Apna Dal (S) begins 2027 poll push with workers' meet
With an eye on the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Apna Dal (S) held a state-level workers' convention and monthly meeting at Gandhi Bhawan in Lucknow on Tuesday, aiming to energise its cadre and reinforce its political messaging. The gathering, led by Union Minister and party National President Anupriya Patel, served as a platform to shift from routine engagement to targeted mobilisation. Describing the convention as a symbol of 'organisational strength, ideological commitment, and collective resolve,' Anupriya Patel urged party workers to operate in 'mission mode.' Patel stressed the need for discipline, grassroots outreach, and strengthening organisational structure. 'Every karyakarta must take it upon themselves to strengthen the party structure, expand public contact, and amplify the voice of the marginalised,' she said. She also underscored the importance of internal unity and issued clear instructions to the newly appointed state president, RP Gautam, including the elimination of factionalism, the revival of weak district units, and the institution of monthly reviews. Reinforcing the party's legacy and ideological foundations, Anupriya Patel announced that Dr Sonelal Patel's birth anniversary will be commemorated as 'Swabhiman Diwas' on July 2 in Lucknow. The occasion will be used to mobilise the party's support base and celebrate its roots in social justice movements. National working president and UP cabinet minister Ashish Patel urged party workers to maintain focus amid changing political dynamics. 'Stay away from conspiracies. Stay focused on building the party,' he said, while affirming the party's continued commitment to Ambedkarite values and the rights of backward and Dalit communities.

Mau MLA Abbas Ansari disqualified from UP Assembly after conviction in hate speech case
Abbas Ansari, an MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Mau constituency and son of the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly after a court convicted him in a hate speech case, the Hindustan Times reported on Monday. On Saturday, Chief Judicial Magistrate KP Singh sentenced Abbas Ansari, a member of the Om Prakash Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, to two years in prison. The court held that while the Constitution granted the right to freedom of expression, it was not unrestricted. 'No one can say anything, anywhere, anytime,' Live Law quoted Singh as having said. 'There is no place for hate or provocative speech in the political field, and it becomes serious when the intention is to create disorder on the basis of religion and thus, influencing elections directly or indirectly.' The case pertained to a statement Abbas Ansari made during an election rally in Mau in March 2022, in which he told government officials that he would 'settle scores and teach them a lesson' after the elections, PTI reported. The Election Commission had imposed a 24-hour campaign ban on him after the remark, Maktoob Media reported. A first information report was filed against Abbas Ansari under the Indian Penal Code sections related to punishment for criminal intimidation, punishment for undue influence or personation at an election, obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, threat of injury to public servant, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony, and punishment of criminal conspiracy. Apart from Abbas Ansari, the FIR also named more than 150 others, including his brother Umar Ansari and his election agent Mansoor Ahmed Ansari, according to Maktoob Media. The court on Saturday stated that Abbas Ansari had been found guilty of delivering a provocative speech, which was a serious offence. 'If senior officials appointed in the district, who are under the direct control of the Election Commission during the Model Code of Conduct period, are threatened with paybacks, then it certainly creates an indirect sense of fear among the voters as well,' Live Law quoted the bench as having said. A day later, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly issued a notification stating that Abbas Ansari had been disqualified, the Hindustan Times reported. Pradeep Dubey, the principal secretary of the Assembly, also said that the Mau seat had been declared vacant. Dubey added that the Election Commission had been informed about the vacancy and that it would issue a notification for holding an election. Abbas Ansari's father, Mukhtar Ansari, had a total of 65 cases against him and had been in jail since 2005 after he surrendered to the police in connection with a communal riot that took place in the town of Mau. On March 14 last year, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court for MPs and MLAs in the 34-year-old Ghazipur fake arms licence case. This was his seventh conviction over 18 months. The gangster-turned-politician died in custody at the Banda Medical College in Uttar Pradesh on March 28, 2024. Hospital authorities said he died of a cardiac arrest. A week before his death, Mukhtar Ansari had told a court in the Barabanki district that his health had deteriorated after he was served food allegedly laced with poison inside the prison, reported PTI. He had alleged that he was poisoned 40 days earlier as well.

