Everyday Sun Safety: A Doctor-Approved Guide for Year-Round Protection

When it comes to skin health , sun protection isn't just for beach days or tropical vacations. Dermatologists consistently stress that everyday sun exposure—whether during a morning walk, a drive to work, or sitting by a sunny window—contributes to long-term skin damage. The good news? Daily sun protection can be simple, effective, and seamlessly integrated into one's routine. Srinivasa, MBBS MD, Dermatologist, Seema's Skin Care and Laser Centre Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors to ensure it fully absorbs into the skin. Many people underestimate how much is needed; a generous amount is essential for proper coverage. It's important not to miss commonly overlooked areas such as the ears, back of the neck, hands, and feet. Reapplication every two hours is key, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure or after sweating. Dr. Tarunveer Singh, MBBD MD, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Kumars S-Thetics, Jalandhar Sun safety doesn't stop at sunscreen. Clothing also plays a significant role in shielding skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. Long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses offer passive yet powerful protection. Advances in fabric technology have also introduced UPF-rated clothing that can help guard against UV radiation without compromising comfort. Dr. Prateek Nagrani, MBBD MD, Consultant Dermatologist, Super Derm, New Delhi One of the most overlooked facts is that sunscreen should be worn indoors as well. UVA rays, which are responsible for premature aging and deep skin damage, can pass through windows and glass. This makes daily sunscreen application important even for those spending most of their time inside, particularly in well-lit environments or near windows. To build consistency, sun protection should be treated as a daily habit—just like brushing one's teeth. Keeping sunscreen within reach during a morning routine or choosing skincare and makeup products that include SPF can make all the difference over time. Dr. Sumit Sethi, MBBD MD, Consultant Dermatologist, Dermastation, New Delhi Ultimately, sun protection isn't about dramatic lifestyle changes. It's about making small, sustainable choices each day. With consistent care, it's possible to halt the damage caused by invisible, cumulative UV exposure—and preserve the skin's health and appearance for years to come. Dr. Priyanka Kalyankar, MBBS, MD, Kalyankari Clinic, Aurangabad The HALT THE DAMAGE, FACE THE WORLD campaign by LUPIN addresses the growing threat of sun damage among Indian population. With rising UV exposure and rising pollution levels, contributing to Skin Damage by causing issues such as Pigmentation, Breakouts, and Premature aging. The campaign urges early education on the importance of Daily Sun Protection, and Proactive Skincare to Halt the Skin Damage, by promoting awareness and encouraging consistent use of dermatologist-backed solutions, this initiative empowers individuals to take control of their skin health before the damage becomes permanent. It's a vital step toward building a sun-smart generation that faces the world with confidence and care. He's Supposed to be a College Freshman. Instead, He's Lighting Up the French Open.

