Sharjah Ruler meets UKF students in Exeter Programme
25 July 2025 23:00 SHARJAH (WAM) His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Khorfakkan (UKF), met with students from the university enrolled in the joint educational programme in marine sciences at the University of Exeter, Highness was joined by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the American University of the meeting, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah addressed the students with a heartfelt, parental message, praising their academic efforts and highlighting the significance of their participation in the marine sciences programme. He expressed joy over the fruitful academic partnership and its role in equipping students with crucial knowledge and Highness stated, 'You represent the pinnacle of scientific research, which we need, especially in the Khorfakkan beaches. We are preserving the environment—trees, mountains, and the sea, which hold unseen treasures and life. There are places yet to be explored, and we urge you to be pioneers.'Offering personal reflections, His Highness said, 'My advice to you—as a student, I was like you—is to have self-confidence through knowledge. Store it in your mind, not just notebooks. Be active and attentive, even to small details. Study beyond the university to truly understand the world.'His Highness also stressed the importance of adapting one's personality to face all circumstances with resilience. He encouraged students to engage in lectures, seminars, and forums, treating the university as their second about Sharjah's development, His Highness added, 'Every city I have—God knows—is adorned with colours through projects that enrich it and deepen the sense of connection, belonging, and pride among its people, whether in the fields of education, tourism, society, or the environment. These projects are carefully designed to beautify the city and promote stronger familiarity and engagement among its residents. You can witness Khorfakkan progressing in scientific, intellectual, and social fields. We have Fatima Al-Mughni, a vibrant presence since her childhood. When we established the old market in Khorfakkan, she turned it into a gathering place for all visitors, showcasing the city's heritage and history. Sharjah Aquarium celebrates World Oceans Day
In celebration of World Oceans Day, which falls on June 8 of each year, Sharjah Aquarium organised an awareness lecture for University of Khorfakkan students on new environmental legislation to combat illegal fishing. Raising awareness about aquatic issues Rashid Jumaa Al Shamsi, Secretary of Sharjah Aquarium, emphasised the institution's commitment to raising awareness about aquatic issues and preserving the marine environment. The lecture was delivered by Professor Ahmed Al Zaabi from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, who reviewed the most prominent recent laws enacted by the UAE to protect fisheries and limit practices that harm the ecological balance. Al Shamsi pointed out that the event aims to inform the public and students about the latest legislative and technical developments in the field of ocean protection, and to enhance the responsibility of individuals and institutions towards marine sustainability.

Sheikh Sultan inaugurates Khorfakkan University's new dormitories
His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Khorfakkan, officially opened the new dormitories at the university on Monday. These dormitories are part of the university campus and consist of two separate buildings-one for female students and the other for male students. Each building covers an area of 6,286 square metres and provides plenty of amenities for the students. Sheikh Sultan led a meeting at the university's main building. The meeting involved the Board of Trustees, who are responsible for overseeing the university's operations. At the start of the meeting, Sheikh Sultan praised the hard work of the members in completing their tasks. He expressed his delight at how much the university has grown and its quick improvement compared to other local universities, aiming to become a leader in education. Sheikh Sultan also highlighted the university's efforts to include international professional certificates in its programmes, showing its dedication to preparing students for what employers look for in the job market. The Board has officially approved the budget for the upcoming academic year of 2025-2026. They also set the graduation date for the university's first group of students, which will be in January 2026. Additionally, the Board agreed to introduce a computer programme in various areas and to set up a nursery connected to the university. During the meeting, several important topics were discussed, including how to keep an eye on the academic activities at the university. This oversight will help improve the educational programmes and various fields of study offered at the institution. The Board looked over a report from Dr Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, the Chancellor of the university. The report talked about how the university has been operating, its overall performance, and some of the important progress and successes it has achieved recently. The meeting shared exciting news about an upcoming summer trip for students studying marine science and aquatic biology to the University of Exeter in the UK. They also discussed the opening of a new Marine Science Centre, scheduled to launch next October. Additionally, the Board announced that the centre will officially be named the "Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre." The Board looked over the reports from its various groups, including those focused on academics, finances, compliance, and fundraising. They discussed key suggestions aimed at speeding up scientific and educational advancements and enhancing the university's different areas of study. Meanwhile, during the visit of the new dormitories, Sheikh Sultan toured the female dormitory to see the facilities and services available to the students. These dorms are designed to create a comfortable and supportive living environment that helps students focus on their studies. They also offer social, recreational, and sports facilities, all while ensuring privacy and safety. Sheikh Sultan learned about the layout of each dormitory, which has three floors. The ground floor features 20 residential rooms, rooms for supervisors, and a couple of rooms for people with disabilities. It also includes a reception area, a dining hall, a kitchen, and several utility rooms. On the second floor, there are 26 more residential rooms, additional supervisor rooms, a classroom, and a recreation room. The third floor has another 26 residential rooms, more supervisor rooms, and a fully equipped gym for students to stay active. The area around the dormitories includes beautifully landscaped green spaces on the nearby mountain, which were carefully designed to enhance the environment and add to the beauty of the emirate.
