All arrangements in place for Pooram, says Minister Vasavan

As the countdown to the Thrissur Pooram begins, Minister for Devaswom V.N. Vasavan announced that all preparations have been completed by the government, district administration, Thrissur Corporation, and Devaswoms to ensure a smooth conduct of the festival. The Minister was addressing the media following a review meeting held at Ramanilayam, attended by Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Higher Education and Social Justice Minister R. Bindu, Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi, Mayor M.K. Varghese, district panchayat president V.S. Prince, District Collector Arjun Pandiyan, City Police Commissioner R. Ilango, ADM Murali T., and Sub-Collector Akhil V. Menon. A force of around 4,000 police personnel, including women officers, will be deployed for maintaining law and order. The Excise and Police departments are conducting joint operations to prevent the sale and use of narcotics during the festival days. NH underpass works The KSRTC has been directed to arrange additional transportation, and discussions are under way with private bus operators. The Railways have been requested to ensure scheduled stops for all trains passing through Thrissur on May 6. Work on the Angamaly-Thrissur NH underpass will be paused on the Pooram day, following talks with the NHAI, the Minister said. Safety checks have been completed on all Corporation buildings, and dangerous overhanging tree branches have been removed. In collaboration with the Suchitwa Mission, post-Pooram sanitation plans are in place. City roads under the Corporation have been repaired, and arrangements made to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply. The Food Safety department and Legal Metrology have jointly formed squads to conduct field inspections. A dedicated elephant care team, along with veterinary doctors, is ready to manage the health and safety of elephants participating in the festivities. The Minister also emphasised that no communal, political, or provocative symbols, slogans, or flags should be used as part of the festival. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, including female officers, will be deployed. The DMO-led medical team, with ambulances, is also fully prepared. Only ambulances marked with an official DMO sticker will be allowed entry into the Pooram grounds. Crowd control Minister K. Considering the ongoing heatwave, shaded structures and emergency medical setups, including ambulances, will be made available. To enhance the experience for tourists, viewing galleries have been arranged this year as well. On May 6, visitors who register by 12 noon at the DTPC office with valid ID (such as passport) will be given special access to view the Kudamattam ceremony.

Kerala aims to create 1 lakh jobs by 2026 through start-ups: Chief Minister

Holding that Kerala is now nationally and internationally recognised as a haven for start-ups, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Tuesday that the State was aiming to increase the number of start-ups in the State to 15,000 by 2026 to generate over one lakh new jobs. He was speaking at an interaction programme with select personalities from various fields in the district, held as part of the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. The Chief Minister noted that the number of start-ups in the State has grown from 640 in 2016 to 6,300 at present, with total investments reaching ₹5,800 crore. The IT sector too has seen substantial growth. The number of IT companies in Kerala has increased from 640 in 2016 to 1,106 today. Employment in the sector has nearly doubled from 78,068 jobs in 2016 to 1,48,000 currently. IT exports too have grown from ₹34,123 crore to ₹90,000 crore. Knowledge hub Highlighting Kerala's emergence as a hub for knowledge and innovation, the Chief Minister pointed out that three of the top 12 universities in India, as ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), are located in the State. Industrial growth in the State has also seen a marked improvement, rising from 12% in 2016 to 17% now. This, the Chief Minister said, was achieved through a series of legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at making Kerala more business-friendly. Under the LIFE Mission housing project, 4.5 lakh homes have already been completed, with another 50,000 nearing completion. He also announced plans to declare Kerala an 'extreme poverty-free' State by November 1, noting that the State has managed to reduce extreme poverty by 78%. Criticises Centre The Chief Minister criticised the Central government for withholding the State's rightful share of funds, even during times of crisis. Despite this, Kerala has shown resilience, he said, with the State's own revenue growing from 26% in 2016 to 70% today, with a growth of ₹47,000 crore in just three years. The interaction session featured guests from diverse fields, including professionals and community leaders. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan presided over the session. Agriculture Minister P. Prasad was also present.
