Aminuddin urges quick start to Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital 2 construction
SEREMBAN: Construction works on the new public hospital planned under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) should begin as soon as possible, says Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun ( pic ). The Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar expressed hope that the construction would be carried out under Budget 2026, as the city desperately needed another hospital due to a surge in population. He added that there should be no reason for the project to be held up, as the 13.2ha area allocated for the hospital belonged to the federal government. "It is my hope there will be no delays, such as for land acquisition, as the land already belongs to the government. It will be good if construction can start next year," he said. Aminuddin added that the new hospital, which would have a minimum of 400 beds, will be located behind the government medical assistants' college and the Seremban health clinic along Jalan Rasah near here. "This modern hospital will also have specialist services now unavailable at the main Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital," he told reporters after chairing the state exco meeting on Wednesday (August 13). When tabling the five-year 13MP on Aug 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the hospital, named Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital 2, was part of the government's plans to build new health facilities and upgrade present ones. An estimated RM40bil would be allocated for the purpose under the plan. Separately, Aminuddin urged the federal government to revisit a plan to build a teaching hospital at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) in Nilai, which was announced under the 12th Malaysia Plan. "I understand that Usim had also reserved land for the hospital, but to date, it has not materialised. "A government hospital in Nilai will serve people as far as Mantin, Salak and other nearby towns such as Sepang across the border in Selangor," he said, appealing to the Higher Education Ministry to look into the matter.

Make smoking, vaping Syariah offences, says academic

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider classifying smoking and vaping as Syariah criminal offences to reinforce public health efforts and curb addiction among Muslims in Malaysia, says a law academic. Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) Syariah and Law Faculty Associate Prof Dr Muzaffar Syah Mallow, in a statement, said such a move would support ongoing efforts to combat smoking, which continues to have devastating health impacts on society. He noted that although cigarette smoking remains the most common form, the rapid spread of modern alternatives such as electronic cigarettes and vape devices has complicated the issue. Cigarettes, which contain toxic chemicals from the tobacco leaf and those produced during combustion, are known to cause harm to nearly every organ and are linked to numerous life-threatening illnesses. Citing global statistics, he said smoking contributes to around eight million deaths annually, with half of all smokers dying from smoking-related causes including cancer, heart disease, and lung complications. Vaping, which involves inhaling vapour from devices powered by batteries and atomisers, has similarly been linked to serious health issues including lung damage, cardiovascular disease, and impaired brain function, especially in young users. He referred to international studies showing vaping increases risks for asthma, strokes, and coronary conditions, and may affect brain development, leading to poor decision-making and impulsive behaviour. Muzaffar pointed out that Islam has long addressed the dangers of smoking, with a fatwa issued by the National Fatwa Council in 1995 declaring smoking haram due to the harm it causes to individuals and those around them. The 2015 fatwa further extended this ruling to electronic cigarettes and vape devices, but enforcement remains lacking, as many Muslims still downplay the severity of the issue. Malaysia, Egypt agree on Usim as gateway for Al-Azhar medical studies
JASIN: The governments of Egypt and Malaysia have agreed to designate Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) as a one-stop centre for students sponsored by Al-Azhar University to pursue medical studies at the prestigious institution. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the selected students would undergo a one-year 'familiarisation course' at Usim before departing to continue their studies at Al-Azhar University. "As part of the process of sending students to Egypt, we will conduct a one-year Arabic-language familiarisation course at Usim, as agreed by both the Egyptian and Malaysian governments,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after attending the launch of the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) Dakwah Complex and the DMDI Foundation Tahfiz Centre at Maahad Tahfiz Sulaimaniyyah, Kampung Tersusun DMDI Bukit Senggeh, Selandar, here Sunday (May 25). The ceremony, officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, was also attended by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and DMDI Foundation chairman Datuk Mohd Ridhwan Mohd Ali. The DMDI Foundation Tahfiz Centre began construction in 2021 and was completed in February this year, with 37 students enrolled in its first intake. Ahmad Zahid said the government also prioritised outstanding tahfiz school graduates, especially those with a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 5, to pursue medical studies at Al-Azhar University. Commenting on PKR request to contest 13 seats in the upcoming Sabah state election, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said discussions were still ongoing between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH). "To me, the request is an internal matter among PH component parties, and we fully respect the cooperation between BN and PH as well as the negotiations with local parties in Sabah. "A final decision will be made once the Sabah state legislative assembly is dissolved,' he said. - Bernama
