as part of ongoing arrangements surrounding fixtures involving India and Pakistan, reports India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the men's Champions Trophy earlier this year prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to introduce neutral venues to tournaments hosted by either nation. As part of the plans, announced in December, neither country will travel to the other for an ICC event. The Sri Lankan city of Colombo will join Indian cities Bengaluru, Guwahati, Indore and Visakhapatnam in staging the Women's World Cup, which runs from 30 September until 2 November. Colombo will host Pakistan's seven group games, including against India and England. It will also host a semi-final and the final if Pakistan make it that far. Bengaluru will stage the opening match, involving India, and the final if Pakistan are not involved. The full list of fixtures for the eight-team tournament is still to be announced. Australia are the defending World Cup champions, having beaten England in the final of the previous tournament in New Zealand, delayed until 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. One potential problem with the logistical switch could be the weather, with October one of the wetter months of the year in Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan were not playing each other outside of major tournaments even before the conflict between the two nations last month. The cricketing tension between the two countries escalated over the Champions Trophy. Even though Pakistan travelled to India for the men's 50-over World Cup in 2023, India did not make a reciprocal journey earlier this year. As part of the ICC arrangements, India played their matches in Dubai, going on to win the trophy after playing every fixture at the same venue. In May, amid cross-border military strikes between the two nations, both the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League were suspended before resuming. The delayed IPL final will be played on Tuesday. It remains to be seen whether the government of either country will allow their team to take part in a fixture against the other. It has also been announced the opening game of next year's Women's T20 World Cup in England will be played at Edgbaston on 12 June. The semi-finals have been confirmed for The Oval. The final will take place at Lord's on 5 July 2026.
