AFL superstar Isaac Heeney drops Jamarra Ugle-Hagan trade ‘hint' unprompted

Sydney Swans superstar Isaac Heeney has revealed his wish for a bombshell trade later this year, dropping the name of rival key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan unprompted. The Swans have struggled for consistency among their leading talls since Lance Franklin's retirement. Heeney has been a constant as an undersized target while Joel Amartey and Logan McDonald have struggled with injuries in 2025 after breaking out across the past two years. Ugle-Hagan has previously been linked to Sydney amid his on-off situation with the Western Bulldogs this year. But his name is back in the spotlight thanks to a potential future teammate. 'Isaac Heeney's dropped a bit of a hint on Sydney's recruiting plans,' Luke Hodge said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters on Tuesday night. The All Australian was discussing life in the NSW capital in a car ride with interviewer Felix Von Hofe when the conversation turned. 'People come up and they want to have a photo it's generally pretty quick, whereas I feel like Melbourne, the AFL states, can sometimes be a bit more pushy. I don't know how, say, the Daicos boys do it and live a normal life,' Heeney said. Von Hofe said: 'To any free agent forwards out there, key forwards, this is a great place to live.' Heeney laughed and replied: 'Any big boys — Jamarra, you want to come up?' The Agenda Setters co-host Dale Thomas said it was 'interesting that that was the name front of mind, tip of tongue'. 'So Jamarra maybe to Sydney?' he added. Ugle-Hagan is under contract for 2026 and would need a trade to secure a fresh start away from Whitten Oval. The 23-year-old has not played a game at any level this season after dealing with mental health and personal issues. He returned to training in June before spending another week away this month because of a family matter. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge continues to temper expectations that Ugle-Hagan, who kicked 78 goals in 45 games across 2023-24, could earn a call-up this year. 'I can't really give you much other than he's chipping away, and he's training when he can,' Beveridge said last week. 'He's had some bereavement stuff back with the mob in Framlingham and he's working his way back through his fitness levels.'

Bontempelli 'close' to re-signing with Bulldogs

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge believes the club and captain Marcus Bontempelli are moving closer to a new deal. Arguably the best player in the AFL, the 29-year-old is off-contract at the end of the season. With just six weeks before the end of the home-and-away campaign, Bulldogs fans have become increasingly anxious about their premiership-winning superstar. While tight-lipped, Beveridge's response and grin indicated he wasn't too concerned about Bontempelli potentially seeking a league-shifting move elsewhere. "I think we're getting close, but that's all I can really say," Beveridge said on Wednesday. Beveridge's remarks came on a day when Jamarra Ugle-Hagan returned to the club after more than a week away spent dealing with a family matter back in his home in western Victoria. Ugle-Hagan trained with the main group as the Dogs prepare for their Friday night blockbuster against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The 23-year-old hasn't played a game at any level this season after dealing with mental health and personal issues. "I can't really give you much other than he's chipping away, and he's training when he can," Beveridge said of Ugle-Hagan. "He's had some bereavement stuff back with the mob in Framlingham and he's working his way back through his fitness levels." The Bulldogs' trip to Brisbane shapes as season-defining, as they currently sit a game outside the top-eight after losing to Adelaide last Saturday. Their record against current top-eight teams this year sits at 1-7, something the Bulldogs are desperate to rectify. They led the reigning premiers by 39 points when they met back in Gather Round in April. But in a dramatic change of events, the Lions found form to produce a 60-point swing and win by 21 points. Following the defeat to the Crows, criticism came hard for the Bulldogs and their inability to beat the best. Outspoken media commentator Kane Cornes slammed Beveridge, saying "no coach does less with more". When questioned about Cornes' latest swipe, Beveridge asked if any of the journalists present worked with the 300-game Port Adelaide midfielder. "I just feel sorry for you," Beveridge said, before walking off to laughs because it was the question of the press conference. Beveridge and Cornes have had numerous run-ins over the years, most recently before a game in Geelong earlier this season.

