Ulster final ends in ugly scenes as Donegal and Armagh camps clash

A gripping Ulster SFC Final ended in chaotic scenes in Clones when Donegal and Armagh players tangled on the pitch as jubilant Donegal fans were streaming on to the field into the middle of it all. Jim McGuinness's side came out on top of a truly pulsating clash that went all the way to the final seconds of extra-time before a fifth Ulster crown on his watch was secured. However almost immediately after the final hooter sounded a confrontation erupted, appearing to be sparked between a Donegal player and the Armagh bench. A provincial decider which was sky high on drama and quality had also seen its share of niggle between the rivals. Some of that looked to erupt in the moments after the contest had been decided. Ecstatic Donegal fans were invading the pitch in Clones just as more players and members of the Donegal and Armagh camps got involved and the situation threatened to devolve further. Both McGuinness and McGeeney got right into the thick of the scuffle to help separate those involved and settle tensions before Donegal would raise silverware.

Dogged Donegal break Armagh hearts again in another epic Ulster decider

Ulster SFC Final: Armagh 0-28 Donegal 2-23 It happened again. Somehow, Donegal and Armagh produced another remarkable Ulster final. After an epic contest and extra-time, Donegal won by one. There were ugly scenes at the end of an epic encounter as members of the Armagh panel took issue with some goading celebrations, with players having to be forcefully separated on the field. It was a disappointing end to a dramatic final. A crowd of 28,788 fortunate patrons gathered to witness an outstanding fixture. On several occasions, Donegal looked to deliver a killer blow. Time and again, Armagh found a response. They managed to draw level after a Ciaran Moore goal in the second period of extra-time. However, a final Niall O'Donnell point proved decisive. Entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well from early in the day. The good weather paved the way for every field to become a car park. A fiver was the going rate and euro or pound would do. Along Church Hill, the hats, flags or headband floggers were also offering vapes. Cash or card worked just fine. It all functioned as a timely reminder that the Ulster final in Clones is not just a glorious occasion, it's an opportunity. The sun was out, a roaring trade in town, the sight of Rian O'Neill back with the Armagh panel in a shock move announced by his enormous frame striding off the team bus; the boom truly was back. O'Neill was not added to the matchday 26 so it was left to another comeback kid to make his mark. Michael Murphy headed to the edge of the square to renew his showdown with Aidan Forker. Three times Donegal delivered long balls on top of him. He was fouled for a free from the first. He scored the second and broke the third for an Oisín Gallen point. At the start of the second half, he put an end to a patient attack with another corker. It was 0-11 to 0-14 at half-time with Donegal dominant for periods of the opening half. Amidst the swirl of excitement, the start was error-strewn. Tiernan Kelly handpassed away the first possession. The first four shots were all inaccurate. Michael Langan hit the first score from play after nine long minutes. Midway through the half, a nip-and-tuck encounter lurched towards the gold and green side. Ciaran Thompson swung over two two-pointers. Twice Ethan Rafferty was required to make a save. His kickouts were under pressure and four consecutive points on their way to a seven-point lead with the turnaround approaching. Ryan McHugh's man-marking job on Rory Grugan was proving effective. After a semi-final where they only lost one of their own kickouts, Armagh lost six in the first half alone. Yet they did what this outfit consistently do and dug deep. Four of the last five scores came from the All-Ireland champions. Conaty was immense. Oisin O'Neill forced one orange flag and could have had another if not for a timely Shaun Patton touch. Once more, Donegal surged. Conor O'Donnell's driving run looked in vain when the ball broke out of his hands but Hugh McFadden pulled on it first time and found the net. That blow had Armagh rattled. They conceded another three on the bounce. Darragh McMullan and Ben Crealey both missed goal chances, the latter clipping Jarly Og Burns and the post on its way wide. And still, they refused to yield. Conaty cut through again, Stefan Campbell came on and scored immediately, Oisin O'Neill slotted over. The Crossmaglen man swung over a two-point free thanks to a 4-v-3 breach before he was replaced. Jason Duffy announced his introduction with a fisted point. With the hooter looming, the gap was just one. Jim McGuinness cut an exasperated figure as his side squandered several opportunities to see it out. Jamie Brennan kicked a wide. Aaron Doherty dropped one short. Peadar Mogan spilled possession. One final chance fell to Conaty and he fittingly delivered to send the decider to extra-time. Ten minutes later they were still level. Jarly Óg Burns swung first, Paddy McBrearty came back on and added another free. All over the field bodies were dropping. Subs came back on. Guttural roars rang rained down. It was sporting theatre. Even when Moore produced the late green flag, Armagh dug deep. Rafferty landed a two-point free to draw level. O'Donnell's late point gave Donegal a chance to hold on. They did. Just. Scorers for Donegal: O. Gallen 0-4; C. Thompson 0-4 (2 tp); C. Moore 1-1; H. McFadden 1-0; M. Murphy 0-3; M. Langan 0-2, P. Armagh vs Donegal live score updates from the Ulster final

