Protest over delay in repair works on Thammanam-Pullepady Road
Kochi: Protest is brewing over delay in repair works of Thammanam-Pullepady Road, one of the major road stretches in the city. The road has fallen into disrepair at more than 20 spots between Thammanam Junction and Pullepady bridge. The pothole-filled bridge itself has become a nightmare for commuters. Several tiled portions of the stretch are also broken, posing danger to two-wheeler riders. The junction near Stadium Link Road at Karanakkodam has become another major trouble spot. Locals point out that the condition worsened after Kerala Water Authority (KWA) dug up the stretch for pipeline works. While corporation blames KWA for not restoring the dug-up sections, local body officials claim that repairs in other areas can only be taken up once heavy rains subside. Local councillor Sakeer Thammanam said it is not practical to carry out works during heavy rain. Youth Congress Thrikkakara constituency committee staged a unique demonstration on Saturday by planting banana saplings in the potholes. Protest was inaugurated by Uma Thomas, MLA, who criticized authorities for their lackadaisical approach. She warned that deteriorating condition of city roads is causing frequent accidents and urged immediate action to make the stretch motorable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo As govt is planning to develop the road into four lanes, revenue department has submitted a proposal for social impact assessment (SIA) study for Phase II land acquisition, ahead of issuing 11(1) notification for land acquisition. Moolampilly package: MLA, Collector to visit rehabilitation plots
A delegation comprising Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas and Ernakulam District Collector N.S.K. Umesh on Tuesday morning will visit the rehabilitation plots allocated as part of the Moolampilly package at Indira Nagar in Vazhakkala village near Kakkanad. The affected families had given up land for the rail and road connectivity to the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal in 2008. The marshy land of 4.30 acres along the shores of the Kadambrayar was filled up and divided into rehabilitation plots for 114 families from Moolampilly, Kothad, Cheranalloor, Edappally South, Eloor, Manjummel, and Kalamassery to construct homes. Though the evictees received between four to five cents, 112 families out of the 114 backed out from constructing homes on the rehabilitation plots citing the unstable nature of the land, which was further reaffirmed in the examination conducted by the Public Works department. As per the order notifying the Moolamppilly rehabilitation package, the beneficiary families were entitled, along with other benefits, to motorable road, power, drinking water, and drainage on a priority basis. According to a verdict of the Kerala High Court on July 20, 2008, the government is supposed to give rehabilitation plots fit for two-storey buildings. Until that condition was honoured, the beneficiaries were also entitled to a monthly rent of ₹5,000. Matters got further complicated after revenue documents for the rehabilitation plots coming under Vazhakkala village in Kanayannur taluk were not forthcoming from the offices concerned. The Moolamppilly Package Coordination Committee had pointed out all these issues at a meeting of the Moolamppilly Package Monitoring Committee chaired by the Collector on July 21. The visit to the rehabilitation plots is based on the outcome of that meeting.

Moolampilly committee submits report on poor condition of Thuthiyoor resettlement land to MLA
Kochi: Members of Moolampilly package implementation monitoring committee submitted a report to Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas on Monday regarding poor condition of the alternative land in Thuthiyoor. This land was assigned to evictees as part of rehabilitation of those displaced by Vallarpadam container transshipment terminal project. In their report, the members, led by CR Neelakandan, visited resettlement areas provided to the evicted in Thuthiyoor village. They submitted that, except for five people, no one has built a house because houses constructed there are sinking. A total of 184 families were compulsorily displaced in 2008 for the project and received land in Thuthiyoor area of Thrikkakara municipality. Report stated that even the monitoring committee, chaired by district collector, set up by govt to make the resettlement process efficient, is reluctant to convene a meeting. The first meeting was convened on June 27, 2024. None of the assurances given by collector and officials in that meeting were implemented. Committee members visited the house of Vidyadharan, who constructed a house on the land at Thuthiyoor. They requested the MLA to apply pressure on district collector to take immediate measures, including reinforcing the side of the stream passing nearby. "Ensure that the monitoring committee for resettlement meets regularly and implements the assurances given in a timely manner," the report said. Other members of the committee include Francis Kalathinkal, Kuruvila Mathews and Eloor Gopinath.
