In Punjab, scholars fight for unsung patriots' place in history at event dedicated to martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh
1 2 Patiala: Punjabi University on Saturday commemorated the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh with a symposium aimed at spotlighting his legacy and urging the preservation of lesser-known freedom fighters' histories. Held under the aegis of the Shaheed Udham Singh Chair, established in the university's political science department, the event was themed 'Shaheed Udham Singh: An Embodiment of Self-Respect and Freedom'. The symposium featured keynote speaker Sukhdev Singh Sohal, a retired academic from Guru Nanak Dev University, and writer Lakhwinder Singh Johal as chief guest. Vice-chancellor Jagdeep Singh presided over the gathering, joined by faculty of social sciences dean Jaswinder Singh Brar. The VC said in his presidential address: "We are fortunate to be born in a free country, and we owe this to the sacrifices of our martyrs." He directed the institute to prepare a consolidated volume using Shaheed Udham Singh's diaries, letters, and related documents. He also extended gratitude to Paramjit Kaur Gill, chair in-charge, for leading the initiative. Echoing the concern, Lakhwinder Singh Johal noted that figures like Madan Lal Dhingra, Meva Singh Lopoke, and Udham Singh — all of whom laid down their lives in the freedom struggle — have often been overlooked in public memory. Citing the Caxton Hall assassination, he reminded attendees that Udham Singh's killing of Michael O'Dwyer — who had justified the Jallianwala Bagh massacre — was an act of historic retribution. In her welcome remarks, Gill outlined the chair's ongoing research efforts and announced plans to collect additional archival materials relating to Udham Singh's life and legacy. Saini pays tribute to great revolutionary Udham Singh
Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that the austerity, sacrifice, and courage of the great revo-lutionary Shaheed Udham Singh will always inspire us. He recalled that Udham Singh avenged the Jalli-anwala Bagh massacre by killing General Dyer on foreign soil. This act of bravery remains an everlasting inspiration for the entire nation and a beacon of patriotism. The Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday addressed a public gathering at Sunam, the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh, in Punjab. Earlier, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes at Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial. He also planted a sap-ling at the memorial and visited the Udham Singh Museum, where he saw the photographs, letters, and memories associated with the martyr. He recorded his thoughts in the visitor's book. Chief Minister met the family members of Shaheed Udham Singh, accompanied by Sardar Hardayal Singh, who presented him with a memorandum of their demands. Later, the Chief Minister attended a public meeting organized by BJP leader Daaman Bajwa on Sangrur Road, where Punjab BJP leaders gave him a warm welcome. The Chief Minister said that it was an honor to visit the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh. He recalled that during the Baisakhi gathering at Jallianwala Bagh, General Dyer ordered the firing on unarmed civil-ians after blocking all exits, leading to the killing of thousands. It was then that Udham Singh vowed not to rest until he avenged the massacre. After 21 years of perseverance, on April 13, 1940, Udham Singh shot General Dyer on British soil, aveng-ing the massacre of April 13, 1919, and ultimately sacrificed his life for the nation. Revolutionary Udham Singh's courage, sacrifice, and determination remain unparalleled. It is because of countless sacrifices by heroes like Udham Singh and Bhagat Singh that we live in a free India today, the Chief Minister said. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to building the India of the martyrs' dreams. We all must work together to realize the vision of the freedom fighters for an independent and prosper-ous nation, he added. Answering a question, he criticized the Punjab government for failing to fulfill the promises made to the people. The government has shown people mere illusions. Just as they misled the people of Delhi, who have now understood their reality, the people of Punjab are also realizing the same, he stated. Meanwhile, Haryana's Minister of State for Sports, Gaurav Gautam, stated that due to the state's excel-lent sports policy and consistent medal wins at national and international events, Haryana has emerged as a leader in Indian sports. Despite representing only 2% of the country's population, Haryana's ath-letes contribute to 60% of India's medal wins at international competitions. Continuing this legacy, the Sports Mahakumbh 2025 will begin in two phases starting August 2, with 15,410 athletes participating in 26 different sports.

