AIADMK councillors walk out from Salem Corporation council meeting claiming poor safety

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors on Friday walked out from the monthly council meeting, claiming there was no safety for them. Mayor A. Ramachandran presided over the meeting in which a total of 83 resolutions were passed. Two-minute silence was observed for condoling the death of passengers who were killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad and for the death of Valparai MLA T.K. Amul Kandasamy. A resolution thanking the Chief Minister for announcing ₹100 crore funds for Salem Corporation was passed in the meeting. AIADMK whip K.C. Selvaraj said that in the last month's meeting, the DMK councillors attacked the opposition leader and the Mayor, who should ensure the safety of the AIADMK councillors, gave a complaint against us. The Mayor is the first accused in that issue and a white paper should be released on what action was taken on DMK councillors regarding the attack. There is no safety for AIADMK councillors and no healthy debates are taking place in the meeting, he added. It created a verbal duel between DMK and AIADMK councillors and after that, AIADMK councillors walked out of the meeting. Replying to the allegations, Mr. Ramachandran said that cases were registered against both sides by the police. Speaking at the meeting, DMK and IMUL councillors highlighted the stray dog menace in the Corporation and demanded control of the dog population. They also demanded an increase in animal birth control programmes. Replying to their demands, Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan said that for performing sterilisation, a tender was announced and it will be held on July 18. DMK councillor of ward 47 S. Punitha thanked the Tourism Minister R. Rajendran's intervention and immediately provided a sanitary complex at Andipatti, which was 50 years of demand of people. Ward 13 DMK councillor A.M.S. Rajkumar alleged that Corporation officials are not completing the work in the wards and councillors have to face the wrath of the public. At that time, Kondalampatti zonal chairman M. Ashokan alleged that officials were acting like councillors and at least for the next six months, officials should hear the demands of councillors as after six months, councillors have to meet the people for votes. Corporation Commissioner Elangovan told the councillors that on July 15, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is inaugurating the Ungaludan Stalin scheme. Under this scheme, Corporation staff will visit every household and receive their grievances through application forms. Their demands will be addressed in 45 days. Similarly, as the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme is extending to government-aided schools, an additional 8,000 students will benefit, he added.
