Millions of DWP claimants urged to check bank accounts at noon on Friday

Millions of households on benefits such as Universal Credit and PIP will receive their payments three days early this month - but there's a catch. Experts are warning the early payment could leave many Brits in a bind before the next one arrives, reports MirrorOnline. The August bank holiday falls on Monday, August 2, meaning anyone expecting their benefit payment on that day will get it on Friday, August 22 instead. READ MORE: Unexpected DWP payments set to arrive this week for those claiming two benefits Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp , click the link to join This applies to a wide range of benefits such as: Universal Credit State Pension Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Carer's Allowance Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Income Support Attendance Allowance Pension Credit Fiona Peake, personal finance expert at Ocean Finance, said: "Getting your money on Friday instead of the Monday might feel like a win going into the long weekend, but it means you'll have three extra days to stretch it. "That can throw your budget out, especially if you're living week-to-week. "It's not always easy to hold back spending when your account's just been topped up but blowing through your benefit early could leave you short when it really matters. "Most benefits hit accounts in the early hours, but if yours hasn't arrived by noon on Friday, check your bank again before panicking. "If nothing shows up, get on the phone. Don't wait until after the bank holiday when lines will be jammed. "Contact Universal Credit, PIP or your relevant benefits line before 5pm Friday so there's still time to get help. "Some people get caught out by thinking they'll always get their benefits early around a bank holiday. "That's not the case. If your next due date falls on a normal working day, your payment will be back to its usual timing and if you've spent early, you might already be playing catch-up." Five ways to make your money last Fiona says, "It may sound extreme, but if you've got a habit of splurging as soon as money lands, hit pause. "Most banking apps let you freeze your debit card instantly. "It gives you a cooling-off period before impulse buys." "Don't think of the early payment as a bonus. It's not. Treat Friday, August 22 like it's your usual payday and plan your week as normal." "The early payment might not line up with when your bills go out, and that can leave you short just as rent or utilities come calling. "Log into your bank now and check your direct debit dates. "Shifting them by a few days can help you avoid missed payments and overdraft charges." "If you've got a bit of wiggle room, grab extra essentials like pasta, rice, and tinned goods. That way, if money's tight in the last few days before your next payment, you've got back-up." "Round up every spend to the nearest pound and stash the difference using an app or savings pot. "It might only be a few quid, but it adds up fast and it's perfect for emergencies."

DWP confirms Universal Credit payment date change due to bank holiday weekend

DWP confirms Universal Credit payment date change due to bank holiday weekend Some people could be paid early this month Claimants should be aware of the change (Image: (Image: Getty) ) Universal Credit recipients are set to receive an unexpected £628 in their bank accounts this Friday, May 23. This is due to the Department for Work and Pensions paying out benefits early, because of the upcoming late May Bank Holiday. If your usual payment date falls on Monday, May 26 then payments will be made on Friday, May 23 - effectively providing you with an early instalment. This only affects those whose regular payment date coincides with the bank holiday Monday. ‌ If your regular payday isn't affected, your money will arrive as per usual. ‌ The rate for single individuals under 25 is £316, while those over 25 receive £400. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here For couples, the rate is either £497.55 or £628, depending on whether both claimants are under 25 or one or both are aged 25 or over. It's not just Universal Credit recipients who will get paid early, reports Birmingham Live. This helpline is not operational on bank holidays, but you can make contact the working day before, or the day following the bank holiday. The Department for Work and Pensions is paying out benefits early - owing to next week's late May Bank Holiday. ‌ And bear in mind: your payment won't be increased. The early payment will be at your usual rate - so you'll need to stretch your pennies further over the Bank Holiday weekend into the subsequent week and into June. Bank holidays in England and Wales include Wednesday, January 1 - New Year's Day, Friday, April 18 - Good Friday, Monday, April 21 - Easter Monday, Monday, May 5 - Early May bank holiday, Monday, May 26 - Spring bank holiday, Monday, August 25 - Summer bank holiday and Thursday, December 25 - Christmas Day and Friday, December 26 - Boxing Day.
