United Supermarkets aids Wichita Falls Area Food Bank in hunger fight

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — United Supermarkets has continued to fight hunger by generously donating to the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank. On Monday, May 5, the grocery chain donated nearly 3,900 pounds of apples. Over the years, WFAFB has received 650,000 pounds of apples from United. Food Bank CEO David O'Neil said the bank's commonality of serving the 12-county area helps it continue to serve the food-insecure. 'When we get a donation of this size, it warms our hearts for everybody here at the food bank, our board, and all of those who invest in us, because that's our mission,' O'Neil said. The mobile teaching kitchen also gave samples of a recipe that uses apples. The non-profit posts a weekly video of fresh recipes for everyone to try. 29th annual Wichita Falls Area Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament a ‘big success'

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — It was a windy but beautiful day for those who played in the 29th annual Wichita Falls Area Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament. Thirty-four teams competed for first, second, and third place, trying to hit a hole-in-one to win a brand-new ATV. United Supermarkets kicks off benefit for Children's Miracle Network Samantha Forester, president of the Wichita Falls Area Crime Stoppers board of directors, said hosting it earlier in the year rather than in years past could have contributed to the huge turnout this year. A massive turnout, which she said will significantly benefit the local crime stoppers organization as a whole. 'Crime Stoppers is an organization we pay out tips for felony crimes. We're not affiliated directly with any law enforcement agency. We're completely separate, which is how we're able to keep anonymity to our people who provide tips. And so with that being said, the money that is raised by this golf tournament and our other fundraisers throughout the year go towards paying out those tips for those crimes,' Forester said. Wichita Falls ISD board reviews academic progress reports from four schools

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The Wichita Falls ISD Board of Trustees heard from four campuses about their academic progress just before STAAR testing began. Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee said the overall theme the board heard was 'making small incremental improvements.' United Supermarkets donates to help Texomans in need Principals from Hirschi, Southern Hills, Fain, and Booker T. Washington brought their reports to board members, showing how students have progressed since taking an assessment at the beginning of the year. The reports give board members a projection of where students will be when they take the STAAR test. 'We try to educate the whole child and try to really ensure that all of our kids are growing. Every year we focus on growth. What does that mean? That means if they were reading on the third-grade level last year, we want to read on a fourth-grade level this year. Same with math. So we want constant improvement,' Lee said. STAAR testing begins April 8 for districts across the state.
