National lifeguard championships roll into Huntington Beach

The United States Lifesaving Assn. National Lifeguard Championships have returned to Huntington State Beach for the first time since 2010. Surf City, in turn, was pumping out sizable waves Thursday, almost like an invitation or challenge to those visiting from around the country, depending on perspective. 'The conditions are pretty rough,' said Skip Prosser, USLA scoring director and a lifeguard in nearby Long Beach. 'I mean, the waves are probably 5 to 6 foot … There were a lot of wide open eyes and jaws dropping from the East Coast people. They're not used to this at all.' Still, the show has gone on at the competition, which is taking place on the beach between Beach Boulevard and Newland Street. First came the National Junior Lifeguard Championships on Wednesday, which had about 300 young competitors in a variety of races and skills. The National Lifeguard Championships, which Prosser said has 450 to 500 competitors, started Thursday and continues through Sunday. Bailey Noel of Delaware, attending the national competition with Sussex County Lifesaving, took first place in his men's surf race heat on Thursday morning. 'This surf is a little bit bigger, for sure, than what we're used to in Delaware,' said Noel, 38. 'But we all love the sport of surf lifesaving, and we train all year. This is just a little bit of fun. 'It does put things into perspective. If a person is out there and they need help, we have to be ready at a moment's notice, just go out there and help them. But we train for it all year, so we're ready.' Due to the conditions, the surfboat races were postponed a day — 'In the interest of safety, the officials said no,' Prosser said. Montana George, a lifeguard at Huntington State Beach, said she was looking forward to competing at what amounted to a home meet. The 22-year-old from Carson is representing the California State Lifeguard Assn., which has a sizable presence with more than 80 competitors at nationals. 'From what I was told from some of the older guys, we've never had surf this big at nationals before,' said George, who is competing in her third national championships and also competed in the Lifesaving World Championships in Australia last year. 'Having it at Huntington just makes everyone excited, I think … It's been a big summer in Huntington, but last week we had like half-a-foot waves. As much as I've had the advantage of being here all summer, training last week I had no surf to train in. It's super fun to see how fast the conditions can change. I think today or [Friday] is going to be the biggest day, and it's going to be a little bit smaller on Saturday.' The national championships will continue with beach course races on the sand, as well as water course and boat and ski course events. Prosser said the event was a culmination of all of the work the lifeguards have already put into prior competitions, as well as keeping in shape for their jobs on the beach. 'It's good, it's a time to see old friends,' he said. 'Every year I get to see people that I don't see for a year, I don't talk to for a year. I have people from my own chapter that are meeting friends here, and they're going to team up on events that you can team up. It's just the camaraderie … There's a lot of friendships that go back a long, long time.'

South Haven city leaders look for help in lifeguard rollout

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — Lifeguards may not be on South Haven beaches until 2026. The city council voted to seek a project management proposal to design the program for a potential rollout. Earlier this year, a consultant report drafted what a lifeguard program would look like. It's a program that would come with a price tag of more than $619,000 during its first year. Now, the council is looking to find a group that can draft a program tailored for the lakeshore community. City staff said they have already reached out to a firm called Double Haul Solutions for a proposal on helping with the rollout. South Haven city council looks for more info ahead of lifeguard plan The from Monday's city council meeting said if the council decides South Haven does needs a lifeguard program, it needs to agree on a way to pay for it and come up with a detailed plan. But making the program happen will require a lot of full-time work, including building support systems and hire lifeguards. However, the program would need to be integrated with the police department, public works department and human resources, where staff changes are already happening. 'A safe, effective USLA-complaint program cannot be rolled out this summer,' read the document. 'A safe, effective, USLA compliant lifeguard program can be rolled out for Memorial Day weekend 2026 with a project manager hired to design and implement a plan.' South Haven city staff requested that Double Haul Solutions be part of the designing and implementation processes for the lifeguard program. '(Double Haul Solutions) are not capable of putting an effective program in place for 2025. Given the scale, public interest, and public safety aspect, 'right not rushed' is the only approach that makes sense,' the motion read. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Paid parking set to begin at beach accesses in Emerald Isle

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) — From Apr. 13 until Sept. 15, 2025, people will have to pay by the hour to park at the West or East beach accesses in Emerald Isle. This signifies the beginning of the tourist season in the area, accompanying Spring Break. While this may upset some people visiting the town, the money goes toward things such as maintaining the beach access bathrooms and showers, keeping the parking lots safe and staffing lifeguards. 'The money that we receive from the paid parking actually offsets the cost of the Eastern and Western access,' Director or Parks and Recreation for Emerald Isle Candace Dooley said. 'So, surprisingly, with 20 lifeguards on staff all summer, seven per day, and then we ramp up during holidays and busy times as well, and have more guards on duty with five roving the entire beach. You can see them behind me most likely and so, it offsets the cost to have this USLA certified lifeguards on staff, and that is a very prestigious title to carry.' In conjunction with paid parking beginning, the beaches will start to see more visitors throughout the fall. 'It's time to ramp up for the busy season, and so we are fully stocked and ready to go,' Dooley said. 'Staff is coming on slow but sure, as we get into the busy season, but I can tell you they're already here. Spring Break is in full swing. We welcome them. We hope that everybody has a safe and enjoyable time here at the beach. It's also a reminder for Emerald Isle locals that they do have access to free parking passes for Spring and Summer parking season. 'You will get a ticket if you do not pay for the parking when you enter in. But, residents do get free passes, so be sure and go to the police department and get your free pass,' Dooley said. 'If you are a taxpayer here on Emerald Isle, you are entitled to that.' According to the town's website, parking is $4 per hour, with the maximum paid per day being $16. It will run seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
