Trump pledges billions for new illegal immigration detention facility
The Trump administration has awarded a massive $US1.26 billion contract for an immigration centre in the US to be built in Texas.
The Department of Defence awarded the contract to Acquisition Logistics LLC, a Virginia-based company.
The centre is planned to be at Texas Army Base Fort Bliss as a tent city.
The move would vastly expand the Trump administration's ability to detain and deport migrants.
The 1-million-acre base will have 5,000 beds and an airport, creating a deportation hub.
This would make the Texas base the largest immigration detention facility in the country.
The contract was awarded following the passage of Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', which allocated $US45 billion to expand the capacity of detention facilities.
The enormous spending increase hopes to double ICE's detention capacity to 100,000 to meet Trump's goal of 1 million deportations per year.
