Metro-east man shot in face during failed kidnapping, four arrested

A 52-year-old Uber driver from Monroe County is expected to survive despite being shot in the head during an attempted kidnapping early Saturday, police said. According to a press release from the Columbia Police Department, the Columbia resident picked up two males, ages 17 and 20, in North St. Louis at about 2:30 a.m. A short distance into the ride, one of the males displayed a handgun and demanded he take them to his home. Instead, the driver drove into the parking lot of the Columbia Police Department to seek help, at which point the one of the two males fired the weapon, striking the driver in the face, the release stated. The suspects then fled on foot toward Bolm-Schuhkraft City Park and disappeared into a wooded area. Police and Columbia EMS workers immediately began treating the wounded driver and transported him to a local hospital. According to the release, the man is in critical condition but expected to survive. A short time later, police officers spotted a silver GMC SUV occupied by two females driving slowly in the area where the suspects had fled. Police used a drone to follow the GMC and later observed two Black males exit the woods and get into the vehicle, the release stated. Police stopped the SUV and all four occupants were arrested.. A gun also was recovered, police said. The suspects names have not been released pending criminal charges. The wounded driver's name also was not released.

TfL licence delays 'a matter of life and death'

The family of an Uber driver has said they fear the stress caused by a delay in the renewal of his private hire licence may have contributed to his death. Robert Dale was left unable to work because of the delay - which was due to software problems caused by a cyber attack on Transport for London (TfL) last September. Mr Dale died aged 65 after a heart attack in November, three months after he applied for his licence renewal and a month after it expired. His son believes the day-to-day pressure of the situation reduced his father's quality of life and badly affected his health. The problems caused by the cyber attack meant some drivers were unable to work for months. Some took out loans, and others missed payments on their mortgages. In a recent letter to TfL and the mayor of London, Mr Dale's son Ben Dale said his father wrote numerous emails urging TfL to renew his licence, as its expiry date approached. These emails became increasingly desperate, he said. In his letter, he said it was "a matter of livelihoods, mental health, and in our case, life and death." He said his father had been "happy, popular and dedicated" but there had been a noticeable change in him when he was left unable to work. "Every single day. That is all he talked about. "We started to really feel like we were losing our dad and my mum, her partner, mainly because of the complete stress that he was just consistently under. "It was relentless". TfL is now able to issue temporary licences "where it is appropriate to do so" but private hire drivers are still protesting and want compensation for their financial losses. One driver, Kambiz Hemati, said he was still "up to his neck in debt". He waited four months for his renewal, and described that time as "like hell". "I wasn't working and the costs were piling up." He said he had bought an electric car, as requested by TfL, and was beginning to default on the monthly payments for it as well as his mortgage, and he was worried about his young son. "I had to borrow from banks and use credit cards. "I have to pay that all back and that means more hours and tiredness. This is not the way drivers should be treated." The Dale family believes the "failings of TfL" and the "complete lack of communication and acknowledgement of any wrongdoing" led to Mr Dale's mental health deteriorating. His son said it was difficult to say if the stress Mr Dale was under "was the exact reason" his dad died, but he was "certain the quality of life he had up until his death was significantly worse" because of it. "He was great. Everybody loved him. Always making jokes, trying to make people laugh. He loved people. "He was very inquisitive, always wanted to know how people were doing and just wanted the best for people. "Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of drivers are going through exactly what my dad went through." Helen Chapman from TfL said they were "carrying out a comprehensive review" and would respond to the Dale family's concerns in full. She added they "were aware some drivers have been further impacted due to the introduction of a new licensing system. "We have taken a number of steps to mitigate the impact of these delays by recruiting and training additional staff and granting short-term private hire vehicle driver licences." A spokesperson for the mayor of London said his "deepest sympathies and thoughts" were with the Dale family and the concerns raised in their letter "would be looked into". Uber driver thought he was safe when he escaped burning building on firefighter's ladder...then the unthinkable happened

An Uber driver trying to escape a burning New York City building on a fireman's ladder fell to his death after it buckled underneath him. Ashiq Hussain, 53, and another person were seen on bystander video climbing down an FDNY ladder from the top floor of a Brooklyn apartment on Monday when the ladder's upper portion gave way and sent Hussain plummeting to the ground. Firefighters were shown quickly gathering around him as the father-of-four lied limp on the sidewalk. Emergency crews immediately put Hussain on a stretcher and brought in a second ladder. A medical examiner determined Hussain died from blunt-force trauma, the New York Daily News reported. Relatives of Hussain, an Uber driver who is originally from Pakistan, blamed the fire department for his tragic death. 'They did really wrong. They took the head of the family,' Hussain's cousin, Mazhar Iqbal, told the Daily News. 'They ruined the family's life.' Hussain and his roommate were seen climbing down an FDNY ladder from the upper floor of a Brooklyn apartment when the top portion gave out and sent Hussain plummeting to the ground Hussain's wife and four children were set to move to the US to finally be with the 53-year-old, who had moved to the country three decades prior, the Daily News reported. 'He's worked hard for his family,' the owner of M9 Deli and Grill, located below Hussain's apartment, told the outlet. 'He actually came in recently and told us he was so happy his family was finally coming. 'He was a very nice, respectful person. He comes in here, he checks on us, [saying] "Hi, how are you guys?" He knows my father. We're basically family. It's tragic. Tragic.' The FDNY said it was aware of the incident and was investigating the 'facts and circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a civilian immediately,' the Daily News reported. The ladder is no longer being used as the fire department investigates. Hussain lived in the apartment with two roommates. The other two made it out safely, and one called Hussain's family to let them know that the father was being rushed to the hospital. The rideshare driver had called Iqbal only moments before to tell him: 'I'm standing by the window' as the fire caused smoke to fill the unit. 'He was trying to breathe from the outside because inside there was a lot of smoke,' his cousin told the Daily News. 'I told him: "Be careful, soon the firemen are going to come and you can hang up the phone." I told him: "Be careful when you're going out to the ladder," because he is older and he was overweight.' Hussain had been the one to alert his roommates to the fire. He worked overnight shifts and had just returned home when the blaze erupted started around 7am Monday, the outlet reported. 'This is a guy who literally saved two lives just minutes before he lost his own,' an unidentified family friend told the Daily News. 'A true hero.' His family and friends remembered him as kind and hardworking person. 'I don't think you'd find a single person who had anything bad to say about him. He was always up there, right up at the front of the line to help people,' another friend told the outlet. Hussain worked hard to fund his four children's education, and was even looking for a new place to live that would fit his entire family once they arrived in New York. The family is now working to get his body back to Pakistan to be buried, the outlet reported.
