City Diagnostic Centre at Ruia Hospital nearing its completion

Tirupati: The much-awaited City Diagnostic Centre at Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati is set to be inaugurated soon. On Friday, Tirupati District Collector Dr S Venkateswar conducted a review meeting with officials from Ruia Hospital and the District Medical and Health Department to oversee the arrangements and amenities required for the new facility. During the review, the Collector examined the infrastructure and enquired about the necessary medical equipment and related expenses. He directed the concerned medical officials to prepare and submit proposals for the procurement of additional equipment required for the diagnostic centre. The Collector also instructed District Medical and Health Officer Dr V Balakrishna Naik to make arrangements for deputing lab technicians to the diagnostic centre to ensure uninterrupted functioning. He emphasised the need for proper manpower and technical support to deliver quality services. Set up at a cost of about Rs 10 crore, the diagnostic centre will have the state-of-the-art amenities with all advanced testing facilities. Currently the centre is equipped to conduct 60 types of tests, including blood, urine, and other essential diagnostic procedures. Plans are underway to increase the capacity to 134 tests. However, officials noted that equipment kits for an additional 15 tests are still needed. Efforts are being made to enable the diagnostic centre to cater to patients referred from nearly 20 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) around Tirupati. This expansion aims to strengthen the healthcare delivery system for people in the surrounding rural and urban areas. The review meeting was attended by Ruia Hospital Superintendent Dr Radha, SV Medical College Principal Dr G Ravi Prabhu, and other key medical officials.

Tirupati had 59 dengue cases since January: DM&HO

Tirupati: On National Dengue Day, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr V Balakrishna Naik flagged off a dengue awareness rally from SV Medical College to SVIMS Circle. Following the rally, participants took a pledge to raise awareness and take preventive steps against the spread of dengue. Speaking at the event, Dr Naik revealed that 59 dengue cases have been reported in the district since January this year. He said that the Ministry of Health began observing National Dengue Day since 2010, aiming to educate the public before the monsoon season, when dengue cases typically rise. 'The main objective is to raise awareness before the outbreak season starts. As most cases are reported between June and September, May was chosen for this initiative,' he said. The DM&HO explained that dengue is a viral infection spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Symptoms include high fever, joint pain, headache, and rashes, with severe cases leading to internal bleeding or even death. He warned about Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, a serious complication that poses higher risks to children, the elderly, and those with weak immunity. He urged the public to eliminate stagnant clean water in coolers, flower pots, buckets, and water tanks where mosquitoes breed. The rally saw participation from several health officials including Dr Srinivasulu Reddy (DLATO), Dr GK Roop Kumar (Malaria Officer), Dr Murali Krishna (Dy DM&HO), ANMs, ASHA workers, and other staff.

Malaria cases see decline in Tirupati district: DM&HO

Tirupati: District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr V Balakrishna Naik said that malaria cases in the district are steadily declining year by year – a development that is both encouraging and significant. He was speaking after inaugurating an awareness rally at the DM&HO office on World Malaria Day on Friday. Dr Naik stated that no malaria cases have been reported in the district from January 2025 to date. Efforts are being intensified with the goal of eliminating malaria completely by 2027. Targets include keeping the number of cases below one per 1,000 people and improving surveillance metrics like ABER (Annual Blood Examination Rate) and MBER (Monthly Blood Examination Rate). Special programmes like the Vector Control and Hygiene App have been introduced to raise awareness digitally. 'We are implementing 'Friday Dry Day' at the village and ward level to eliminate mosquito breeding sources,' Dr Naik added. Review meetings are being conducted regularly by the District Collector and health officials to monitor progress. As part of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), the Telangana State Government, with NHM support, is actively running campaigns against malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and filariasis. Malaria diagnosis and treatment services are readily available, and integrated vector control measures like indoor residual spraying (IRS) and use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are ongoing with interdepartmental coordination. Dr GK Roop Kumar, District Malaria Officer, explained public awareness is being raised on preventive actions such as avoiding stagnant water, using mosquito repellents and nets, and early diagnosis using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).
