‘We have ample force': Putin rules out nuclear option in Ukraine conflict
Even without resorting to nuclear weapons, Russia has sufficient forces to accomplish its objectives in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the Kremlin correspondent of state media VGTRK. 'Several attempts were made to force us to make this mistake (the use of nuclear weapons) but we have ample force to achieve objectives without this option,' Putin stated, according to PTI. He reiterated that the aims of Russia's 'special military operation' remain unchanged: 'The objectives are about the elimination of the original causes of this crisis, the formation of conditions for the long-lasting and sustainable peace and the provision of security to Russia.' At the launch of the campaign in February 2022, Putin had described Russia's goals as the 'denazification and demilitarisation of the former Soviet republic and its neutral status.' In the interview with VGTRK journalist Pavel Zarubin, Putin pointed to the need for long-lasting peace and protection of the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine as a core outcome of the campaign. Putin has consistently pushed for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, insisting that Russia's security concerns must be addressed to ensure enduring peace. 'According to him, this is the only way to establish long-term peace, which is what Moscow wants,' PTI reported. The interview is scheduled to air on Sunday night, just ahead of a phone call between Putin and US President Donald Trump on Monday. The conversation follows the unsuccessful May 16 talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, which failed to produce a ceasefire agreement. 'Americans, the entire population of America and the US leadership, including the president, have their own national interests, and we respect that. We hope that we will be treated in the same way,' Putin said, expressing readiness to consider US interests. Three rounds of talks between Putin and US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly brought some convergence on the status of Crimea and Russian-occupied territories, and Ukraine's NATO neutrality. However, key sticking points remain over Ukraine's demilitarisation and the possible deployment of foreign troops as a 'reassurance force.' Delegations from Ukraine and Russia met in Turkey on Thursday for the first direct talks related to ending the war Russia started in February 2022 when it launched a full-scale invasion of its sovereign neighbour. However, Trump, who cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Istanbul meeting, declaring that 'nothing could happen' until he personally meets Putin, announced Saturday that he will speak with Putin over the phone on Monday at 10 am ET. The president said he planned to speak with Zelenskyy and 'various' NATO allies after his call with Putin.

CGTN: Deepening cultural exchanges inject new impetus into China-Russia friendship
BEIJING, May 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- CGTN published an article on a China-Russia people-to-people and cultural exchange event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War, highlighting how cultural exchanges inject new impetus into China-Russia friendship. In September 1938, Soviet cameraman Roman Lazarevich Karmen was dispatched to China by the Soviet government to document the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Karmen captured the courageous and determined efforts of Chinese soldiers and civilians, as well as the support provided by the Soviet volunteer air force during the war. Eighty-seven years later, Karmen's grandson took part in a cultural exchange event held on Wednesday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in both the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War. During the event, he shared stories of his family's deep-rooted connection with China. Hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK), the event also featured the producer and main creative team behind the China-Russia co-produced film "Red Silk," which premiered in Russia on February 20 and is scheduled for release in Chinese theaters this September. The 2025 China Film Festival in Russia was officially launched during the event. Additionally, CMG and VGTRK announced a peace-themed initiative aimed at collecting historical relics, documentary images, and other memorabilia from citizens of both countries to jointly portray a vision of peace and shared future. On the same day, filming began on the China-Russia co-produced documentary, "The Great Victory – China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression Through the Lens of a Soviet Photographer," which explores the experiences of Soviet photojournalist Roman Kalman in China and the powerful images he captured during the war. Shen Haixiong, vice minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and president of CMG, and Oleg Dobrodeev, CEO of the VGTRK, highlighted the fruitful achievements of past cooperation between the two media organizations. They expressed a shared commitment to further strengthening collaboration in content exchange, technological innovation, and personnel development, thereby deepening public support for the China-Russia friendship and contributing to cultural understanding between the two nations. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the event, noting that 80 years ago, the peoples of China and Russia jointly made indelible historical contributions to the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and forged an unbreakable, great friendship with blood, laying a solid foundation for the high-level development of bilateral relations. He emphasized that strengthening people-to-people and cultural exchanges is of great and far-reaching significance for enhancing mutual understanding, promoting good-neighborliness and friendship, and consolidating the social and popular support for the development of bilateral ties. On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent a congratulatory message to the event. As agreed by President Xi and President Putin in 2023, the years 2024 and 2025 have been designated the China-Russia Years of Culture. Since the beginning of 2024, both countries have actively engaged in a vibrant series of cultural initiatives as part of this shared celebration.

Inside Vladimir Putin's luxe apartment at the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered a glimpse inside his luxurious living quarters for the first time in an interview recorded for state media. Taking some time away from overseeing his ongoing war with Ukraine, Mr Putin has recently shown a reporter and TV camera inside his private residence. In footage shared to Telegram by VGTRK host Pavel Zarubin, the Russian dictator is seen smiling as he invites the news crew into the immaculate suite. 'This is, in fact, an apartment?' the reporter asks outside the door. 'Yes this is an apartment. As you can see it's not far,' Mr Putin, his comments translated into English, says. The footage shared to Telegram, understood to be a snippet of a longer broadcast to be released this month, featured a clip from a 2023 propaganda program with Mr Putin. In that he spoke about negotiating with Chinese counterpart and 'friend' Xi Jinping inside the private wing. 'I have an apartment here (at the Kremlin), where I have been spending a lot of time lately, I work here and spend the night very often, so we moved there and, sitting by the fireplace and drinking tea, talked about everything slowly,' he said at the time. During his sit-down with Mr Putin, said to have been recorded this year, Zarubin asked 'if it is possible to see, for our program, this apartment where you went through these changes, please'. The men were then seen outside the white and gold doors before the Russian leader opened them up and walked inside. There was only a few seconds' worth of insight into the room but it featured plush couches, a rug, lavish curtains and a white piano in one corner. A portrait of Russian Emperor Alexander III sat on a marble benchtop framed by a large mirror along the left-hand wall. Another clip appears to show Mr Putin and the news crew spoke in the room for a period before moving to a gilt private church in a room off the apartment. The digs pale in comparison to the billion-dollar mansion Mr Putin owns on the Black Sea near the resort town of Gelendzhik. Dubbed 'Putin's Palace', it sits on about 50 acres and floorplans suggest it contained a wine cave, theatre, gym, pool, and hockey rink. The palace's existence was brought to widespread publicity in a documentary released by former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in 2021. Mr Navalny, who was committed to exposing corruption in the Kremlin, had survived an assassination attempt in 2020 and fled the country. After returning to Russia in 2021 he was soon arrested and jailed for embezzlement and contempt of court – after what was labelled a sham trial. He died in an Arctic Circle prison last year, with the official cause of death recorded as 'combined disease' by Russian authorities.