Abbas Ansari disqualified from UP Assembly after conviction in hate speech case
A day after being sentenced to two years in prison for a hate speech, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA, Abbas Ansari, son of dead mafia don Mukhtar Ansari, was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, an official said on Sunday. Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana declared Abbas Ansari's Mau Sadar constituency vacant and sent an intimation to the Election Commission of India to consider conducting a by-election. On Saturday, a Mau court convicted Abbas Ansari in a hate speech case and sentenced him to two years in prison for offences including criminal intimidation, promoting enmity and undue influence in the election. He was granted temporary bail soon after the sentence. The verdict was pronounced by Chief Judicial Magistrate K.P. Singh in the MP-MLA court at the District and Sessions Court, Mau, where Abbas Ansari was produced under tight security. The case pertained to a speech delivered by Abbas during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He had allegedly made provocative remarks at a public meeting, warning government officials that he would "settle scores and teach them a lesson" once his party came to power. "I have told the Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, that after the formation of the government, there will be no transfers or postings for six months. Everyone will remain where they are. First, there will be 'Hisab-Kitab', only then will transfers take place," he had said. The statement was deemed threatening and inflammatory, prompting the Election Commission to impose a ban on his campaigning at the time. His speech went viral on social media. Following this, a case was registered against him at Kotwali Nagar police station in 2022. During the trial, six witnesses deposed before the court. Speaking to reporters, Abbas Ansari's counsel, Daroga Singh, said, "The Chief Judicial Magistrate has sentenced him to two years in the hate speech case. We will challenge this order in the Sessions Court. The impact on his MLA status will depend on the outcome of that appeal. Preparations are underway to move to the higher court." The conviction adds to the legal troubles faced by the Ansari family, which has long been under scrutiny for its criminal-political nexus in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

2022 hate speech case: UP MLA Abbas Ansari gets 2 years in jail
A court on Saturday sentenced Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari to two years in jail in a three-year-old case related to a controversial speech in which he allegedly threatened government officials. Abbas now faces possible disqualification from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Abbas, the MLA from Mau Sadar who was elected on a Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) ticket, made the remarks at a public meeting during the 2022 Assembly election period. He is the son of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who died last year at the Banda jail, where he was serving his sentence. 'In the same case, the court has also sentenced Mansoor Ahmed Ansari, a local resident and organiser of the public meeting. While Abbas has been given two years' imprisonment, Mansoor has been sentenced to six months in jail. A fine has also been imposed on both,' said Mau prosecuting officer Harendra Singh. Singh added that Abbas's younger brother, Umar Ansari, is also an accused in the case, but his file was separated from the others. The trial against Umar is pending. Six prosecution witnesses were examined by the court. Defence counsel Daroga Singh said a bail application was moved after the conviction, and the court granted bail to both Abbas and Mansoor. He added that they would file an appeal against the judgment. On Saturday, Abbas and Mansoor, who are out on bail, appeared before the court in which the case is pending. They were convicted under IPC section 171-F (undue influence or personation at an election), 189 (threat of injury to public servant), 153-A (promoting enmity between groups on the ground of religion, race, residence and others ), 505 (statements conducing public mischief), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), said prosecuting officer Singh. The case was registered by a police personnel, claiming that on March 3, 2022 he along with constables had gone to the Paharpur area and saw SBSP leader Abbas Ansari and his brother Umar Ansari had gathered a crowd of around 150 people. The complainant added that while addressing the public from the stage, the accused threatened to 'teach a lesson' to the administrative officials of Mau after the election, which is a violation of the model code of conduct. In 2022, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested Abbas Ansari in connection with a money laundering case. Abbas was released from jail in March this year after being granted bail by the Supreme Court.
