Kural chaos: Guv's mementos contained couplet that isn't
Chennai: Raj Bhavan has been dragged into controversy, this time related to Thirukkural. Mementos given by Governor R N Ravi at an event organised at Raj Bhavan on Sunday for a doctors' day function had a couplet inscribed on them that was not a Thirukkural. The governor praised doctors for their service and distributed mementos to them, with a couplet inscribed as 'Kural 944'.Thirukkural 944, which is 'Atradhu Arindhu Kataippitiththu Maaralla Thuykka Thuvarap Pasiththu', deals with medicine. But words from Kural 123, which is 'Serivarindhu Seermai Payakkum Arivarindhu Aatrin Adangap Perin', were taken and presented as 'Serukkarundhu Seermai Payakkum Maruppodu Mannunchol Melvaya Pattu'. Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram said in a post on X, "Similar to adorning a saffron robe, printing a fake Thirukkural is an insult to Thiruvalluvar which cannot be forgiven. Fake attire and now fake Thirukkural. Where will it lead to?" This was in reference to Ravi adorning Thiruvalluvar with saffron robe, evoking ire of some political parties . Coimbatore-based VGM Hospital chairman Dr V G Mohan Prasad defended Raj Bhavan. "We are responsible for the mistake. Neither governor nor the Raj Bhavan had any knowledge of the error," he said. "We have written a letter of apology to the governor," Mohan said, as steps were taken to redistribute the mementos with the correct Thirukkural.
