SMEDA's ‘national roadmap' draft reviewed

LAHORE: The Technical Working Group (TWG) of the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP)) on Business Formalisation reviewed an initial draft of the National Roadmap, proposed by SMEDA, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation's consultants, for transition of informal businesses into formal businesses. The review meeting was held at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) head office with Saif Anjum, Secretary MoIP in chair. It was attended by Asad Islam Mahni, Additional Secretary Industries and Production, Socrat Aman Rana, CEO SMEDA, ILO Consultants Usman Khan, Muhammad Awais and senior officials of SMEDA. The other members of the TWG from private and public sector joined the discussion on zoom. CEO SMEDA Socrat Aman Rana said that that Over 84 percent of Pakistan's workforce operates informally within SMEs and home-based working sector, which creates obstacles for businesses and workers alike, hindering access to critical markets, financing, social protections, and skill development. He informed that the Project is an outcome of an earlier mapping study by ILO and SMEDA, which identified the need of developing a national roadmap for formalizing SMEs and home-based workers, removing barriers to registration and simplifying processes of regulations and operation. Federal Secretary MoIP Saif Anjum said the collaboration of MoIP with the ILO for Enterprise Formalisation Project aims to attract enterprises operating in informal sector towards formal sector by bridging the gaps in their formalization process. He observed that the informal SMEs can thrive within a formal and supportive economic framework by creating a fearless and conducive environment. He was confident that National Roadmap to be developed for enterprises will enable SME sector to add substantial value to the national economy. Earlier ILO Consultant Usman Khan gave a detailed presentation on the proposed National Roadmap for transition of the informal businesses towards business formalization. Two bank officials held for Rs35m fraud

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested two bank officers involved in a Rs 35 million fraud and obtained their four-day physical remand from a court. The suspects, Usman Khan, a former branch manager, and Shehzad Arif, a former relationship manager, were presented in the court following their arrest and were now under investigation. According to the FIA, the suspects, along with other bank staff and another man, had orchestrated the scam involving the creation of a fake bank account using forged signatures of an overseas account holder, Fazal Ahmed. They issued a fraudulent cheque book and later transferred $128,500 from the victim's account into their own. A case under eight sections of the relevant laws has been registered against Aamir Ayaz, Saeed Alvi, Fariha and Hassan Raza. The investigation was launched following the victim's complaint, which led to the unearthing of the collusion among banking staff.

Wildlife officer shot in anti-poaching raid

A team from the Punjab Wildlife Department came under armed attack during an early morning anti-poaching operation near Toba Tharola in Rahim Yar Khan district, leaving one officer injured and damaging an official vehicle. The assailants, suspected of illegally hunting endangered wildlife, fled the scene. An FIR has been registered at Derawar police station. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Senior Wildlife Ranger Usman Khan, the department received a tip-off about illegal hunting activity involving the endangered Chinkara deer. Acting on the intelligence, a team led by Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Mujahid Kaleem, along with Ranger Nadir Ali, driver Amjad Farooq and other staff, reached the area around 5:50am on Monday. The team intercepted a suspicious white vehicle believed to be involved in poaching. As officials attempted to stop the car, one of the suspects, identified as Tahir, allegedly opened fire on the officers. Wildlife Officer Muhammad Safdar sustained injuries to his face and eye due to shattered glass from the vehicle's window, while the other suspects also fired shots before escaping under the cover of darkness. The FIR includes charges under Section 324 (attempted murder), Section 427 (mischief causing damage), Section 186 (obstructing public servants), and Sections 148 and 149 (rioting and unlawful assembly) of the Pakistan Penal Code. Additionally, Section 12 of the Punjab Protected Areas Act 2020 (amended 2025), which prohibits unauthorised hunting in protected zones, has also been invoked. The complainant stated that he can identify the attackers.

Bomb explosion kills 7 in Pakistan's northwest

The vast majority of deadly attacks in Pakistan last year took place near the western border with Afghanistan. (EPA Images pic) PESHAWAR : At least seven people were killed and 21 others were wounded today when a bomb exploded at the guest house of a pro-government tribal elder in Pakistan's turbulent northwest, police said. The explosion took place in the town of Wana, the capital of South Waziristan district in the rugged Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that shares a border with Afghanistan, as locals gathered for a jirga, or a council of elders. 'A local tribal elder Saifur Rahman was holding a jirga at his guest house when a bomb exploded, killing at least seven people while injuring 21 others,' Usman Khan, a local police official, told AFP. 'The nature of the blast is not clear yet,' he added. A senior administration official also confirmed the incident and the death toll to AFP, adding that Rahman was taken to the hospital. South Waziristan is one of seven remote districts bordering Afghanistan that remained a rebel stronghold for years, where the military has conducted several operations. Islamabad has encouraged tribal vigilante forces, known locally as peace committees, for years to defend their villages against rebels, including Pakistan's Taliban. Most have been disbanded following a dramatic improvement in security across the country after several military operations, the last of which was launched in 2014. Pakistan is grappling with a broad uptick in insurgency since the Afghan Taliban's return to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad claims rebels are now taking shelter in Afghanistan as they prepare attacks. Last year was the deadliest in nearly a decade in Pakistan, according to the Centre for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad, with the vast majority of the attacks near the western border with Afghanistan.
