Internet coverage reaches 98.82% in populated areas
Fahmi: 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7%.' — Bernama INTERNET and communication coverage in populated areas across Malaysia has reached 98.82% as of July 31, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4% coverage in populated areas. 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7%,' he told Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang). Dr Zulkafperi wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency. Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, Internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75%, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99%, reported Bernama. Additionally, he said that the second 5G network by UMobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage. On the Jendela 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for Jendela 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). He said the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures. 'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he said.

Jendela Phase 1 completion targeted by end of the year, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) Phase 1 is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, the Dewan Rakyat heard today. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the plans for Jendela Phase 2, meanwhile, are being reviewed and will be announced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in the fourth quarter of 2025. "This requires assessment and consideration of appropriate fit-for-purpose service delivery methods, as well as the capacity of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the capital and operational expenditure of the project. The list of project locations is currently being identified. "The types of service delivery solutions under consideration at this planning stage are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of internet services using satellite technology," he said during question and answer session in Dewan Rakyat today. Fahmi was responding to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang) who enquired about the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas. Fahmi added that internet and communications coverage in populated areas in Malaysia stood at 98.82 per cent as of July 31. In terms of 5G coverage, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has completed a total of 7,489 5G transmitter sites, providing 82.4 per cent 5G coverage in populated areas nationwide. "Meanwhile, the number of subscriptions has exceeded 28 million, with the 5G mobile broadband penetration rate per 100 residents at 82.7 per cent. "The government, through the MCMC remains committed to supporting the aspiration to bridge the digital divide and expand internet coverage, including 5G services nationwide, particularly in rural areas," he said. Regarding the rollout of the second 5G network, Fahmi said the rollout operated by U Mobile, commenced operations on July 14 with a total of 1,232 sites upgraded to 5G coverage.
