AU to host NAAC team today, hopes to secure ‘A' grade

1 2 Prayagraj: The University of Allahabad is all set to host the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team on May 27 to May 29 for its second assessment visit since gaining Central status in 2005. The campus is abuzz with activity as departments finalise their preparations in hopes of securing a prestigious 'A' grade, a leap from the 'B++' grade awarded during the last assessment in 2019. This visit is seen as a significant milestone for the university, which underwent major infrastructural and academic transformations in the past five years. According to official records, approximately 360 faculty positions and around 1,100 non-teaching and administrative posts were filled during Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava tenure. Infrastructural development has also taken centre stage. The university added three new hostels, an early childhood care and education centre, the Harivansh Rai Bachchan Cultural Centre, a new guest house, and several other academic buildings to improve the learning environment and accommodate growing student needs. The NAAC, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), assesses and accredits institutions of higher education in India. The accreditation and grading provided by NAAC are valid for five years and play a crucial role in determining the eligibility of institutions for govt grants and academic recognition. During the three-day evaluation, each department is expected to present a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation to the NAAC peer team. The presentations will include data on student placements, PhD completions, numbers of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowships (SRF), seminars and events hosted over the last five years, as well as research output such as published papers, books, and patents. Departments will also highlight lab facilities, teacher-student ratios, and information regarding vacant or filled teaching positions. In preparation for the visit, the university registrar issued a notification on May 22, mandating that no teaching or non-teaching staff member takes leave from May 26 to May 29. The notice also directed all departments, centres, and offices to complete necessary preparations by May 24. This inspection is critical for AU as it aims to secure an 'A' grade, which would not only elevate its academic standing but also open doors to increased funding and national academic collaborations. Faculty and administrators alike are hopeful that the recent strides in academic quality and infrastructure will help the institution achieve this goal.

Who is Shakti Dubey? How did she clear UPSC Civil Service examination after 5 attempts?

Out of 9.92 lakh people who applied for Civil Services Examinations, Shakti Dubey from Uttar Pradesh came out shining by securing the first rank in all-India exam. She cracked it after five unsuccessful attempts. The UPSC stated that about 28% of all recommended candidates were women, adding that in the top five candidates, three were women, at the ranks of 1, 2, and 4, and 11 candidates were women out of top 25 rank-holders. Shakti Dubey hails from Naini, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. She had graduated from the University of Allahabad and the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) prior to beginning her preparation for the civil services examination around 2018. She secured first rank in CSE 2024. Her subject included Biochemistry at the undergraduate level. She passed the CSE with the optional subject of Political Science and International Relations. She initially thought to become a doctor. 'I was a PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) student in school, but based on my rank, I was allotted a seat in dental. I wasn't interested in that path, so I chose to pursue a BSc instead,' Indian Express quoted Dubey as saying. 'I couldn't even clear the prelims in my first three tries. In the fourth attempt, I made it to the interview stage but fell short. And last year, I missed the cut-off by just 12 marks. That was the lowest point in my life—I genuinely thought about quitting,' she added. 'I'm going to sleep peacefully tonight. For years, jo neend puri nahi hui, aaj usko pura karungi (Today, I'll make up for the years of lost sleep)," Dubey mentioned. "Shakti studied till Class 12 at the SMC Ghoorpur, just nearby, and later topped the exam from the University of Allahabad," her father, Devendra Dubey, a sub-inspector in the Uttar Pradesh Police said. "After graduation, she pursued from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where she also topped. Though we initially sent her to Delhi for coaching, the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to return home and she continued her preparations on her own," he added. UPSC CSE Interview took place between January 7 to April 17, 2025. After Dubey, the list of five toppers consisted of Harshita Goyal, Dongre Archit Parag , Shah Margi Chirag, and Akash Garg. Fifth time lucky! UPSC topper Shakti Dubey made failures her steppingstone to success

