After a week where the Tigers stayed at No. 11, Auburn has moved up three spots in the latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll. Auburn jumped to No. 8 in the rankings after a weekend series win over Tennessee and a 3-0 victory against Samford. The Volunteers dropped six spots, going from No. 6 to No. 12. The Tigers are now 33-15 on the season and 13-11 in the SEC. Their series win over the weekend was the eighth of the season for Auburn. The week started with a Tuesday night victory against the Samford Bulldogs. In the 3-0 win, the Tigers were led by a great pitching performance by Christian Chatterton. The freshman pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 batters for Samford. He gave way to Andrea Alvarez, who pitched two innings and struck out three batters. Ryan Hetzler picked up the save for his first of the season. Auburn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Cade Belyeu hit a two-run home run. Auburn outscored Tennessee in their weekend series 18-7 and took two of three games. Due to the weather, the series had plenty of stops and starts. Auburn took game one 6-1. Ike Irish hit a two-run home run in the first inning and hit an RBI single in the third to give Auburn a 3-0 advantage. Chris Rembert hit a home run in the eighth to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead. Pitcher Samuel Dutton won his sixth game of the year after pitching over six innings. He struck out eight batters in the opening game. Auburn announces pitching rotation for Texas series
Auburn announces pitching rotation for Texas series Here's who Butch Thompson is sending to the bump for this weekend's crucial SEC series with the Texas Longhorns The Auburn Tigers are riding a six-game winning streak as they prepare to travel to take on No. 1 Texas for a weekend series beginning on Thursday night. The Tigers moved up in the USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll and are currently ranked No. 9. So, it will be a huge top-ten matchup between these two teams. The Longhorns currently sit at the top of the SEC with a 13-2 conference record and are 30-5 overall. For Auburn, they are sixth in the conference with a 9-6 record and 27-10 overall. As with any big baseball series, pitching could decide the outcome. Head coach Butch Thompson threw out the combination of Samuel Dutton, Cade Fisher, and Andreas Alvarez last weekend at home against LSU, which resulted in a clean sweep of the No. 3 Bayou Bengals. Thompson feels that Texas is the most sound team that his squad has faced this season, meaning that three days of strong pitching will be needed in order to escape Austin with a series win. Here is how Auburn will look on the bump this weekend at No. 1 Texas. Game one: Samuel Dutton (Thursday) When the series opens on Thursday the Tigers will be placing Samuel Dutton on the mound. It has been commonplace for Dutton to be the game one starter in these weekend series. Dutton is 5-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.34. He is 4-1 in SEC play with his lone loss coming against Georgia. Last week in game one versus LSU, Dutton pitched six innings allowing zero runs and struck out seven batters in the Tigers 8-4 win. He is ninth in the SEC with 58 strikeouts on the season. Game two: Cade Fisher (Friday) Cade Fisher picked up his first win of the season on Saturday in game two versus LSU. In the 4-2 win, Fisher pitched five innings and gave up one run with three hits. In the win, he struck out six of the 23 batters he faced in the game. This season he has a 3.91 ERA, and 31 strikeouts. Auburn will need another performance like he had against LSU to defeat the Longhorns. Game three: Andreas Alvarez (Saturday) Freshman Andreas Alvarez was the starter in game three versus LSU on Sunday. It was his fifth start of the season, but he did not get the decision in the 3-2 victory. He pitched four innings before being relieved by Griffin Graves who got his third win of the season. For Alvarez, he did not have any strikeouts but only allowed two hits while on the mound. He walked three batters. He will need to have control of his pitches against the Longhorns in what could be a series deciding game on Saturday. Auburn cracks top-10 of latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll after sweeping LSU
Auburn cracks top-10 of latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll after sweeping LSU Auburn's weekend sweep of LSU pushes them higher in the rankings. Coming off a week where the Auburn rallied to defeat Georgia Tech, and a weekend sweep of LSU, the Tigers are moving up in the polls once again. Auburn has moved up three spots in the latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll. They go from No. 12 to No. 9 in the newest rankings released on Monday. Auburn now has an overall record of 26-10, and they hold a 9-6 record in SEC competition. The week began with the Tigers earning a 9-8 road win over Georgia Tech. Auburn possessed a 5-1 lead before Georgia Tech scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Auburn would then score three runs in the eighth to take a 9-7 lead after Deric Fabien scored on a Bub Terrell single. Georgia Tech would add one run in the ninth but could not get any closer. Then, Auburn headed back home from a big weekend series with No. 3 LSU. The Tigers from Baton Rouge entered the series with only three losses on the season. The Auburn Tigers doubled that number in the loss column. Auburn won game one 8-4 with a great performance from pitcher Samuel Dutton. He picked up his fifth win of the season by pitching six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Cade Fisher picked up his first win of the season, and Auburn used two runs in the fourth to get a 4-2 win in game two. Fisher pitched five innings and allowed just one run. He also struck out six batters while on the mound. Auburn trailed 1-0 as the fourth inning began. Eric Snow scored after a Ike Irish double to tie the game at one. Then, Irish would score when Cooper McMurray hit a double to center field to give Auburn a 2-1 lead. Snow hit a two-run home run in the fifth to give Auburn a 4-1 lead. On Sunday, Auburn held on for a 3-2 win after scoring three early runs. It was McMurray once again delivering the offense. In the first inning, he hit a double to left field that would score both Irish and Chris Rembert. Bristol Carter added the third run in the second for a 3-0 lead. LSU scored two runs in the eighth, but Auburn held on for the win. The sweep resulted in LSU dropping to No. 7. Auburn will have another big weekend series this week when they travel to meet the new No. 1 Texas Longhorns. First though, they will need to focus on Jacksonville State Tuesday night. Other teams in the SEC in the USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll are Arkansas (No.2), Tennessee (No.3), Georgia (No.5), Ole Miss (No.11), Alabama (No.15), Oklahoma (No.16), and Vanderbilt (No. 17).
