Newsom Responds to DOJ Seeking $1 Billion UCLA Civil Rights Settlement
California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the Trump administration on Aug. 8 after the Department of Justice sought a $1 billion settlement against the University of California–Los Angeles, over alleged anti-Semitism and other civil rights violations at the university. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, California's Democratic governor said the president 'has threatened us through extortion with a billion-dollar fine unless we do his bidding.'

Trump Admin Wants $1 Billion Settlement With UCLA
President Donald Trump has upped the ante in his negotiations with the University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA), eyeing a 10-digit settlement with the school following a Department of Justice investigation into campus anti-Semitism, a White House official confirmed to The Epoch Times on Aug. 8. The $584 million in suspended research grants announced days ago could now be doubled. CNN first reported that the $1 billion settlement includes $172 million for members of the UCLA campus community whose Civil Rights were violated during the pro-Palestinian protests following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel and the war that ensued.