Paris The sun-baked court at the far end of Roland-Garros was so loud that Joao Fonseca couldn't hear himself speak. Everywhere he turned, he was met by the noise of fans in the canary-yellow jerseys of Brazil's national soccer team. They were all chanting his name. This, Fonseca realized, was how it feels to be one of the most exciting teenagers in tennis. 'Sometimes I feel goosebumps,' the 18-year-old said after punching his ticket to the third round of the French Open. 'It's a vibe that I can't explain.' Fonseca isn't the only one at a loss for words. His formidable talent had been talked about for years in junior circles, but his emergence on tour wasn't expected to happen for at least another season or two. Under his original plan, Fonseca was supposed to have spent this past year as a freshman at the University of Virginia. Instead, Fonseca turned pro before he ever enrolled in school. 'How old is he? Is he still in diapers?' seven-time major winner Venus Williams joked on the TNT broadcast. 'I wish I was hitting like that at that age.' That purity every time he strikes a ball had already secured him an endorsement deal at age 16 with On, the brand part-owned by Roger Federer. Then in 2023, Fonseca won the U.S. Open boys' title and finished the year as the world's No. 1-ranked junior. 'Joao could have gone to whatever school he wanted,' UVA's director of tennis Andres Pedroso wrote in an email. Only the real question wasn't where he would end up, but how long he might stay. Pedroso understood when he recruited Fonseca that there was a real chance he would never suit up for the Cavaliers. Still, he figured it was a risk worth taking. 'His parents and his coach were very up front from the beginning that at any point he could turn pro,' Pedroso wrote. 'Ultimately it would be Joao's decision.' Fonseca tested the professional waters by playing an ATP 500 tournament in Rio in February 2023. Though he was bageled in his very first set and lost his only match in little over an hour, he felt that the pro circuit was the place for him. Fonseca's mind was made up. 'It was an incredibly tough decision for me and my family as I have been dreaming about living a college life in Charlottesville,' Fonseca wrote at the time. 'But, in the last few months, professional tennis called me in a way that I simply couldn't say 'no.'' Every day since has served as a reminder that he made the right call. At this season's Australian Open, Fonseca stunned world No. 9 Andrey Rublev, becoming the youngest man ever to take down a top-10 player in the 52-year history of the ATP rankings. Along the way, he also happened to crack the hardest forehand of the entire tournament at 112 mph. Fonseca followed it up in February by claiming his first tour-level title in Buenos Aires. 'He has the fire in the racket but he has the fire also in his personality,' veteran coach and analyst Patrick Mouratoglou said at the time. Fonseca's matches around Roland-Garros are easy to find—they're the ones you can hear even before you approach the stands. Through the first two rounds, Brazilian fans packed Court No. 7, then Court No. 14, with many more stuck in the long lines at the entrance. It's been a while since they had anyone to be this excited about. Brazil has only ever produced one men's Grand Slam winner and he left fans with a few indelible memories of Paris. Gustavo Kuerten, the curly-haired clay-court specialist, won the French Open three times between 1997 and 2001. 'He's a legend for us Brazilians,' Fonseca said. Like his hero, Fonseca grew up with an appreciation for the clay. That comfort was obvious on Thursday as he slid around in a slugfest against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The turning point was a second-set tiebreak that saw Fonseca crank up his level and eventually take the match in straight sets. 'Something happens when he really goes for it on his forehand,' Herbert said. 'There were two in the second set that really went through the air fast and traumatized me in the tiebreak.' The Brazilian fans responded by turning the stands into their little corner of Rio. And on Saturday, they'll be back to watch Fonseca face No. 5 Jack Draper of Great Britain in one of the matches of the third round. 'The expectations are going to come. People are going to talk,' Fonseca says. 'It's normal. You need to deal with it.' Write to Joshua Robinson at

