An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured in a shooting early Monday morning in Regina.
Police were called to a home on the 1000 block of Edgar Street in the Eastview neighbourhood shortly after 2 a.m. CST, according to a news release.
They found an 11-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound.
Usman Gill, who lives a few doors down on Edgar Street, said he was awake when he heard a series of loud shots outside.
Gill said he has lived in his home since 2019 and never had any bad experiences. It was hard for him to believe his ears when he heard the shots.
"Is it the actual fire [of a] gunshot, or it is something like maybe the kids making something?" Gill remembers thinking.
He said he didn't see any of what happened.
"I peeked out and there was nothing here, no movement," he said.
He said many residents in the area came out of their homes.
Police arrived shortly after. Gill said officers told him there had been shots fired at a home from the street.
He said an ambulance arrived soon and paramedics brought a young girl out on a stretcher. He said his own daughter would play with the girl in the neighbourhood from time to time.
"I feel so sorry," he said. "She's a very, very little tiny girl."
Gill said he is still shaken up about the incident and having to hear the gunshots, which were "very clear."
"Most of the people came out, they were sleeping and they woke up with the gunshot sound," he said.
"It was a very, very bad experience."
Residents are still waiting for answers from police as to how or why this happened.
"We have no clue … like what was the issue? Why did they do that?" Gill said.
Regina police are asking neighbours who have video surveillance from the past 24 hours to reach out.
