Promise David delivers Union St Gilloise their first title since 1935
Promise David was the hero for Union St Gilloise this afternoon after he came off the bench to score twice and secure the side their first top flight Belgian title since 1935. Union, one of the most successful sides in Belgium prior to the Second World War, have had to wait 90 long years to add title number 12 to their trophy collection. Yet, after a 3-1 home win over Gent on Sunday afternoon, the side could finally celebrate. At 1-1 after half-time, Promise David was introduced by Sebastien Pocognoli and made an instant impact. His physicality was too much for the Gent defence to handle and he punished them for it. Prior to this, the Buffaloes defence had appeared pretty comfortable facing Franjo Ivanovic (scorer of the opening goal) and Mohamed Fuseini. Yet David's ability to hold the ball up and turn his defender saw him create a chance with almost his first touch. The striker then slotted his first goal in the 68th minute, a fine finish into the corner. He grabbed his second in the 75th to send the Josef Marien wild with celebrations. Advertisement Union had started the game well, taking the lead after 10 minutes. However, Gent had equalised through Andri Gudjohnsen just before half-time to make it a nervous interval for the fans and players. With Club Brugge also drawing, if Union could not find a winner then they left themselves vulnerable to a Club victory over Antwerp. Yet Promise delivered the final blow and a well deserved title for a club that has come so close on many occasions since their return to the top flight in 2021. After their cup win last year, Union can really call themselves one of the premier sides in Belgian football once again. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Sébastien Pocognoli not changing Union St Gilloise's preparation ahead of title deciding clash with Gent
Union St Gilloise can end a 90 year wait for their 12th Belgian top flight title on Sunday. If they side beat Gent, or just better/match the result of Club Brugge, they will win the title for the first time since 1935. Speaking to the media ahead of the game, the sides head coach Sébastien Pocognoli stressed that the side are approaching the game the same way they have approached all their matches this season. Pocognoli said 'It would be a mistake to change everything, because the team has performed well in recent weeks'. The side will do some preparation for the game on Saturday as they do before any game, rather than taking this opportunity to rest the players. They will be without one of their talismanic defenders in Kevin Mac Allister. The Argentine centre back is suspended after picking up a booking in the comprehensive win over Antwerp last weekend. Options to step into his place are the likes of Fedde Leysen and Ross Sykes. Former Accrington Stanley defender Sykes has come up big for Union in the past, scoring important goals for the side. It would be quite a moment for the 25-year-old English central defender if he is able to do the same this Sunday. All the games will kick off at 6.30pm Belgian time. Club Brugge travel to Antwerp for their final game of the season. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Brighton owner Bloom bids for 29% stake in Hearts
Brighton owner Tony Bloom has made a formal offer of just under £10m to take a 29% stake in Heart of Midlothian. The proposal will be considered by fans' group Foundation of Hearts (FoH) who are the major shareholders in the Scottish Premiership club and must receive more than 50% approval from members to be successful. A consultation period will end on 26 May, with the vote taking place after an extraordinary general meeting is held. Bloom would be purchasing non-voting rights shares, which would not impact the 75.1% voting rights held by FoH. If successful, Bloom would also be entitled to one place on the board, but is expected to appoint a representative rather than take up the position himself. FoH are recommending acceptance of the terms and should this happen the Scottish FA would then be required to give their approval for the deal to be concluded. In a statement issued to its members, FoH say the proposed investment is a personal one and Hearts will not become a feeder club for Brighton or Union St Gilloise, where Bloom is a minority shareholder, or part of a multi-club system. It also says Bloom believes Hearts can "disrupt Scottish football" and that he wants to be a part of a "glorious chapter" in the Edinburgh club's history.

‘Dendoncker is far too passive': Former Belgian international critical of on loan Aston Villa midfielder
'Dendoncker is far too passive': Former Belgian international critical of on loan Aston Villa midfielder Anderlecht were second best to city rivals Union St Gilloise this weekend. The side lost the Brussels derby 2-0 as their poor start to the play-offs continue. Besnik Hasi's men are yet to win a game in the post-season. During the weekly Extra Time show, former Belgian international midfielder Franky Van der Elst was not impressed by on loan midfielder Leander Dendoncker. The former player said of Dendoncker's role in the opening goal 'I think Dendoncker is far too passive after Thorgan Hazard lost the ball. You can't lose the ball like this, but okay. Then you're number 6 and you're still in front of the ball. While the ball is lost 10 metres in front of him. Then you have to sprint a little to cover that zone. But he walks past the ball'. Advertisement It has been reported for some time now that Anderlecht are highly unlikely to pick up the purchase option they have as part of the deal that saw Dendoncker join them on loan. He has played 35 times for the club, with one goal and one assist. However, there haven't been enough standout performances that could justify the amount the club would need to pay to bring him in permanently. His future is certainly up in the air when he returns to England, as he is clearly not part of Unai Emery's plans for Aston Villa going forward. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson
