Singer Lorde faced 'such damage' after poor arena tour sales

New Zealand singer Lorde has recalled looking out at "massive drapes" covering rows of empty seats during her 2017/2018 Melodrama arena tour and admits she "had such damage" over the experience. In April, the 28-year-old released her first solo single since 2021 called What Was That. Now, the Auckland native is gearing up for her Ultrasound Tour, which kicks off in September in support of her upcoming fourth album, Virgin. Speaking to the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Lorde said not packing out her previous arena tour left her feeling "so vulnerable". "This is my first arena show since then, because I had such damage from that feeling," she said. "People don't think about the fact that the person on stage, whose name is on the banner, is looking at someone walking out, some seat not being full. It's so vulnerable." Asked to give advice to artists who may find themselves in a similar situation, she said: "You have to just be like, 'Oh my God, it's insane how many people are here,'" she said. "It's incredible. People paying money. And they love it, and they don't ever think you did a bad job. They love it; you couldn't do a bad job." The Royals singer most recently delighted US fans with a surprise Coachella appearance alongside British singer Charlie XCX. During the set, she announced it was "Lorde Summer 2025", leading fans to speculate the new album will be released in the coming months.

Lorde crashes a Lorde themed nightclub event in Sydney

Grammy-winner Lorde has stunned fans by making a surprise appearance at an event dedicated to her in Sydney. The star crashed the 'Lorde-themed club night' at Mary's Underground where she danced and sang along to her own songs alongside delighted revellers on Sunday night. 'We're throwing a club night dedicated to @lorde on Sunday, 25 May as part of our new Sunday series at @marysunderground!,' organisers wrote on promotional posts in the lead up to the event. 'We're officially in the L4 era, so it's only right we throw a party for our true Lorde & saviour! 'Come dance (or cry) in the club as DJ @xeimma plays all the eras, alongside alt-pop bangers, drag shows, and themed drinks!' It comes after 28-year-old singer recently announced a new album called Virgin and her Ultrasound world tour. It will be her first record since Solar Power in 2021 and follows the release of her single What Was That earlier in 2025. Lorde – who shot to global fame as a teenager with her signature track Royals – has released three albums and, according to a media release, Virgin will showcase a 'bold evolution in her sound and storytelling'. The announcement comes just more than 18 months after the Green Light hit maker revealed she had been working on new music while living in London. The New Zealand pop star – whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor – told fans in an email newsletter that she had been living in the British capital since mid-2023. 'Things feel clear here. I haven't seen many friends; mostly, I'm alone with my thoughts,' she said. 'I go swimming, I go to work, I walk home or take the train, I eat in my kitchen, I go to bed thinking about what I'm making. I'm starting to miss my friends and family, like a vitamin I'm deficient in.' Lorde also revealed in the same update that she has been battling a mystery illness. At the time, she noted that she had stopped taking her regular medication after spending more than a decade on it and found herself becoming ill on several occasions. 'The little yellow pill I took every morning for thousands of mornings since I was 15. My gut isn't working properly, my skin is worse than ever, I've gotten sick half a dozen times.' Lorde went on to explain to fans that she has 'never really listened' to her body and has used this year to focus on her health after 'ignoring' it for so long. Virgin will be released on June 27.

Lorde quickly adds second Minneapolis show to North American tour

When Virgin arrives in June, it'll have been nearly four years since Lorde released a new record. The New Zealand-born pop star's fourth release will be accompanied by a North American and European tour that starts in September and brings her to the Armory in Minneapolis. After announcing the "Ultrasound" tour late last week, Lorde has already added a second date in Minneapolis "due to overwhelming demand," the Armory says in an announcement. The "Royals" singer will come to Downtown Minneapolis on Oct. 11 and 12 with The Japanese House and Empress Of as openers. The second show was added so quickly that the first hadn't even gone on sale to the general public. Both shows went on sale Friday, May 16.
