MIKEY SMITH: I was on Donald Trump's golf course as he was nearly overshadowed by a wasp
Almost nothing could breach the insane security operation set up around the US President's golf trip to Scotland - but flying insects don't tend to obey no-fly zones The grand opening of Donald Trump's new Scottish golf course was very nearly overshadowed by a wasp. I've been following the US President around for the last four days - and the level of protection he's been given by the British state has been nothing short of extraordinary. Thousands of police officers were supplied, some of them shipped in from elsewhere in the UK, at enormous cost to the British taxpayer, to ensure he could play golf in private. Scottish police provided an exclusion zone around both of his courses that banned vehicles, pedestrians for miles from the gates - and even prohibited planes and drones from flying overhead. Unfortunately for Trump, flying insects care not a bit about no-fly zones. Today, he was warming up on the driving range of Trump International Links Aberdeen, while invited guests, politicians and golfing legends waited for him to cut the ribbon on the new course he's had built. But as he approached the tee, he began to jerk and wriggle, wafting his hands around his head in an erratic fashion. Some of those observing him assumed he was just dancing. Perhaps to the music his team occasionally plays to shield him from shouted questions. Maybe just to the music in his head. But no. His the source of his irritation, surely to be added to his incredibly long enemies list upon which he will surely have his revenge, was a simple Scottish wasp. It's probably the closest I've come to identifying with him. Wasps are evil and should all be exterminated. Today's brief excursion onto Trump's second Scottish property was the closest most of the media came to the President whose visit has cost so much. And even then, aside from a select few granted access to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, most reporters were held in a large tent with blacked out windows as he practiced his swing just a few metres away. Eric Trump, introducing his dad, did his very best Alan Partridge impersonation while describing the new course. "We had an unlimited budget," he said. "And we exceeded it. This is his Mona Lisa." Trump, free of his insect attacker, said a few words before teeing off on the course proper - some of them nice ones about Keir Starmer and John Swinney. And he said - shock horror - thanked the media, who he said were not "fake" this time around, but had been nice. And in a tent with blacked out windows.

Donald Trump sets new deadline for Vladimir Putin to agree to Ukraine peace talks within days
The US President had originally given the Russian tyrant 50 days - but the new ultimatum gives the Russian tyrant dramatically less time Donald Trump set a new deadline for Vladimir Putin to come to the table for ceasefire talks with Ukraine. The US President had originally given the Russian tyrant 50 days - which would expire on 3 September. But speaking ahead of talks with Keir Starmer in Scotland today, he said he would shorten the timeline to 10-12 days - which would make the deadline almost a month sooner, between 7-9 August. Consequences for Russia failing to agree to talks would include secondary sanctions, he added. "I'm not so interested in talking anymore," Trump told reporters. Trump repeated his criticism of Putin for talking about ending the war but continuing to bombard Ukrainian civilians. "He talks. We have such nice conversations and such respectful and nice conversations and people die the following night with a missile going into a town." 'And I say, that's not the way to do it,' Trump said, adding: 'I'm disappointed in President Putin.' Following the talks, a Downing Street spokesperson said the two leaders agreed they 'must maintain momentum to bring about an end to the war with Russia, including by putting economic pressure on Putin to come to the table without further delay.' Putin has 'got to make a deal. Too many people are dying,' Trump said. A Russian drone blew out the windows of a 25-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, the head of the city's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, wrote on Telegram. Eight people were injured, including a 4-year-old girl, he said. The attack also started a fire in Kropyvnytskyi, in central Ukraine, local officials said, but no injuries were reported. The main target of the Russian attack was Starokostiantyniv, in the Khmelnytskyi region of western Ukraine, the air force said. Regional authorities reported no damage or casualties. The western part of Ukraine is on the other side of the country from the front line, and the Ukrainian military is believed to have significant airfields as well as arsenals and depots there. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces carried out an overnight strike with long-range, air-launched weapons, hitting a Ukrainian air base along with an ammunition depot containing stockpiles of missiles and components for drone production.