Why Sunscreen Is A Year-Round Essential; Not Just a Summer Staple

Last Updated: This National Sunscreen Day, remember: come rain, shine, or screen time, don't forget your SPF When we think of skincare must-haves, moisturizers and serums often take centre stage. Yet, experts agree that sunscreen is the most crucial—and commonly neglected—step in your daily skincare routine. As we mark National Sunscreen Day, two leading voices in dermatological science, Dr. Shilpa Vora, Chief Research & Development Officer, Marico, and Dipak Shah, Senior Scientist, Himalaya Wellness Company, share their insights into why this humble skincare product is a non-negotiable in every season. 'Wearing a sunscreen is one of the most overlooked steps in a skincare routine," says Dr. Vora. 'However, it's the most important part of maintaining healthy skin. Exposure to the sun even indoors or on cloudy days, can cause redness, premature aging, dark spots, and even skin cancer." Dipak Shah echoes this, explaining that both UVA and UVB rays pose significant threats. 'UVA rays penetrate deeply and accelerate skin aging, while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn. A broad-spectrum SPF not only helps prevent photoaging and pigmentation but also plays a role in lowering the risk of skin cancer." Is Morning Application Enough? Many assume that one morning application is sufficient—but that's a myth. 'While the morning application is critical, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially if you're outdoors, sweating, or exposed to water," advises Shah. 'Even indoors, UV rays can penetrate through windows." Dr. Vora recommends a similar approach: 'If you have a long day ahead, reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Even during sunset hours, if you anticipate sun exposure, it's wise to add a protective layer." One of the biggest misconceptions? That sunscreen is just for summer. 'Even on overcast days, up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate through clouds," explains Shah. 'Monsoons don't mean a break from sun protection. UVA rays, in particular, can pass through both clouds and glass windows." 'Sunscreen is a year-long skin essential," Dr. Vora emphasizes. 'It's not just for the beach—it's for daily protection, no matter the weather or your location." Are You Applying It Right? Choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type is only half the job. Proper application makes all the difference. 'Use the two-finger rule—squeeze sunscreen along the length of two fingers for each application area," suggests Dr. Vora. 'Don't forget commonly overlooked areas like your ears, neck, and hands." Shah adds, 'As per the American Academy of Dermatology, most adults need about 1 ounce (a shot glass full) to adequately cover exposed skin. And always apply it 15 minutes before sun exposure for it to bind effectively." Finding the Right Formula for You Dr. Vora recommends different formulations based on skin type and need: Kaya Youth Protect Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++: Ideal for youthful, nourished skin with added antioxidants. Kaya Daily Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 30: A balanced daily-use formula that blends skincare with sun protection. Sunscreen isn't just a summer fling—it's a lifelong relationship. From battling pollution and free radicals to protecting against premature aging and cancer, sunscreen stands as your skin's first line of defense. So this National Sunscreen Day, remember: come rain, shine, or screen time, don't forget your SPF.

Is applying sunscreen just once in the morning enough?

Daily sunscreen application is crucial, but a single morning application isn't sufficient due to wear-off from sun exposure, sweat, and time. Dr. Shilpa Vora recommends reapplying a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen every 2-3 hours, even on cloudy days, to prevent sun damage. Consistent reapplication, coupled with antioxidant-rich skincare and hydration, ensures comprehensive skin protection for healthy, radiant, and youthful skin. Our skin is constantly exposed to harsh UV rays, making daily sun protection essential. While applying sunscreen in the morning is an important step, it often isn't enough to keep your skin protected throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors, exposed to digital screens, or experiencing heat and sweat. Sunscreen naturally wears off due to sun exposure, sweating, touching your face, or even the passage of time. For consistent and effective protection, we recommend reapplying every 2–3 hours. A high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen is key to preventing sun damage such as pigmentation, wrinkles, and dryness, and with the right care, even existing damage can be improved. Let's explore why this common habit might not be doing as much as you think, and what you should be doing instead. Many times it's assumed that a single layer of sunscreen in the morning provides all-day protection. But in reality, even the most advanced sunscreens—like our water-resistant SPF 30 gel or broad-spectrum SPF 50 formula enriched with antioxidants—require reapplication to maintain their efficacy. The truth is, even powerful ingredients like Polyglutamic Acid (which smooths fine lines), Niacinamide (which reduces age spots and strengthens the skin barrier), and a blend of five potent UV filters can only work effectively when applied correctly—and consistently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Here's what we recommend Apply sunscreen generously—about a nickel-sized amount for your face and neck—at least 15–20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2–3 hours, and always after swimming or sweating. Don't skip sunscreen on cloudy days either—UVA rays that cause ageing and long-term skin damage still penetrate through clouds and glass. A lightweight, water-resistant gel makes midday touch-ups easy, non-greasy, and refreshing. It's not just about how strong your initial shield is—it's about maintaining that shield consistently throughout the day. Secrets to anti-ageing: 7 simple daily habits that give us healthy skin And skincare goes beyond the surface. Repair and protect with antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, Niacinamide, and replenish moisture with Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, and Ceramides. Support your skin from within by staying hydrated and eating antioxidant-rich foods. With consistent care and smart sun protection habits, your skin can stay healthy, radiant, and youthful.
