Former student arrested for bringing AR-15-style rifle to Union County school campus

A former student has been arrested for bringing a gun to a school campus, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office. On May 25, deputies said 19-year-old Amen Sankar drove to Porter Ridge High School, parked under the covered walkway near the entrance, and took photographs of his vehicle. ALSO REAd: CMS revamp communication protocol after mass shooting threats Sankar allegedly then removed an AR-15-style rifle from the vehicle and took additional photos displaying the firearm just feet from the school's main entrance. These images were later shared via his Snapchat account, according to deputies. However, school was not in session, and the campus was unoccupied. Parents were then notified about the incident by the district. Deputies said Sankar was quickly identified and arrested. He was then charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus. 'The safety of our schools and the well-being of our students, staff, and community will always be a top priority for this office. Weapons are not permitted on school campuses, with the only exceptions being those specifically allowed and properly secured under North Carolina General Statutes. There is no excuse for violating these laws. This office will continue to respond swiftly, decisively, and without hesitation to any threat, act of violence, or unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds,' said Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey. Sankar received a $5,000 secured bond and has since been released. However, the investigation into the case is ongoing. VIDEO: CMS revamp communication protocol after mass shooting threats

Deputies on breakfast break save choking man at Waxhaw restaurant

A group of Union County deputies were having breakfast at a Waxhaw restaurant when their morning break quickly turned into a life-saving mission. Inmate saves Mecklenburg County detention officer from choking The restaurant's owner told Channel 9's Gina Esposito that he's glad the deputies were there because he's not sure what would've happened if they hadn't been. Union County Sheriff's Office deputies were having breakfast early on May 4 at Stacks in Waxhaw. 'The waitress came over and asked us if we could go help this guy that was choking,' Deputy Sarah Tucker said. 'He was a booth over from us.' A 78-year-old man was struggling to breathe. 'One of our sergeants, Sgt. Williams, performed the Heimlich (maneuver) on him,' the deputy said. The food was dislodged, and the man could finally breath. Union County Sheriff's Office spokesman James Maye said they are thankful the deputies were in the right place at the right time. 'It goes without saying, I don't think they expected to do that in that moment, but I'm glad they were there because this situation could've ended differently,' said Maye, public information officer. The deputies said they do annual life-saving training, including how to save a choking victim, CPR, and how to use an AED. The waitress declined to speak with Esposito about the rescue. Mud-covered man reports armed men took lawnmower, but he's arrested, NC cops say

A man found 'covered in mud' told deputies he fought hard but ultimately lost a battle to keep two armed men from taking his grandmother's John Deere lawnmower, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina. And the evidence seemed to back him up — until the 28-year-old 'casually offered to call the 'robbers' and ask them to bring the lawn mower back,' the sheriff's office said in a May 19 news release. The odd robbery was reported Thursday, May 15, on Landsford Road, about a 40-mile drive southeast from Charlotte, and deputies were instantly suspicious at his offer. 'For those unfamiliar with standard 'robber' protocol, no, it's not standard practice for armed robbers to hand over their contact information to their potential victims or willingly return stolen goods,' the sheriff's office said. 'A short time later, two men showed up with the lawn mower and provided deputies with Facebook Marketplace messages showing that (man) had sold them the mower, claiming it was his to sell.' It was then that deputies started to connect the dots on 'inconsistencies' that included the victim getting a ride with the accused robbers, officials said. 'Just so everyone is on the same page at this point, let's recap. (He) stole his grandmother's lawn mower, sold it online, rolled around in the mud to look like he'd been in a fight, and then called 911 to report a fake robbery,' the sheriff's office said. The lawnmower was recovered and taken 'back to its rightful owner,' and the 'victim' was arrested and charged with felony larceny, parole violation, obtaining property by false pretenses and filing a false report to law enforcement, the sheriff's office said.