Britain's 'MAGA summer': Donald Trump and JD Vance lead red-cap brigade enjoying time in the UK this summer... to the horror of Ellen DeGeneres
The UK is seeing a 'MAGA British summer' as Donald Trump and JD Vance lead the red-cap brigade in enjoying time in the UK. While the US President touched down in Scotland this week for the opening of a new 18-hole golf course at his estate in Aberdeenshire, vice president Vance is expected to rent a holiday cottage in the Cotswolds next month. His upcoming trip comes much to the dismay of talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who abandoned her Californian lifestyle to enjoy a quieter life in the Cotswolds with wife Portia de Rossi in November 2024. DeGeneres revealed their move to the English countryside was prompted by last year's US election, specifically the re-election of Trump. The former talk show host is reportedly planning a two-week break from her adopted home when Vance visits with his family in August. And with Trump back on British soil again in September for an unprecedented second state visit, one Republican told The Times that the UK is facing'a Maga British summer'. Ms DeGeneres said last week that Trump's victory influenced her move to the UK. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis and I was like, ''He got in'',' she said. 'And we're like, ''We're staying here then''.' Last week it was revealed she is selling one of her two Cotswolds properties for a cool £22.5million - £7.5million more than she paid for it. The Cotswolds is a popular British holiday hotspot, and home to political powers like former Prime Minister David Cameron and celebrities such as the Beckhams. The Vances were also in London before the 2024 US election, when they were given a personal tour of the British Museum by George Osborne, its chairman. In 2011 Barack Obama took time out to visit his ancestral home in Moneygall, Ireland. And in 2023 former US President Joe Biden embarked on a tour of Ireland, with the UK hardly getting a look-in. Rishi Sunak had to treck to Northern Ireland to meet him at the airport. Trump is not only visiting the UK to play golf, as he also has important trade talks set up with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. As he touched down at Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire on Friday, Trump told Europe to 'get your act together' over illegal immigration - branding it a 'horrible invasion' that is 'killing Europe'. Trump is set to meet Sir Keir and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney on Monday. He will also enter trade talks with the EU chief this afternoon after officials from both sides said they were nearing an agreement. But an EU diplomat claimed 'everyone is quite tense' - after Trump threatened 'you're not going to have Europe anymore' if illegal immigration continues.

TALK OF THE TOWN: First she fled Trump... now Ellen DeGeneres is on the run from his Vice President
She swapped the US for the Cotswolds after Donald Trump became President – and now I hear that Ellen DeGeneres is fleeing again next month to avoid his right-hand man. I'm told the former talk show host, who moved to Oxfordshire last year with her wife Portia de Rossi, is planning a two-week break from her adopted home when Vice President JD Vance visits with his family in August. Mr Vance, wife Usha and their three young children are expected to rent a cottage in the affluent region, home to political powers like former Prime Minister David Cameron and celebrities like the Beckhams. I hear Mr Vance is keen to visit Ms DeGeneres's beloved local The Bull at Charlbury, which she has visited with Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda Field. I'm told this is why the US TV star planned her urgent getaway, as she's eager to avoid an awkward run-in with Mr Vance there. Ms DeGeneres said last week that Trump's victory influenced her move to the UK. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis and I was like, 'He got in',' she said. 'And we're like, 'We're staying here then'.' Last week it was revealed she is selling one of her two Cotswolds properties for a cool £22.5million – £7.5million more than she paid for it. I wonder if JD will put in an offer? Lily's tragic heroine act ends in tears… Lily Allen has spoken of her 'emotional turmoil' after her divorce from Netflix star David Harbour. I wonder if she mined her experience when playing tragic heroine Hedda Gabler in Bath last week? In Henrik Ibsen's play, Allen plays a woman trapped in a loveless marriage. So perhaps it's no wonder she broke down in tears during the curtain call while the audience erupted into congratulatory applause. Violet won't get minted on Vinted visitations She was once branded Lady Violet 'no' Manners after neighbours complained about her wild parties. Now the daughter of the Duke of Rutland is facing new criticism after selling clothes – including Prada and Chloe – on shopping app Vinted. Users claim she is unreliable, with one commenting: 'Would avoid as she never bothers to send.' 'Untrustworthy,' said another. 'Excuse me?' Violet wrote in her defence. So is the customer always right? Meg makes up Does Meg Mathews fear what's about to be revealed in a forthcoming memoir by PR supremo Fran Cutler? I only ask because Meg, the former wife of Noel Gallagher, has called a truce with Fran, who was the heart of the Primrose Hill Set in the 1990s along with Kate Moss, Jude Law and Sadie Frost. Fran and supermodel Kate fell out, and Meg seemingly sided with Kate. Now Meg has shared a photo with Fran with the message: 'Time truly is a healer, bringing us together to cherish moments past and present.' Stone Roses bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield took matters into his own hands when his sons received a slew of nasty comments after being photographed backstage with Noel and Liam Gallagher on the Oasis tour. 'My rich daddy got me tickets to a band I've never heard of,' one online troll said. It prompted Mani to set the record straight, replying: 'Noel and Liam know my two boys very well... Never heard of Oasis when they are from Manchester and are Stone Roses sons? Have a word with yourself.'