It's a clash of champions this evening as Armagh and Donegal meet in an blockbuster Ulster SFC final in Clones. The Ulster champions are in one corner, while the All-Ireland victors are in the other. One team has the trophy the other covets. The only other time the provincial and All-Ireland champions have met in the Ulster SFC was back in 2009 when Tyrone were the holders of the Sam Maguire and they defeated the-then Ulster champions Armagh by three points in Clones. Kieran McGeeney's men got the better of the Red Hands in St Tiernach's Park in this season's semi-finals. Indeed, if they win their first Ulster title since 2008, they would face a quick rematch with Malachy O'Rourke's men in the All-Ireland series, joining Mayo and Cavan in Group One. The losers will join Galway, Dublin and Derry in what has been dubbed the 'Group of Death' and will face the Oak Leafers at home in round one. As if these teams needed any extra incentive to win? They met three times last season with a kick of a ball separating the teams. The League game in the Box-It Athletic Grounds was a draw with Donegal winning the Division Two final by one point in Croke Park. Last year's provincial decider went to penalties and Michael Murphy's return, coupled with a red card to Aidan Forker, ensured Donegal kept the upper hand on Armagh when they locked horns in Ballybofey in February. Today's Ulster final is likely to go right down to the wire and, perhaps, over it and we'll have all the latest build-up and team news ahead of throw-in. Ulster SFC Final: Armagh 0-20 Donegal 0-20 (Donegal win 6-5 on penalties) Armagh suffered a second successive Ulster SFC final defeat on penalties as Donegal clinched the Anglo Celt Cup after a dramatic and pulsating decider in Clones. As the thunder rolled before throw-in an almighty downpour forced the player to rush to the sideline for gloves midway through the first half before the sun broke out in the second half. The weather changed several times throughout the game, but Armagh's luck in penalty shootouts remains the same. The Orchard County were four points ahead in when Stefan Campbell fired over his second point from play, but they were reeled in by Donegal. Niall O'Donnell, Oisin Gallen (free) and Jason McGee left it a one-point game before Paddy McBrearty, sprung from the bench in the second half, kicked the 30th point of the game to force extra-time. Tiernan Kelly had a late opportunity to win the game, but his mark was wide and Donegal took the lead in the opening moments of extra-time via a McBrearty free. Scores from Aidan Nugent and Andrew Murning had Armagh ahead in extra-time with Nugent (free) and Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí exchanging scores before Peadar Mogan levelled the game once more on the restart. Armagh opened up a two-point cushion and looked to be on course for victory as Oisin O'Neill landed a fine score before Nugent scored his third. Yet again, Armagh couldn't close the game out as Daire Ó Baoill and Odhran Doherty scored to bring the game to penalties. Remarkably, the first 10 penalties were all successfully converted with Donegal's Ciaran Thompson, Aaron Doherty, Michael Langan, Jason McGee and Ó Baoill all on target as were Armagh's Shane McPartlan, Oisin Conaty, Conor Turbitt, Aidan Nugent and Tiernan Kelly. Patton got close to saving Kelly's effort and, after Doherty gave Donegal the advantage, he denied McPartlan's second penalty to seal Donegal's first Ulster title since 2019. Armagh scorers: Conor Turbitt 0-4, Aidan Nugent 0-3 (0-1f), Ben Crealey 0-2 (0-1m), Stefan Campbell 0-2, Oisin Conaty 0-2, Andrew Murnin 0-2, Ciaran Mackin 0-1, Rory Grugan 0-1, Aidan Forker 0-1, Rian O'Neill 0-1 (0-1m), Oisin O'Neill 0-1. Donegal scorers: Oisin Gallen 0-6 (0-2f), Niall O'Donnell 0-2, Paddy McBrearty 0-2 (0-1f), Shane O'Donnell 0-2, Daire Ó Baoill 0-2, Peadar Mogan 0-2, Jason McGee 0-1, Michael Langan 0-1, Odhran Doherty 0-1, Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí 0-1. Rian O'Neill is at St Tiernach's Park. . and maybe not as a spectator! The Crossmaglen ace hasn't played for the Orchard County this season, but arrived with the team. It remains unclear whether or not he'll be added to the match-day squad ahead of the game, but his return could be a huge boost to the All-Ireland champions. In November 1925, John F O'Hanlon, the Managing Director of the The Anglo-Celt newspaper in Cavan and a former vice president of the Ulster Council, presented the council with a cup to be given to the winners of the Ulster SFC. Fittingly, Cavan were the champions of that year and given with the trophy and they retained the title in 1926 with Jim Smith being the first captain to be presented with the trophy after the Ulster Final. The original cup was replaced with the new one in 1963 and both will be on display in Clones today and will be brought out onto the field ahead of throw-in by Ulster GAA president Michael Geoghegan and Johnny O'Hanlon, the grandson of John F O'Hanlon. Cavan remain the most successful team in the history of the Ulster Championship with 40 victories, well clear of Monaghan and Tyrone on 16. A win for Armagh today would move them on to 15 Ulster titles while Donegal are bidding for their 12th, which would move them level with Down on the roll of honour.
