Egypt Allocates EGP 406 Billion to Health Sector in 2025 Budget

This allocation marks a tenfold rise in health spending since 2013, reflecting long-term infrastructure and coverage efforts. May 28, 2025 Egypt's health budget has grown from EGP 34 billion in 2013 to EGP 406 billion in 2025, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar. Speaking at the US–Egypt Policy Leaders Forum 2025, Abdel Ghaffar said the increase supports healthcare infrastructure expansion and aims to attract private sector investment into Egypt's medical and public health landscape. Between 2014 and 2024, the Ministry of Health completed 1,245 infrastructure projects, with an additional 20 expected to be finalised in 2025. Egypt currently has around 2,000 hospitals, 5,400 primary healthcare units, and over 142,000 hospital beds—including 16,300 intensive care beds. Upcoming expansions are set to add 2,650 more beds and include the development of specialised medical cities in 11 governorates. The Universal Health Insurance System is also in progress, currently being implemented in six governorates and covering an estimated 6 million residents. Officials say these developments are part of broader national efforts to improve access to healthcare and expand coverage across the country.

Egypt's health budget jumps to EGP 406bn, up from EGP 34bn in 2013: Minister

Egypt's healthcare spending has seen a dramatic increase, rising from EGP 34bn in 2013 to EGP 406bn in 2025, according to Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population. Speaking at the US-Egypt Policy Leaders Forum 2025 on Sunday, Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that the rise reflects a national focus on strengthening the economy and attracting investment—particularly in the health sector, which he described as rich with opportunity. The minister revealed that the Ministry of Health and Population has requested additional funds from the Ministry of Finance to support further development, citing the ongoing demand for quality healthcare services. Over the past four years, Egypt has provided healthcare services to an estimated 10 million foreign residents, highlighting the growing pressure on the system. Currently, Egypt's healthcare infrastructure includes approximately 2,000 hospitals, 5,426 primary healthcare units, 142,400 hospital beds, and 16,300 intensive care beds. Abdel Ghaffar also noted that between 2014 and 2024, the ministry has completed 1,245 healthcare infrastructure projects. Looking ahead, 20 new projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. These will add 2,649 hospital beds and include the construction of specialized medical cities across 11 governorates. Additionally, the implementation of the Universal Health Insurance System is underway in six governorates, covering a combined population of around 6 million people.

Egypt launches 5th Check on Your Child campaign under universal insurance plan - Health

Egypt has launched the fifth phase of its Check on Your Child campaign, a free medical screening programme targeting more than 250,000 students in public schools across five governorates covered by the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS). The Egyptian Healthcare Authority (EHA), which is overseeing the programme, said the screenings will run through October and cover pupils entering kindergarten, sixth grade, and tenth grade in the 2025–26 academic year. The campaign is being rolled out in Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, and Suez—the first five governorates included in the UHIS since its gradual rollout began in 2018. Students in all public education streams, including Al-Azhar and technical and sports schools, will be eligible. The exams include general medical check-ups, eye and skin assessments, dental exams, and visual, hearing, and mental health impairments screenings. Older students entering preparatory and secondary school will also be tested for Hepatitis C and undergo comprehensive blood tests and early screenings for chronic illnesses. Students with health issues will be referred to UHIS-affiliated health centres and units for further testing and treatment, free of charge. All results will be digitally stored in each student's electronic health record to allow for long-term monitoring through the Family Medicine Units. Students can schedule appointments through the national hotline 15344. EHA chairman Ahmed El-Sobky said the screenings are critical to supporting children's physical and mental development and detecting health problems early. He added that the initiative aligns with broader government efforts to improve public health and invest in the country's younger generations. As part of the UHIS expansion, the authority recently added two new hospitals in Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai. Earlier this month, the Egyptian cabinet approved the system's rollout in Aswan, which will begin full operations on 1 July 2025—making it the sixth governorate to join the programme. The UHIS aims to provide universal healthcare coverage for all Egyptians by 2030. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