In BJP's Punjab push, Haryana CM Saini steals a march over CM Mann on Udham Singh martyrdom day
In a move that created ripples in political circles, Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini visited Punjab's Sunam to pay tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 86th martyrdom day on Thursday, hours before Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal reached the legendary freedom fighter's native town in Sangrur district. The Haryana CM's surprise visit to the martyr's memorial not only took place before the Punjab government's function but was also marked with political symbolism. Sporting a saffron turban, Saini paid homage at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial, built over nearly 2 acre land in Sunam, and met the martyr's descendants. 'I pay tributes to this son of the soil who couldn't bear the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as a child and avenged it by killing Michael O'Dwyer (Punjab lieutenant governor during the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre) in England. I salute him and his family's sacrifice,' the CM told media persons. In December 2023, the BJP-led Haryana government under then CM Manohar Lal Khattar had declared a state gazetted holiday on Udham Singh's martyrdom anniversary. As Saini replaced Khattar in March next year, July 31, 2024 marked the first time during the former's first term as the CM, when the day was observed as a state holiday. In contrast, for the past several years, Punjab observed only a restricted holiday on July 31. However, the Kamboj community, listed in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and some government employee associations took up the matter this year with the AAP-led Punjab government, demanding the declaration of a state gazetted holiday on July 31. Udham Singh was from the Kamboj community. Sources said the Mann government was also under pressure to do it after Haryana's move. During his Sunam visit, Saini kept the focus on paying homage to Udham Singh. When reporters asked him about the Rs 113 crore bill sent by the Punjab government to Haryana for the upkeep and maintenance of Bhakra canal, he side-stepped the row, just saying, 'Talks are on with the neighbouring state. Both states will sit together to find a solution.' Saini, who belongs to the OBC, was accompanied by Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma. After leading the BJP to a resounding win in the October 2024 Haryana Assembly polls, Saini, 55, has been going all out to boost his credentials as an OBC leader. Besides engaging with prominent OBC organisations and leaders from across the country, he has also been making frequent visits to Punjab. These moves, BJP sources said, are part of Saini's strategy to emerge as an OBC leader at the national level and expand his party's footprint in Punjab slated for the Assembly polls in early 2027. After the Udham Singh Memorial event, Saini also addressed local residents at a BJP-organised meeting. BJP state secretary Daaman Thind Bajwa said,'Our programme was scheduled early to avoid overlap with the Punjab government's function. CM Saini arrived around 10 am via chopper and left at around 11.30 am for Sirsa by road as weather conditions in Sirsa didn't allow flying,' she said. The Punjab government's event was held later in the day in Sunam's grain market area, which was addressed by CM Mann and Kejriwal after they paid floral tributes at the memorial. Sources said that due to waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall in Sunam, the duo had to ride a chopper to reach the grain market, barely a kilometre away from the memorial, which reflected poor drainage in the town. In April this year, Saini had addressed a gathering in Derabassi in Mohali, where Gurdarsan Singh Saini, son of former Akali stalwart Gurnam Singh Derabassi, joined the BJP. Saini also participated in the Saini community events in other Punjab towns like Ropar and Kharar in March-April and had campaigned in Ludhiana in June for the BJP's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta. During his visits to Punjab, Saini has sought to showcase the 'Haryana model' of governance, highlighting how his government has been providing minimum support price (MSP) on 24 crops. He has made this pitch in his Punjab events, trying to woo farmers and rural voters. With the Saini community having influence in nearly 15 constituencies across Punjab – especially in Ropar, Kharar, Derabassi, Mukerian, Banga, and Hoshiarpur – the Haryana CM's outreach in the state appears calibrated. 'The Saini community has always existed in Punjab, but ever since Nayab Singh Saini became CM, he has actively started connecting with them. It's good that the CM is introducing Punjab voters to the BJP's Haryana model,' said a state BJP leader, adding that Saini's Thursday visit also sought to send a political message. Kamboj Sabha to get plot in Panchkula; Hisar's Bada Suleman village renamed Udhampura
1 2 Hisar: During a programme held on the occasion of Shaheed Udham Singh's martyrdom day in Sirsa, chief minister Nayab Singh Saini made several key announcements aimed at community development and regional recognition. The chief minister announced that the Kamboj Sabha will be allotted a plot in Panchkula , and Bada Suleman village in Hisar district will be renamed Udhampura in honour of Udham Singh. He further assured that once applications are submitted, Kamboj Sabha will be given plots on a priority basis in Fatehabad, Kaithal, and Jagadhri. Responding to local demands, CM Saini said the govt will explore the feasibility of establishing a Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital in the name of Shaheed Udham Singh on the land belonging to Baba Bhuman Shah Dham. He also addressed the demand for diverting the Rangoi Nala from the Ghaggar river through Rampura Dhani, stating that the project will be initiated following a feasibility review. On the issue of reservation in Class I and II govt jobs for the OBC category, the chief minister said the proposal would be forwarded to the OBC Commission for consideration. Other public demands raised during the event will be sent to relevant departments for further evaluation. Paying tribute to Udham Singh, CM Saini hailed him as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and supreme sacrifice. "His contribution to India's freedom struggle is an inspiring tale of unwavering determination. His name will forever remain etched in golden letters in the history of the 'Jung-e-Azadi'," the chief minister said. He called on youth to draw inspiration from freedom fighters like Udham Singh, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Chandrashekhar Azad, and Madan Lal Dhingra, who chose the path of sacrifice to free the nation from colonial rule. Baba Brahmadas, successor of Dera Baba Bhumanshah Ji, welcomed the Chief Minister and praised his dedication to public service, stating that he is working tirelessly for the upliftment of all sections of society.
