Netherlands sends last batch of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine
The last consignment of Dutch F-16 fighter jets destined for Ukraine has left the Netherlands.
The aircraft will first stop in Belgium, where they will be prepared for delivery, the Dutch Defence Ministry announced in The Hague on Monday.
This brings the total number of fighter jets provided by the Netherlands to Ukraine to 24.
Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans called it an important milestone. "Due to the daily Russian airstrikes, the F-16s are vital for Ukraine," he said, adding that defence against Russian aggression is also in the interest of Ukraine's western European partners.
The minister also spoke of major successes by the Ukrainian defence forces thanks to the F-16s, including the shooting down of Russian cruise missiles and drones.
The Netherlands delivered the first batch of fighter jets last year. According to the ministry, Ukraine will continue to receive support in the form of training, spare parts, ammunition and fuel.
Ukrainian pilots are also being trained at the European F-16 training centre in Romania.
The Netherlands is leading the international coalition to provide the F-16s, together with Denmark and the United States.
