Singer Lorde faced 'such damage' after poor arena tour sales

RTÉ News19 hours ago

New Zealand singer Lorde has recalled looking out at "massive drapes" covering rows of empty seats during her 2017/2018 Melodrama arena tour and admits she "had such damage" over the experience.
In April, the 28-year-old released her first solo single since 2021 called What Was That. Now, the Auckland native is gearing up for her Ultrasound Tour, which kicks off in September in support of her upcoming fourth album, Virgin.
Speaking to the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Lorde said not packing out her previous arena tour left her feeling "so vulnerable".
"This is my first arena show since then, because I had such damage from that feeling," she said. "People don't think about the fact that the person on stage, whose name is on the banner, is looking at someone walking out, some seat not being full. It's so vulnerable."
Asked to give advice to artists who may find themselves in a similar situation, she said: "You have to just be like, 'Oh my God, it's insane how many people are here,'" she said. "It's incredible. People paying money. And they love it, and they don't ever think you did a bad job. They love it; you couldn't do a bad job."
The Royals singer most recently delighted US fans with a surprise Coachella appearance alongside British singer Charlie XCX.
During the set, she announced it was "Lorde Summer 2025", leading fans to speculate the new album will be released in the coming months.