1 2 Prayagraj: Even after facing failure four times, she remained resolute in her aim of cracking the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) civil services exam, said to be the toughest in the country. And on Tuesday, when the results were declared, Sangam city's Shakti Dubey found her name right on the top of the merit list. She claimed that internal motivation, consistent studies and family backing helped her clear the UPSC exam in her fifth attempt, bringing laurels to the city as well as parents. Shakti was given a rousing welcome by family members and locals on arrival in her hometown, Prayagraj, on Wednesday from Delhi. Shakti, who completed her undergraduate studies in biochemistry from the University of Allahabad and later studied at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), chose political science and international relations (PSIR) as her optional subject. She credited her success to her parents and teachers and claimed her father, Devendra Dubey, a sub-inspector in the traffic police in Prayagraj Police Commissionerate, has been a source of inspiration throughout her preparations. She conveyed her message to fellow civil services aspirants to maintain consistency in studies, sincerity and motivation to achieve their goals. She also suggested that one must maintain a balanced use of the internet and social media. Revealing her success mantra, Shakti said: "I concentrated on studies for 8 to 10 hours daily and focused on basic books, the syllabus, NCERT, previous years' question papers, and mock tests." Despite her clear appetite, hard work and vision, Shakti's journey was not easy. Her first three attempts ended in disappointment at the preliminary stage. In her fourth attempt, she cleared the Mains and reached the interview stage but missed the final selection by a narrow margin of 12 marks. She said it was one of the hardest times in her life. However, persistence remained the key, and she committed herself even more to her goal. Supported by her family, her father in particular, she created a strict study schedule. "I learnt from my previous mistakes and further worked on them and finally cleared the coveted exam," said Shakti adding, "I had a strong feeling to clear the prestigious exam but never imagined that I would top the civil services exam." She advised fellow aspirants to work on their weaknesses and shortcomings, work hard, and not rely too much on vast strategies, scattered preparations and resources. "Keeping minimum resources and a multiple revision strategy is the key to success," she said. Shakti said UPSC was merely an exam, and it should not decide the course of one's life. "Our final goal should be to serve the nation in the end," she said. Her family members claimed that Shakti had a clear vision of her life and always actively participated in debates and academic competitions. These experiences not only expanded her interest in public policy and governance but also helped her develop critical thinking skills essential for a civil servant. Shakti emphasised the importance of consistency, claiming that treating each day as a small step helped her stay motivated. On dealing with stress during preparations, she said whenever she felt anxious, she would talk to her family members, particularly mother.

UPSC CSE 2024 toppers: Who are Shakti Dubey, Harshita Goyal, Dongre Archit Parag? Here's what they did before becoming UPSC civil services exam toppers The UPSC Civil Services Exam is known for being one of the toughest in the country, a test not just of knowledge, but of patience, clarity, and determination. And topping this challenge in her very first attempt is Shakti Dubey, the All India Rank 1 holder for 2024. Hailing from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Shakti comes from a humble, hardworking family. Her father is a police officer, while her mother manages their home. But what made Shakti stand out wasn't privilege or special coaching, it was more than that. Following her schooling, Shakti enrolled in the University of Allahabad, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. After completing her undergraduate degree in 2016, she went on to pursue a Master of Science in Biochemistry at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. There hostel life, late-night discussions, and a vibrant campus culture broadened her horizons. It was there she discovered the value of listening to different opinions, questioning things — all traits that helped her in the UPSC exam. Her optional subject was Political Science and International Relations. After finishing her postgraduation, Shakti briefly took up teaching, although specific details about her teaching assignments are not publicly documented. 2nd Rank – Harshita Goyal Securing All India Rank 2, Harshita Goyal has emerged as a shining example of how diverse experiences can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Born in Haryana and brought up in Vadodara, Gujarat, Harshita's journey beautifully blends two cultural, the grounded ethos of the north and the academic vibrancy of the west. A Chartered Accountant by training, Harshita completed her from MS University of Baroda. But instead of pursuing a typical corporate path, she set her sights on the civil services. Her choice was Political Science and International Relations as her optional subject, far beyond the world of balance sheets and audits. 3rd Rank – Dongre Archit Parag Climbing to AIR 3 is Dongre Archit Parag from Pune, Maharashtra. A graduate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from VIT Vellore, Archit was working in an IT firm when he decided to quit and chase his UPSC dream full-time. Interestingly, this wasn't his first attempt — he had already cleared the UPSC CSE in 2023 with Rank 153. But ambition and persistence pushed him further. With his eyes firmly set on the top, he returned in 2024 and cracked the Top 3, becoming one of the highest-ranked candidates from Maharashtra this year. His chosen optional subject was Philosophy. From his schooling in Mumbai to his years in Pune, Archit's story speaks volumes about long-term vision and quiet grit. About UPSC The civil services examination is conducted annually in three stages — preliminary, main and interview — by the UPSC to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others. The civil services (preliminary) examination, 2024, was conducted on June 16 last year. A total of 9,92,599 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 5,83,213 candidates actually appeared in the examination. A total of 14,627 candidates qualified for appearance in the written (main) examination, which was held in September 2024. Out of these, 2,845 candidates qualified for the personality test or interview. Of these, 1,009 candidates (725 men and 284 women) have been recommended by the commission for appointment to various Services.