Troubled AFL star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has car linked to drive-by shooting

Police have questioned troubled AFL star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan about his car after it was thought to be used in a drive-by shooting. The former No.1 draft pick is not accused of anything and his club, the Western Bulldogs, say they are 'satisfied' their player was 'not involved'. The shooting, however, did involve a 71-year-old man and occurred in the south-east Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris on June 11. Reports suggest three shots were fired at grandfather Douglas Lee while he was returning to his Garden Parade home at around 10pm. After the shots were fired, a four-wheel drive fled the scene. The vehicle, which police believe is owned by Ugle-Hagan, had been parked on the street, waiting for Lee. When the vehicle took off, it almost hit Lee's car. The shooting left a bullet hole in his car, and Lee later described the incident as 'bizarre'. Police also believe Lee was not the intended target and it was a case of mistaken identity. He was not injured in the attack. 'The Western Bulldogs Football Club are aware of a police incident involving a vehicle registered to Jamarra Ugle-Hagan,' the club said in a statement. 'The club is satisfied that Jamarra was not involved in the incident and that he had not been in possession of the vehicle for some time before it occurred. 'Jamarra has fully cooperated with the subsequent police investigation.' Near the end of June, Ugle-Hagan took to Instagram to say his Toyota HiLux had been stolen. The 23-year-old posted two photos to his Instagram story that appear to accuse a man of stealing his car from Bay Street in Port Melbourne. 'If you see this fella. Tell him drop my car back off at my house,' he said on June 23. 'Bay Street tax is crazy,' he added, alongside two laughing emojis. The text was written over a screenshot of CCTV that captured a man in sunglasses and a cap. In the background of the image is a portable triangle-shaped board out the front of a Guzman y Gomez franchise. He then posted a photo of a Toyota HiLux. It's the latest twist in a tumultuous year for the highly talented AFL player. He is yet to play a game this year and has battled a number of personal issues. He has returned to the club but at the end of June required more time away from due to the death of an elder in his home community of Warrnambool. That break came not long after he had reintegrated himself at the Bulldogs after weeks away at a health retreat in northern New South Wales. Speaking to former Brisbane players Rhys Mathieson and Mitch Robinson on their podcast Rip Through It, Ugle-Hagan recently opened up on what has been going on in his life behind the scenes. He said he 'felt like I was on my own the whole time' while away from the club, and admitted he had had suicidal thoughts. 'All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,' he added. 'It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn't drive. I just didn't trust myself driving. 'There were times when I would think about, to be honest with you, just not even worth even living. 'I went through a struggle where I didn't want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.' The Western Bulldogs said they were 'continuing to support Jamarra' as he worked through a management plan that had been developed with him earlier this year.

Star Bulldog's car linked to drive-by shooting

Embattled Western Bulldogs star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has been questioned by police after his car was suspected of being involved in a drive-by shooting in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. Police and club officials said Ugle-Hagan was not involved in the June 11 incident in Glen Iris, in which shots were fired at a vehicle being driven by a 71-year-old man in what is suspected to be a case of mistaken identity. Glen Iris resident Douglas Lee said he was returning home when his car was struck by the first shot. 'I looked up, saw a car approaching me rapidly ... but as I steeled myself for the collision, they passed me and fired two more shots,' Lee said. The grandfather wasn't injured, and said he felt lucky. 'The size of the hole ... I'm glad it didn't hit me,' he said. 'The shooters sped away in the vehicle. 'I refuse to live in fear, and encourage the community to take to the streets, don't hide.' Police confirmed Boroondara-based detectives were investigating the nighttime shooting, but had ruled out any involvement of the 23-year-old owner of the four-wheel-drive. 'A man was driving on Gardiner Parade around 10.10pm when he heard a gunshot, believed to be from a vehicle parked nearby,' police said in a statement. 'Police were told the vehicle drove away, narrowly missing colliding with the man's car. 'Investigators have identified a vehicle of interest in relation to this investigation. That vehicle is yet to be located, but investigators have spoken with the registered owner of the car and are satisfied that they were not involved in the incident.'
